Choose based on how the page authenticates. If you can provide a valid session cookie or authorization header, a hosted screenshot API may capture the page in one request. If the workflow must enter credentials, follow redirects, or complete other browser steps first, use browser automation such as Playwright. ScreenshotNeo is the first option to consider for clean captures and transparent billing; its documented product facts do not establish that it can inject login credentials or perform an interactive login, so use it only when its documented capture options fit your authenticated-page workflow.
First identify what “behind a login” means
A screenshot service cannot capture an authenticated page merely because you supply the page URL. The browser making the request needs valid authentication state. That can mean an existing session cookie, a token in an HTTP header, HTTP Basic Authentication, or a login sequence that requires browser interaction. These methods are not interchangeable: accepting a cookie or header is credential injection, not the same thing as performing a login on your behalf.
- Session cookie: Your application or a prior login flow provides a cookie that identifies an authenticated session.
- Authorization header: Your request supplies a bearer token or another authorization value accepted by the site.
- HTTP Basic Authentication: The site challenges the request for a username and password using Basic Auth.
- Interactive login: The browser must visit a sign-in page, fill fields, click controls, handle redirects, or complete other site-specific steps before reaching the target.
Before choosing a tool, determine who will obtain and refresh the credentials, whether the login requires interaction, and whether you can safely send the resulting account state to a hosted service.
Compare the documented options
| Option | Authentication documented | Best fit | Boundary to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Its supplied product facts describe custom headers, cookies, and Authorization support among its capture options; they do not specifically establish that it can authenticate to every protected site or perform an interactive login. | Consider first when its capture controls fit your workflow and you want cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets removed before capture, with billing outcomes identified in response headers. | Do not assume its listed request options can complete a site’s custom login flow, MFA, CAPTCHA, or automation checks. |
| Cloudflare Browser Run | Session cookies, HTTP Basic Authentication, and a custom Authorization header, as documented for its screenshot endpoint. Cloudflare Browser Run documentation | A hosted screenshot request when you already have a valid cookie or credential and want to supply it directly. | The cited endpoint documentation establishes credential injection, not arbitrary multi-step login interaction. |
| ScreenshotOne | Custom authentication headers and session cookies. ScreenshotOne’s guide to pages behind login | Hosted capture when your code can supply valid cookie or header data. | The guide notes that obtaining login cookies may require separate code; the API should not be mistaken for a service that necessarily logs in for you. |
| Capture API | HTTP Basic Authentication and custom user-agent configuration. Capture documentation | A narrower case where the target uses Basic Auth or requires a configured user agent. | The reviewed documentation does not establish general cookie injection or form-based login support. |
| Playwright | Browser-driven login, reusable browser storage state, and screenshots. Playwright authentication documentation and screenshot documentation | A workflow that must interact with a login page or perform other browser steps before capture. | You operate the automation and must protect saved authentication state. The documented storage-state workflow does not automatically persist session storage. |
This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a measured ranking of speed, uptime, reliability, or success across arbitrary sites. No independent benchmark establishes a universal best provider.

Choose the workflow that matches your authentication
Existing cookie or token: use a hosted request if supported
If your own authorized login process already obtains a valid session cookie or token, a hosted endpoint can be simpler than maintaining a browser workflow. Cloudflare Browser Run documents cookies, Basic Auth, and an Authorization header for its screenshot endpoint. ScreenshotOne documents cookies and custom headers. Select between them based on your existing platform, integration needs, and terms; the available evidence does not establish that one performs better overall.
Confirm that credentials are current and that the site accepts them in the form the endpoint sends. A cookie or header that is expired, scoped to a different domain, or missing required companion values may result in a login page rather than the intended content.
Basic Auth: use a documented direct mechanism
For a page protected by HTTP Basic Authentication, Cloudflare Browser Run and Capture document direct Basic Auth support. Check the current product documentation for the exact request syntax and encoding rules before sending credentials. Do not put secrets in a URL that may be logged or shared.

Login form or custom browser steps: automate the browser
When authentication requires filling a form, waiting for redirects, or taking other browser actions, Playwright gives you control over those steps. Its documented workflow can save authenticated browser state for reuse and then take a screenshot. You must write and operate the automation, and handle state refresh when sessions expire.

