To stream a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live broadcast from Ubuntu Server 24.04, prepare a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then use FFmpeg on the server to send the sermon’s audio and video to YouTube over RTMPS with that broadcast’s stream key. Check the file and the FFmpeg build first: the right command depends on the file’s codecs and the encoders available on your server. Test the complete setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it for a service.
How the YouTube Live setup works
YouTube Live uses two connected objects: the stream is the input that receives data from your encoder, and the broadcast is the event viewers watch. Select or create the intended broadcast, then use its associated stream settings when configuring FFmpeg. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference describes stream configuration and health; its RTMPS ingestion guide explains the secure ingest connection.
The encoder reads a local sermon file at normal playback speed and sends one audio/video stream to YouTube. It does not upload the file as a YouTube video. Keep the Live Control Room available to check stream health and messages, and use its broadcast controls to start or end the viewer-facing event as appropriate.
Prepare the broadcast and protect its stream key
- Check the channel and broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose or create the broadcast, and confirm it is the one intended for the sermon. Channel eligibility and account-specific settings can affect what controls are available.
- Open the broadcast’s stream settings. Copy the ingestion URL and stream key shown for the selected stream. Use the exact endpoint and key YouTube supplies; do not substitute an address copied from an unrelated guide or broadcast.
- Use RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the TLS-secured extension of RTMP. Preserve the full URL, including its path and port where shown; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443.
- Keep the key private. Treat it as a credential. Avoid putting it in a script or command that other users can read, sharing it in logs or screenshots, or committing it to a repository. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before using it again.
Check the sermon file and Ubuntu encoder before streaming
Before choosing to copy the source codecs or transcode them, inspect the actual file and the installed FFmpeg build. The available FFmpeg package and encoder capabilities can vary, and no single tested Ubuntu Server 24.04 command applies to every installation.

- Confirm the file path is correct and the Linux account that will run FFmpeg can read it.
- Inspect the file’s video and audio streams: codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether an audio track exists. FFmpeg’s
ffprobeutility can report stream details when it is installed. - Check the local FFmpeg version and available encoders and protocols. Confirm that the build can produce the intended video and audio codecs and send an RTMPS output.
- Choose either compatible stream copy or real-time transcoding based on the source and YouTube’s accepted settings. Copying avoids a video encode but cannot fix an unsupported source codec or change its bitrate, frame rate, or resolution. Transcoding can set those output properties, but the server must be able to encode reliably in real time.
- Ensure the output contains one video stream and one audio stream. A file without audio, or a command that maps the wrong track, can result in a silent broadcast.
The OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide explains why its default MKV is resilient for local recording and why MP4 needs finalization; it also notes FLV’s use with RTMP and its limited H.264/AAC codec support. Those recording-container notes do not mean a sermon must be converted to FLV for FFmpeg to stream it. Check the actual source file and configure the outgoing stream separately.
Choose output settings for YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Verify that your FFmpeg build supports the combination you select.
For H.264, YouTube publishes these bitrate examples. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection or server can sustain the rate.

| Output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the recording, then confirm the server’s sustained upload capacity can support the chosen video bitrate plus audio and network overhead. A sermon with a static camera may not need a high frame rate; reducing output resolution or bitrate can be more dependable than trying to push a rate the connection cannot maintain. For an H.264 1080p30 output, YouTube’s current published table recommends 14 Mbps and lists 5 Mbps as the minimum. The same guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. It also gives 128 Kbps as the recommended stereo audio bitrate.
Send the recording with FFmpeg
There is no universally safe, tested command for every Ubuntu Server 24.04 host and sermon file. First verify the local FFmpeg build, source streams, and chosen output settings; then construct a command using the exact YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key. Do not treat a command copied without those checks as ready for a live service.
- Set the input. Use the readable, absolute path to the sermon recording so the process does not depend on its working directory.
- Select the streams. Map the intended video and audio tracks explicitly. If the source has no audio track, stop and resolve that before sending it as a sermon broadcast.
- Choose copy or transcode. Use stream copy only if the source codecs and parameters are suitable for YouTube. Otherwise select encoders supported by the installed build and configure the desired resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, bitrate, audio codec, and keyframe interval.
- Set RTMPS output. Send the result to the complete ingestion URL from the selected YouTube stream settings, with its stream key supplied as the stream name/key according to YouTube’s endpoint format. Keep credentials out of public shell history, scripts, and logs.
- Start the encoder and check both ends. Watch FFmpeg’s output for errors and the YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream-health messages. Do not assume a process starting successfully means viewers will receive a healthy broadcast.
For a changing key or repeatable operation, use a protected configuration or secret-handling approach appropriate to the server rather than embedding the key in a broadly readable file. Ensure the runtime account can access both that secret and the media file.

- Run a full preflight using the actual file or a representative segment. Listen for clean audio and check for video, synchronization, and unexpected black or frozen frames.
- Check that the server’s upload remains stable at the selected output rate and that FFmpeg continues to encode or copy without falling behind.
- Confirm YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, codecs, and audio before the audience is expected to watch.
- Keep the Live Control Room open so an operator can notice warnings and decide when to start or end the broadcast.
Run the stream unattended
For a headless server, keep FFmpeg under an appropriate process supervisor or scheduler, and decide how logs, restarts, and alerts will work. These are deployment choices rather than a YouTube-prescribed systemd configuration. A restart policy can recover a stopped process, but it cannot by itself diagnose a bad key, unsupported codec, failed network, or a broadcast that needs operator attention. Test recovery and alerting before depending on them during a service.
