For a simple 24/7 loop of prerecorded video, FFmpeg is usually the more practical starting point if you can configure and supervise a command-line process. Choose OBS when you need scenes, overlays, camera sources, or easy manual switching—and your PC has enough GPU capacity to render them. Neither program by itself keeps a stream alive through every crash, power cut, or internet outage. The right choice depends on your media, PC, upload connection, and recovery plan, not a universal CPU ranking.

How to choose between FFmpeg and OBS

What matters FFmpeg OBS
Best fit File-based playback, a simple loop or playlist, and automation controlled from the command line. Scene-based production, overlays, camera capture, and frequent manual changes through a graphical interface.
How you control it Commands and scripts; argument order and process supervision require care. Graphical sources, scenes, and settings.
Compute considerations Compatible media can be stream-copied without decoding and re-encoding. Filters and transcoding require processing. Uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Complex scenes and sources can increase load.
Does the program guarantee 24/7 recovery? No. A separate recovery and monitoring plan is needed. No. A separate recovery and monitoring plan is needed.

FFmpeg’s documentation describes it as a universal media converter and explains that stream copy avoids a decode-and-encode pass, but does not allow filtering. That makes it a good candidate when your prerecorded files are already suitable for YouTube’s ingest settings and need no resizing, overlays, or other processing (FFmpeg documentation).

OBS needs GPU time to compose and render a scene. Its performance guidance recommends lowering output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes and sources if rendering is overloaded. Browser sources and filters can also add resource demands (OBS encoding performance troubleshooting, dated 2021-06-12). This is not proof that FFmpeg always uses less CPU or that OBS will fail on a low-cost PC: results depend on your hardware, source codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and encoder settings.

What to check before committing to either encoder

Match your content to the workflow

  • For a prerecorded video or straightforward playlist, start with FFmpeg if you are comfortable setting up a command and a way to detect and restart a failed process.
  • For camera input, overlays, multiple visual sources, or hands-on scene changes, OBS is usually the easier fit. Keep the scene and source list as lean as possible on a constrained PC.
  • If the PC is borderline, test both with the actual video, audio, resolution, and runtime you intend to use. No specific budget PC or workload is established here, so a guaranteed resolution or performance level would be misleading.

Check upload capacity, not just download speed

YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Other people and devices using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, and a disruption can break the stream. Run a speed test, then choose a bitrate that your real upstream connection can sustain with headroom; a brief peak result is not a guarantee of continuous performance (YouTube streaming tips).

Plan for uninterrupted operation

An encoder cannot prevent a local power loss, a router or ISP outage, or every process failure. Decide how you will notice a failed stream, who will respond, and how the encoder will be restarted. YouTube advises testing the stream, monitoring stream health and audio/video quality, and checking failover arrangements. For a 24/7 channel, turn those steps into a documented recovery plan and periodic checks (YouTube live streaming tips). An optional UPS for the PC or router can help with local power continuity, but cannot fix an ISP outage; no model, runtime, or cost is established here.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings correctly

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its current English guidance lists these H.264 examples: 720p30 at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended, and 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. The same guidance includes other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations, so use the current table in YouTube Studio for your exact output rather than extrapolating from these examples (YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; accessed 2026; publication date not stated).

Configure FFmpeg for a prerecorded stream

FFmpeg can read media files, select and copy streams, filter or transcode them, and send output to a network stream. The exact command depends on your operating system, FFmpeg build, input file, YouTube stream destination, and whether the source needs conversion. A universal command would risk being wrong for your setup. Use this sequence to build and verify your own command:

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
  1. Confirm the source format. Check the video’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, and duration. If the source is already compatible with your intended YouTube output, stream copy may avoid decode and re-encode. If you need to resize, add an overlay, change codecs, or mix audio, stream copy alone cannot do that; use the required filtering or encoding and test the load.
  2. Set the output for YouTube. Select an ingest protocol and the appropriate video and audio codecs, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval according to YouTube Studio’s current instructions. Keep the total bitrate within the connection’s sustainable upload capacity with headroom.
  3. Supply the stream destination and key securely. Get the current server and stream-key details from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a command pasted into a public forum or expose it in a shared script. YouTube explains its role in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Build and test the loop. Configure playback for the intended file or playlist, then test that video and audio continue correctly across a loop boundary. Check that the output remains connected and that YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream.
  5. Add supervision outside FFmpeg. Decide how your operating system or process supervisor will detect a stopped process, restart it, and alert you. A restart policy does not restore power or internet service; define how you will recover from those failures too.

