Both Firefox and Chrome can capture a page beyond the visible viewport. Firefox’s regular screenshot tool offers more documented capture choices—including a selected region, a highlighted page part, and clipboard copying—while Chrome’s documented full-page route is a command in DevTools’ Device mode. Choose based on the kind of capture you need, then inspect the result: neither browser’s official documentation sets a universal size limit or guarantees every page will render as expected.
Quick comparison
| Need | Firefox | Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Capture beyond the viewport | Use “Save full page” in the regular screenshot tool, or a Firefox DevTools route. | Use “Capture a full size screenshot” in DevTools Device mode. |
| Capture only what is visible | Choose “Save visible” in the regular screenshot tool. | Choose “Capture screenshot” in Device mode. |
| Select a custom region | Documented in the regular screenshot tool. | Not established by the Chrome documentation cited here. |
| Select a page part by pointing at it | The regular tool highlights page parts as the pointer moves. | Not established by the Chrome documentation cited here. |
| Copy the result to the clipboard | Documented in the regular screenshot tool, alongside image download. | Not established by the Chrome documentation cited here. |
| Capture one element | Firefox DevTools documents “Screenshot Node.” | Not established by the Chrome documentation cited here. |
“Not established” means the cited Chrome source does not verify that workflow; it does not prove Chrome cannot do it by another method. Sources: Mozilla Support, Firefox Source Docs, and Chrome for Developers.
How to take a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Use Firefox’s regular screenshot tool
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Open the page context menu and choose the screenshot option, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. You can also add a screenshot button to the toolbar.
- Choose “Save full page” to capture beyond the current viewport. For a different result, select a custom region, point to a page part highlighted by the tool, or choose “Save visible” for the current view.
- After capture, download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
These choices make Firefox’s regular tool useful when the task is not simply to capture the entire page—for example, when you need a particular on-page region or want to paste the screenshot directly into another application. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions.
Use Firefox DevTools for a full page or one element
Firefox DevTools provides another, separate route. Its full-page screenshot toolbar button is disabled by default: open DevTools Settings, enable the button under “Available Toolbox Buttons,” and then use it. The capture is saved to the browser’s Downloads directory. Firefox’s DevTools documentation also describes a Web Console screenshot command with a full-page option. For a single element, it documents “Screenshot Node.” Consult Firefox’s DevTools screenshot guide for the command details.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Switch to Device mode.
- Open the DevTools More options menu and select “Capture a full size screenshot.” This includes content outside the current viewport.
For just the visible viewport, use “Capture screenshot” instead. Chrome’s Device mode documentation distinguishes the viewport command from the full-size one.
Which workflow should you use?
- Choose Firefox’s regular tool when you need region selection, a highlighted page part, or the documented clipboard option, as well as when you want a full-page image.
- Choose Chrome’s documented route when you are working in Chrome DevTools and need a full-size capture, or only the current viewport.
- Choose Firefox DevTools when you need its documented element-capture option or prefer a DevTools workflow.
- Check the output on the page that matters. The available documentation does not establish that either browser captures every page correctly.
Limits and what to check
The official browser documentation does not specify a universal maximum image dimension for full-page screenshots. It also does not promise that every page will be captured correctly. Very long pages, dynamically loaded content, sticky elements, embedded content, and other page-specific behavior are reasonable things to check in the resulting image, but the cited documentation does not quantify their effects.
A Mozilla Support moderator gave a historical explanation in a troubleshooting discussion dated June 25, 2019: very large full-page screenshots could exceed a canvas data-volume limitation. That forum response is not a current, quantified browser specification, so it does not establish a precise cutoff or mean all long pages will fail. See the 2019 Firefox screenshot discussion.
