Most Selenium 3 tests do not need a wholesale rewrite: the upgrade was intended to be close to a dependency change, but deprecated or internal APIs, driver setup, and newer browser features need review. Selenium 4 is a continuing release line; the latest release covered here is 4.49, announced September 9, 2026.
What changed for test authors—and what did not
Selenium 4.0 was released on October 13, 2021. Its launch message emphasized keeping public APIs stable for people moving from Selenium 3. Simon Stewart, a Selenium committer, described the intended upgrade as changing the dependency from 3.x to 4.0.0; the same announcement cautioned that code depending on internal or deprecated APIs could encounter problems. Treat that as the original migration goal, not a guarantee that every suite upgrades without edits.
The main test-author changes are optional tools and clearer standards alignment, rather than a new mandatory way to write every test. WebDriver remains the API for controlling a browser locally or remotely. Its W3C standardization supports interoperability across implementations; it does not mean every browser exposes every additional capability in the same way.
- Usually unchanged: established WebDriver commands and CSS, XPath, and other existing locator strategies.
- New choices: relative locators, browser-specific capabilities, and a WebSocket-based event channel through WebDriver BiDi.
- Mostly operational: Selenium Manager and the redesigned Grid affect driver setup and where sessions run, not the basic structure of a local test.
Do Selenium 3 tests need to be rewritten?
Usually, begin by upgrading the binding dependency and running the existing suite, rather than replacing working tests pre-emptively. The extent of changes depends on the language binding, the APIs the suite uses, and the browsers and drivers in its CI environment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Upgrade the Selenium language binding and read that binding’s Selenium 4 migration guidance.
- Search for deprecated or internal APIs and replace those before relying on the upgrade being drop-in.
- Run representative tests against the browser and driver versions used in development and CI; investigate setup failures separately from test logic failures.
- Keep existing locators at first. Introduce relative locators only where a spatial relationship makes a locator clearer and remains stable on the page.
- Check browser and binding support before adding authentication, interception, DOM-change, JavaScript-error, or BiDi-dependent behavior.
This staged approach helps distinguish a binding/API migration issue from a browser-driver mismatch or a test whose assumptions changed.
Relative locators: locate by position when it helps
Relative locators identify an element in relation to another element, using spatial relationships such as above, below, to the left, or to the right. They can express a relationship that would otherwise require a complicated selector, but they supplement rather than replace CSS, XPath, and other locator strategies.
Example: find the input next to a known label
In Java, a relative locator can be written like this:
import static org.openqa.selenium.support.locators.RelativeLocator.with;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
WebElement emailInput = driver.findElement(
with(By.tagName("input")).toRightOf(By.id("email-label"))
);
Use a stable anchor element and confirm that the page layout makes the relationship unambiguous. A redesign, responsive layout, or an unexpected nearby element can change which match is found. If a stable ID, accessible name, or concise CSS selector identifies the intended input directly, that may be the simpler choice.

Browser-specific capabilities: verify support before depending on them
The Selenium 4.0 launch announcement highlighted additional capabilities for Firefox and Chromium-derived browsers, including basic and digest authentication, network interception, waiting for a DOM change, and inspecting JavaScript errors. These were described for particular browser families, not as identical features available across every browser.
Before making one of these capabilities part of a test’s requirements, check the current documentation for the target browser and language binding. Keep browser-specific setup isolated where practical, so a capability that is unavailable in another browser does not silently become an assumed cross-browser WebDriver behavior.
Selenium Manager and browser-driver setup
Selenium Manager was introduced to reduce the manual work of matching browser drivers to installed browsers. The Selenium Project’s November 4, 2022 description of Selenium 4.6 said it could configure Chrome, Firefox, and Edge drivers when no driver was found on PATH, and that this behavior was ignored when a driver was already installed. That is the scope of the initial announcement, not a complete statement of current Selenium Manager behavior.
For a present-day setup, verify how the Selenium version you use behaves in the actual environment. In particular, account for whether CI has a browser installed, whether a driver is already on PATH, what network access is allowed, and whether your team needs a pinned, reproducible browser-driver combination. Do not infer current behavior solely from the 2022 introduction.