Configure OBS for a continuous stream

  1. Create a minimal scene. Add only the sources your production needs—for a prerecorded loop, that may be a media source rather than a collection of browser overlays and effects. Avoid unnecessary filters and browser sources on a resource-constrained machine.
  2. Set a modest output first. Choose the resolution and frame rate the PC can render reliably, then set the codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube Studio’s current guidance and the capacity of your upstream connection. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, or simplify the scene, if OBS reports rendering trouble.
  3. Enter YouTube’s stream details privately. In OBS’s stream settings, use the server and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Protect the key as a credential; do not share screenshots or configuration exports that reveal it.
  4. Test the complete programme. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Verify playback, audio, stream health, and the transitions or loop behavior you expect before making the stream public or leaving it unattended.
  5. Prepare recovery and monitoring. Establish how you will spot a stopped or unhealthy stream, restart OBS, and respond to power or network failures. OBS’s own performance guidance can help diagnose overloaded rendering, but does not replace stream-health monitoring or a recovery plan.

Test and troubleshoot before leaving the channel unattended

YouTube recommends setting up in advance, inspecting the Live Control Room preview, testing failover, checking access to the watch page, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube live streaming tips). Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static opening frame. If applicable, verify that the resulting archive is intact. For a 24/7 operation, repeat checks periodically and document who acts when an alert arrives.

Symptom Likely area to check Practical response
YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream Insufficient or variable upload bandwidth, competing network use, or an ingest bitrate too high for the connection. Measure upstream capacity under realistic conditions, reduce bitrate to a sustainable setting, retain headroom, and test again. Check the network tips from YouTube.
OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble Scene composition, GPU load, output resolution or frame rate, filters, or demanding sources. Simplify scenes and sources, remove unnecessary browser sources or filters, or lower output resolution or frame rate. Retest on the actual programme.
FFmpeg output fails or media does not play as expected Command arguments, input compatibility, stream selection, or a need for filtering/transcoding rather than stream copy. Validate the input and output settings, inspect the command and logs, and test a short representative segment before restoring the full loop.
The broadcast stops after a process, power, or internet failure Encoder stopped, local power lost, or connectivity disrupted. Follow the recovery plan: restore power or connectivity as applicable, restart the encoder or supervised process, then confirm incoming stream health in Live Control Room. Do not assume the encoder alone will recover every failure.
The video arrives but audio is missing or wrong Incorrect source audio selection, stream mapping, OBS source configuration, or input-specific behavior. Check the selected audio track or source and listen to the Live Control Room preview. Test the whole loop, including transitions, before unattended use.

Ways to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running

  1. StreamNeo — cloud playback. It keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, so your PC and home connection do not have to stay on; uploaded quality is retained up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
  2. Run FFmpeg or OBS on your own PC. This gives you local control, but you must provide the computer, stable upstream connection, monitoring, and recovery arrangements described above. Indian PC prices, electricity costs, and ISP conditions are not established here, so a local-versus-cloud cost winner cannot be calculated reliably.
  3. Consider another hosted service only after checking its terms. YouTube’s official encoder list names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming without a dedicated PC. Its pricing, India availability, and suitability for a particular channel are not established here; verify them directly before choosing (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera or go live on platforms other than YouTube.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use FFmpeg to stream a loop instead of OBS?

Yes. FFmpeg can read files and send a network stream; its stream-copy mode works when the media is compatible and does not need filtering or transcoding.

Can a short speed test prove a low-cost PC setup will run 24/7?

No. It cannot establish sustained upstream capacity or encoder performance for your actual source and machine. Test the real workload and monitor stream health.
