To set a thumbnail for an upcoming YouTube livestream, open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, find the scheduled stream under Manage, and edit its stream details. Add or replace the thumbnail there and save. The exact thumbnail control can vary by streaming method and Studio interface, so check the stream details rather than expecting an identical sequence for every type of stream.
Set or change a thumbnail for a scheduled encoder stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open Manage. To plan a new event, choose Schedule stream and create it; to update an event already scheduled, select it from the list.
- Open the stream details. During setup, complete the details; for an existing scheduled stream, choose Edit. Add or replace the custom thumbnail in the details, then save. YouTube documents these setup and editing routes, but the thumbnail field’s exact presentation can depend on the streaming method and interface. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings help cover the relevant routes.
- Return to the stream details before the event to confirm the change was saved. For an encoder stream, start the encoder early enough to check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before selecting Go live. The preview checks the incoming stream; YouTube’s guidance does not say it verifies the listing thumbnail. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
Thumbnail updates may take time to appear, and YouTube does not specify a fixed wait. Save well before the event, then check the scheduled stream details or watch page again. YouTube’s thumbnail help notes that changes can take time to show.
What to expect when streaming from a webcam
In YouTube’s webcam flow, after you enter the title, description, and privacy setting and select Next, the camera takes a thumbnail. If the stream is scheduled, you can later find it in Live Control Room under Manage and edit its settings. For a designed image instead of the camera snapshot, look in the stream’s editable details; the precise control can vary by method. YouTube’s webcam instructions describe the camera snapshot, not a universal thumbnail-editing path.
Prepare an image that fits YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s general custom-thumbnail guidance—not a universal specification for every Live Control Room workflow—recommends a 16:9 image, gives 3840 × 2160 pixels as a recommended resolution and 640 pixels as the minimum video-thumbnail width, and lists JPG and PNG as example formats. It also states a 50 MB desktop upload limit for video thumbnails. Treat those figures as general video-thumbnail advice; the interface used for a particular live stream may present different controls. The Google/YouTube live production guide separately describes a custom live-event thumbnail as a 16:9 image.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use a clear image that represents the event and remains legible at small sizes.
- Check the correct stream’s details after saving; do not assume a successful encoder preview confirms the thumbnail.
- Leave time for the change to appear, since YouTube gives no guaranteed propagation interval.
Check account eligibility
YouTube says custom video thumbnails are available to verified accounts. Its live-stream setup guidance also requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. These are related account prerequisites, but they do not guarantee that the same thumbnail control will appear in every streaming workflow. See custom thumbnail eligibility and YouTube’s live streaming requirements.
Troubleshoot thumbnail problems
- You cannot find a thumbnail field: Confirm you opened the correct scheduled stream’s details or Edit screen. Interface wording and controls differ by streaming method; webcam setup may initially use a camera snapshot.
- The old thumbnail still appears: Confirm the edit was saved, then check again later in the stream details or watch page. YouTube says updates may take time but does not give a fixed interval.
- The custom thumbnail option is unavailable: Check that the account is verified. Also confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance, including having no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
- The encoder preview looks right, but you are unsure about the listing image: Treat the preview as a check of the incoming stream, not proof that the thumbnail changed. Review the saved stream details separately.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the event is a pre-recorded video you want to keep live on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option; it does not set a thumbnail for a scheduled YouTube event. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It keeps the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
