Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() for a one-off QA image, set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page, or take a locator screenshot to focus on a component. For maintained visual regression checks, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() and review its baseline rather than treating a saved image as a pass/fail comparison.
Choose the right screenshot for the QA task
| Need | Playwright approach | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| One-time bug report or QA artifact | page.screenshot({ path }) |
The current page image; it does not compare the image with an expected result. |
| Long-page documentation | page.screenshot({ path, fullPage: true }) |
The full scrollable page in one image. |
| Specific component or error | locator.screenshot({ path }) |
The element matched by the locator, with less unrelated page context. |
| Visual regression test | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() |
A stabilized screenshot comparison against a reviewed reference image; use Playwright Test. |
| Evidence attached to a test step | Capture a screenshot buffer and call step.attach() |
An image associated with a named test step and reporter output. |
Capture a reproducible QA state
- Make the state explicit. Navigate to the relevant URL, sign in or seed test data as needed, and perform the action that reveals the state you need to document.
- Wait for a meaningful condition. Use a locator assertion or another deliberate synchronization point for the UI state. An arbitrary sleep can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
- Save the appropriate image. Use the page, full-page, or locator method below according to the evidence you need.
- Name and retain the artifact. Use a filename that identifies the test or state, and configure snapshot paths where your project needs a consistent location.
Viewport screenshot
Use a normal page screenshot when the visible screen is the evidence, such as a validation message in a checkout flow:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/checkout-error.png' });
The path option saves the image to the specified file.
Full-page screenshot
Capture the entire scrollable page when a QA record needs the whole document rather than only the current viewport:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/page.png', fullPage: true });
A full-page capture can be very tall. Prefer it when the whole layout matters; for a localized defect, a viewport or element capture may make the evidence easier to inspect.
Element screenshot
Use a locator to focus the artifact on a component, such as an alert:
await page.getByRole('alert').screenshot({ path: 'artifacts/alert.png' });
Locator screenshots are preferred over the discouraged legacy ElementHandle screenshot approach. A focused image is useful for a component defect, but retain a page-level screenshot as well if surrounding context is needed to understand the issue.

Attach screenshots to Playwright test reports
For evidence that should travel with a test step, capture a buffer without a file path and attach it with a descriptive name and content type:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
import { test } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout displays an error', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/checkout');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Place order' }).click();
await test.step('capture validation state', async step => {
const screenshot = await page.screenshot();
await step.attach('checkout-validation', {
body: screenshot,
contentType: 'image/png',
});
});
});
The attachment API copies the image to a location accessible to reporters after the attach call completes. The sample shows the pattern; adapt the route, setup, and action to the test in your project.
Use visual assertions for ongoing regression checks
A saved image documents a state, but it does not by itself establish whether the page changed. For an ongoing comparison in Playwright Test, write an assertion such as:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

import { expect, test } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/checkout');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout.png');
});
The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing with the expectation. On a first run, Playwright generates a reference screenshot; review it before adding it to the repository. A generated baseline is not automatically proof that the UI is correct.
When an intentional design change updates the expected image, use Playwright’s --update-snapshots workflow and review the resulting changes rather than accepting them blindly. Keep baseline creation and comparisons in a consistent browser and operating environment.

Animations
Direct screenshot capture allows animations by default, while screenshot assertions disable them by default. If animation frames create irrelevant variation in a one-off artifact, set animations: 'disabled':

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
await page.screenshot({
path: 'artifacts/checkout.png',
animations: 'disabled',
});
With animations disabled, finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled for the capture, then resumed. Do not disable motion if animation behavior itself is what QA needs to document.
Dynamic or sensitive regions
Mask volatile regions with locator masks when their changing content is irrelevant to the comparison. Playwright overlays the matched element’s bounding box, using pink by default. A mask can also conceal a real regression, so avoid masking any region whose behavior is under test.
For content that should be hidden or normalized, use screenshot style or the visual assertion’s stylePath option. Keep these overrides narrow so the artifact remains representative of the behavior being documented.

Image scale and format
Choose whether the image should represent CSS pixels or device pixels. scale: 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; scale: 'device' captures device pixels and can produce a larger image on a high-density display.
Playwright visual snapshots use PNG by default and support WebP when the snapshot name uses the .webp extension. The documentation describes these formats as lossless. Use a consistent extension and snapshot configuration in a project so artifacts are predictable.
Keep visual evidence reliable across runs
- Pin and record the environment. Rendering can differ with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare references in a consistent environment; use platform-specific expectations only when the project intentionally tests those differences.
- Synchronize on state, not elapsed time. Wait for a meaningful locator or condition before capture. Fixed delays do not guarantee that the page is ready.
- Review changed references. A passing comparison only says the rendered image matched its expectation; it does not establish that the expectation is desirable.
- Choose artifact scope deliberately. A full-page image preserves document context but may be unwieldy; a locator screenshot is focused but can omit context needed to diagnose the defect.
- Check the Playwright version pinned by the project. Options and defaults can change between releases; confirm exact behavior against the official documentation for the version you run.
