If you want a local command-line PDF renderer, compare Screenshot Machine with its related project, wkhtmltopdf. If you want a local image, wkhtmltoimage is the relevant tool.

The wkhtmltopdf project describes both command-line tools as headless and based on Qt WebKit, with wkhtmltopdf producing PDFs and wkhtmltoimage producing images. The upstream GitHub repository has been archived and made read-only since 2023-01-02; verify the maintenance status and behavior of the specific package or fork you plan to use. wkhtmltopdf project repository
Use Screenshot Machine from the command line for a PDF
Screenshot Machine’s PDF workflow is a hosted API, not a self-contained local renderer. Its documentation says API calls start with https://pdfapi.screenshotmachine.com/? and use query parameters. The following Bash example uses curl to request a PDF and save it locally:

PDF controls documented by Screenshot Machine
The PDF API documents paper sizes including letter, legal, ledger, tabloid, and A-series values; portrait or landscape orientation; screen or print media; background selection; scale and delay; cookies, language, and user-agent; and selector-based click and hide controls. A click can interact with a cookie banner, while a hide selector can remove page elements. These are request options for the hosted renderer, not settings for a local wkhtmltoimage invocation.
Use wkhtmltoimage when the required output is an image
The Debian unstable manual documents this command form:
wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>For example, a basic URL-to-image call is:
wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.pngThe exact options available depend on the installed build. The manual documents image format and quality, viewport width and height, crop coordinates, JavaScript enablement or disablement and delay, cookies and cookie jars, custom headers, proxy and authentication, local-file access policy, stylesheet injection, and waiting for a window-status condition. Choose based on deployment and control needs
- Choose Screenshot Machine’s PDF API when you want a hosted PDF workflow with documented paper, orientation, media, and selector controls, and accept sending requests to a service with an API key.
- Evaluate wkhtmltopdf when the requirement is local PDF generation and you can install and maintain the relevant binary or package.
- Evaluate wkhtmltoimage when the required artifact is an image and its documented Qt WebKit behavior and package constraints suit your use case.
The project documentation identifies the wkhtml tools as open source under LGPLv3. That does not remove the need to account for installation, packaging, support, and operational work in your own environment. Screenshot Machine lists a free tier and paid plans; its pricing page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists 100 fresh screenshots monthly free, €9/month for Basic with 2,500 fresh screenshots, €59/month for Pro with 20,000, and €99/month for Enterprise with 50,000. The cited documentation describes controls but does not establish a current winner for rendering fidelity, speed, or dynamic-site support. Test representative pages using the precise package build or hosted settings you intend to deploy.

No. Its documented purpose and output are image files; use wkhtmltopdf for the related local PDF workflow.