Grid 4: where tests run
Selenium Grid 4 was rebuilt for several execution topologies. A single standalone process can serve local or small-scale needs; hub-and-node operation and distributed deployments can support remote sessions and larger infrastructure, including Kubernetes. Grid is useful when tests need remote browser capacity or parallel execution, but it is not a prerequisite for running an individual local WebDriver test.
The launch also described Docker container management, a refreshed UI with a GraphQL model, live VNC session previews, and OpenTelemetry support. These are chiefly operational features for teams running and observing remote sessions, rather than changes to ordinary test assertions.
A Selenium Project article from October 13, 2021, also described server command-line help for Grid topics, shell completion, and a --dump-config option to expose active Grid configuration as JSON. Those details are from the launch-era article; check the command syntax for the server version you actually run before using them in scripts or runbooks.
WebDriver BiDi, CDP, and ordinary WebDriver commands
Traditional WebDriver commands primarily send an action and receive a response. WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket connection that can stream browser events and let automation react to them, including network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Selenium’s overview describes BiDi as a W3C-standard bidirectional protocol intended to provide a cross-browser alternative to browser-specific development protocols.

CDP, the Chrome DevTools Protocol, is Chromium-specific; it is not the cross-browser standard. BiDi and CDP are therefore not interchangeable labels. If a test depends on event-driven browser communication, choose the protocol based on the browser and binding support for the particular command you need.
BiDi support is still evolving across Selenium bindings and browsers. Selenium 4.47, announced August 10, 2026, reported work toward a shared binding-neutral BiDi schema and noted that Firefox blocks CDP access in .NET, Python, and Ruby. Selenium 4.49, announced September 9, 2026, reported further binding work, including .NET browsing-context screencast support and Python typed BiDi errors and Grid test execution. These release notes show ongoing implementation work; they do not establish that every BiDi command works in every browser and binding. Verify the exact command against the current documentation and release notes for your combination.
Choose the approach that fits the test
| Decision | Use this when | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Existing CSS/XPath or other locator | It identifies the intended element clearly and robustly. | Complex selectors can be harder to read or maintain. |
| Relative locator | A spatial relationship to a reliable anchor makes intent clearer. | It depends on page layout and can become ambiguous after a redesign. |
| Local or standalone execution | You need a simple local test environment or a single Grid process. | It does not provide the remote capacity of a distributed setup. |
| Hub-and-node or distributed Grid | You need remote sessions, parallel browser execution, or infrastructure-scale deployment. | It adds server and environment operations that local tests do not require. |
| WebDriver commands | You need standard browser actions and request/response control. | Event observation may call for an additional protocol capability. |
| CDP | Your use case specifically targets supported Chromium development-protocol features. | It is Chromium-specific, so portability is limited. |
| WebDriver BiDi | You need event-driven browser communication and the required command is supported. | Support varies by browser, binding, and command as implementation continues. |
| Managed driver setup | You want Selenium Manager to reduce manual setup work. | Check actual behavior against your Selenium version and environment. |
| Pinned, manually managed driver | Your environment requires explicit browser-driver version control. | Your team owns matching and maintaining those versions. |
Troubleshooting common upgrade and runtime problems
A test fails after upgrading the binding
Look for use of deprecated or internal APIs, then consult migration guidance for that binding. Run a small representative test to isolate binding-level problems from application changes.
The browser does not start or the driver is not found
Check which browser is installed, whether a driver is already on PATH, and how the selected Selenium version handles driver setup in that environment. Avoid assuming the initial Selenium Manager announcement describes every current setup case.

A relative locator returns the wrong element
Inspect the rendered layout and the anchor element. Make the relationship more specific or use a direct locator if the page has multiple nearby matches or responsive layouts that change element positions.
A browser-specific capability fails on another browser
Confirm that the feature is supported by that browser and binding. The Selenium 4.0 announcement described some capabilities for Firefox and Chromium-derived browsers, not uniform support for all browsers.
A BiDi command is missing or behaves differently
Check the exact Selenium binding version, browser, and command support. BiDi is active implementation work, and support for one command does not imply full support across other browser and binding combinations.
Remote tests cannot create sessions or Grid configuration is unclear
Separate client-side WebDriver configuration from Grid server configuration. Confirm the intended topology—standalone, hub-and-node, or distributed—and consult command help and configuration output for the server version in use.

If the job is to capture a clean page screenshot rather than run interactive assertions, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Selenium WebDriver tests. Its one-call API can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, with each cleanup step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents.
For API options, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of the target URL:

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
What to remember
Selenium 4 is not a wholesale rewrite of WebDriver testing. Upgrade the binding carefully, keep working locators unless a relative locator improves clarity, validate browser-specific and BiDi support for the exact features you use, and adopt Grid only when remote or distributed execution solves a real need. Selenium 4.49 is the latest release discussed here as of October 2026; the 4.x line continues to evolve.
