To keep worship songs in a fixed order on a continuous YouTube live stream, set the order in the encoder that sends the broadcast—not just in a YouTube playlist. In OBS, add the files to a VLC Video source, arrange them, leave Shuffle Playlist off, and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. Then connect OBS to YouTube Live and verify the preview, audio, and sequence before sharing the stream.
First, identify which playlist you need to reorder
YouTube has playlist controls for videos viewers play on YouTube. Open the playlist and drag videos into the desired order; the playlist panel on a watch page can also be reordered temporarily. These controls do not rearrange the files in an encoder’s outgoing live feed. For a continuous broadcast built from local media files, set the order in OBS or whichever encoder is sending the stream. YouTube’s playlist instructions describe its playback controls.
Choose the OBS source that matches your program
One prepared worship file
If the complete program is already one video file, add an OBS Media Source and enable its loop control if it should restart when playback ends. This is the simpler source model when you do not need to change the order of individual songs inside OBS.
Several separate song or service files
For a sequence made from multiple files, add a VLC Video source, then arrange the files in the source’s media list. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear in OBS. Set the order and repeat behavior in OBS
- Install VLC if needed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If the source is missing, install VLC and restart OBS before continuing.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the worship stream. Open its properties and add the media files in the intended sequence.
- Disable random playback. Leave Shuffle Playlist off. With shuffle off, OBS plays the configured sequence rather than choosing files randomly.
- Choose whether to repeat. Turn Loop Playlist on if the sequence should restart after the last file. OBS defines this setting as whether the source restarts after it has run out of media files. If you want the program to end instead, leave looping off.
- Check each file and transition. Play through the list in OBS and confirm that the intended songs appear in order, that audio is present, and that the final item behaves as expected. For a single-file program, test the Media Source loop setting instead.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live without exposing the key
In YouTube’s live-stream setup, get the stream URL and stream key, then enter the required connection details in OBS’s streaming settings. The key is a credential that lets an encoder send its feed to your channel: keep it private, do not include it in a public scene or screenshot, and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube documents the encoder connection details in Manage live stream settings.
Before announcing the broadcast, start a private or otherwise limited test if your channel setup allows it. Watch YouTube’s preview and confirm it shows the OBS scene and the expected media sequence, with usable audio. Do not assume that reordering the YouTube playlist changes what the encoder sends.

Check copyright and permissions before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, a placeholder may replace the stream; if the match remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even if you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. See Copyright issues with live streams.
Check the rights for the specific material and use, rather than assuming a general church performance license covers everything. Confirm coverage for each composition, arrangement or translation, specific recording, visual, destination, territory, archive, and term with the relevant rights holder or licensing provider. YouTube’s guidance explains its detection and allowlist process; it does not establish what any particular license covers.

Know what YouTube DVR changes—and what it does not
DVR is a viewer playback setting, not an encoder playlist-order control. It affects whether viewers can rewind a live stream; YouTube notes that rewind limits apply to very long live streams. It will not correct a shuffled or incorrectly ordered media list. See Turn on DVR on live streams.
Troubleshooting common playlist problems
- The songs play in the wrong order: Check the VLC Video source’s media list in OBS. Reordering a YouTube playlist does not reorder the encoder’s files.
- The next song is unpredictable: Open the source properties and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The playlist stops after the last file: Enable Loop Playlist for a multi-file VLC source, or the loop control for a single-file Media Source.
- VLC Video is not available in OBS: Install VLC, which OBS requires for this source, then reopen OBS and check again.
- YouTube shows the wrong feed or no feed: Check the OBS stream connection details and confirm that you are using the intended YouTube stream URL and private stream key. Check YouTube’s preview before sharing the public link.
- The live stream is replaced or interrupted: A third-party-content match may trigger YouTube’s live-stream response. Review the material’s permissions and ask the rights owner about allowlisting the channel where applicable.
