First identify which direction the stream is going. If VLC is playing a YouTube video or live stream, YouTube encoder bitrate settings do not control the bitrate VLC receives; check playback, connection stability, and VLC’s buffering instead. If you are broadcasting to YouTube from an encoder, check upload stability and follow YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
Are you watching in VLC or broadcasting to YouTube?
These are different problems. A VLC viewer receives a rendition delivered by YouTube. A broadcaster sends an encoded feed to YouTube, where YouTube processes it for viewers. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers across devices and networks (YouTube’s live encoder settings guide).
- Watching: You have a YouTube video or live stream open in VLC, and its quality, bitrate display, or playback is changing. Start with playback comparisons and network stability; encoder output settings are not a fix for the rendition VLC receives.
- Broadcasting: You are sending your own live video to YouTube through an encoder. Check the encoder’s output settings and upload connection, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
For instructions tied to a specific VLC menu, the VLC version and operating system matter. VLC’s network-cache labels and controls can vary by version; the available evidence does not establish one universal menu path or a version-specific fix for direct YouTube links.
If VLC is playing the YouTube stream
Compare playback in a browser
- Open the same stream in a browser on the same device and network.
- Check whether the browser has the same quality drop or interruptions as VLC.
- If both have trouble, investigate connection stability and congestion before changing encoder settings.
- If the browser plays smoothly but VLC does not, focus on VLC playback or how the YouTube source link is handled. This comparison narrows the problem; it does not identify a specific VLC fix.
YouTube’s general computer troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD playback (YouTube video playback troubleshooting). Treat that as a broad recommendation, not a diagnosis of your connection or a guarantee that a particular quality will be available. A connection can also vary over time, and congestion can contribute to live-stream problems or delays (YouTube’s live-streaming guidance).

Test the connection, not just its advertised speed
- Repeat playback on a stable connection; if practical, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection.
- Check whether other activity on the network coincides with the drops.
- Use the browser comparison and connection test together. A single speed result cannot show whether the cause is Wi-Fi, congestion, YouTube’s delivered rendition, or VLC.
Adjust VLC’s network cache only for stuttering
If playback pauses or stutters, VLC’s network cache is a buffering setting worth testing. Increasing it can let VLC absorb short delivery variations, but it does not increase bandwidth or force YouTube to send a higher bitrate. A larger cache can also make playback start or resume after seeking more slowly.
Exact menu labels are version-dependent. Locate the network caching control in your VLC version’s preferences, increase it modestly, and retest the same stream. A third-party guide suggests trying 3000–5000 ms for live streams; that is a cautious trial range, not an official VideoLAN setting or universal recommendation (VLC network-stream caching guide). If the change adds delay without reducing stutter, return to the prior value.

If you are sending a live stream to YouTube
For a broadcaster, encoder bitrate is an output setting. Follow YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than using VLC viewer troubleshooting. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), testing before the event, and monitoring stream health while live (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Check upload stability and the actual video format
- Confirm the encoder is configured for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send.
- Run an upload speed test. YouTube’s guide says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Use the recommended bitrate range for that exact format and leave room for connection variation rather than treating a single speed-test result as a guarantee.
- Test with representative motion and content before the event, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast.
For H.264, YouTube’s published examples include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder/ingest recommendations for broadcasters, not target bitrates for VLC viewers. Check the current YouTube table for the complete ranges and other formats.