An HTTP success or image file does not prove that authentication succeeded; it may be a screenshot of the sign-in page. Test with an authorized account and a page whose logged-in state you can recognize. Check the final URL and a page-specific visible element before treating the screenshot as valid.
Automate an interactive login with Playwright
This Node.js example illustrates the browser-automation pattern: visit the sign-in page, fill the form, wait for a known authenticated-page element, save browser state, then capture the protected page. Replace the example URLs, selectors, and environment variable names with the target site’s actual values. Store credentials in environment variables or a secret manager, not in source code.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com/login', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.locator('#email').fill(process.env.SITE_USERNAME);
await page.locator('#password').fill(process.env.SITE_PASSWORD);
await page.locator('button[type="submit"]').click();
// Wait for an element that is only present after a successful login.
await page.locator('[data-testid="account-home"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
// Save this file securely if you need to reuse the authenticated session.
await page.context().storageState({ path: 'auth-state.json' });
await page.goto('https://example.com/account/report', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('[data-testid="report-title"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
For a later run, create a context from the saved state with const context = await browser.newContext({ storageState: 'auth-state.json' }); and open pages from that context. Playwright’s authentication guidance warns that saved state can contain cookies and headers capable of impersonating the account; do not commit the file to a repository. The documented storage-state workflow also requires separate handling if the site relies on session storage.
Or skip the browser setup
For a URL that can be captured with credentials supplied through supported request options, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot endpoint. Review the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and capture parameters. This example uses the documented API shape; adapt the target URL and any supported options for your authorized page.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. It also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. These facts do not establish that ScreenshotNeo can perform a site’s interactive login or bypass access controls, so verify that its documented cookie/header options fit your authorized capture.

Protect credentials and account state
Saved browser state and injected cookies or headers can grant access as the account they represent. Playwright specifically warns that storage-state files may contain sensitive cookies and headers and should not be committed to source control. Apply the same care to credentials sent to hosted APIs.
- Use an authorized, least-privilege test account when possible.
- Keep passwords, tokens, cookies, and state files out of source control and logs.
- Check the screenshot provider’s data handling and retention terms before sending sensitive pages or credentials.
- If a session or token is exposed, revoke or rotate it using the target service’s controls.
- Refresh or replace expired authentication state through the authorized login process; a screenshot API cannot make an invalid credential valid.
Troubleshooting a protected-page capture
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot shows a login page | Credentials were absent, invalid, expired, or not accepted by the site. | Check the final URL and a logged-in-only element; verify cookie domain/path and header value; refresh the session through the authorized login workflow. |
| A hosted request cannot reach the authenticated view | The site requires interaction beyond the cookie or header injection documented for the endpoint. | Use browser automation for the necessary steps, or verify from the provider’s current documentation that its workflow supports them. |
| Playwright times out after submitting credentials | The selector or expected post-login state may not match the site, or login may involve an additional redirect or challenge. | Use selectors and a success condition specific to the real page; inspect the authorized test run. Do not assume CAPTCHA or MFA completion is supported by a hosted screenshot endpoint. |
| A reused Playwright session appears logged out | The saved state may have expired, the site may require fresh authentication, or authentication depends on session storage. | Re-run the authorized login and save fresh state; handle session storage separately when the application uses it. |
| The image is blank or missing expected content | The page may not have finished rendering or the target element may not have loaded. | Wait for a meaningful page-specific selector rather than relying only on a fixed delay; verify that the target page is reached before capture. |
Cost, performance, and reliability considerations
Hosted capture reduces the browser infrastructure you need to operate, while Playwright gives you control over login steps at the cost of maintaining automation, browser execution, and secure session refresh. The right trade-off depends on whether your credential state is reusable and accepted by a hosted endpoint or must be established through interaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API log in with my username and password?
Some documented endpoints support HTTP Basic Authentication, but cookie/header support alone does not mean the service will interact with a login form. For form-based or multi-step authentication, use a browser workflow unless the provider explicitly documents the required interactions.
Will these tools handle MFA or CAPTCHA?
The documented capabilities covered here do not establish general MFA or CAPTCHA support. Do not assume a provider can complete those challenges; confirm its current documentation and use an authorized workflow.
Can I capture a page I do not have permission to access?
No. Only capture pages and use credentials you are authorized to access, and follow the target service’s rules.
