If a scheduled website screenshot shows old content, first find out whether the browser received an old page, the capture happened before the updated content appeared, or the scheduler is showing an older image. These are separate problems and need different fixes. In an automation you control, disable the relevant browser cache or bypass the service worker only when evidence points to that layer, then wait for the updated content itself before taking the screenshot.
Find out which part is stale
Compare the scheduled image with the live page at the same URL. If possible, note the scheduled run time and the image’s timestamp. Then separate three possibilities:
- The page response is old: the browser may have reused a cached response, or a service worker may have returned an older version.
- The capture is early: navigation may have started, but scripts or the specific updated content may not have finished rendering.
- The image is old: the page may be current while the scheduler displays an artifact from an earlier run or a cached delivery.
If your automation exposes request logs or response inspection, compare the response content with the content visible in the screenshot. A current response paired with an old image points away from page-request caching and toward the scheduler’s run selection, stored artifact, or delivery path. Check that service’s history and settings; without knowing the scheduler, its artifact-retention behavior cannot be assumed.
Check browser cache and service workers separately
HTTP request caching and service-worker behavior are distinct layers. Puppeteer’s Page API documents controls for disabling request cache and bypassing service workers. Use the control that matches the evidence rather than changing both by default.

Puppeteer example
For an automation you control, these settings can be applied before navigation:

await page.goto('https://example.com');Replace the URL with the page you capture. Disable the cache if the browser appears to reuse an old response; bypass the service worker if the site uses one and its response may be stale. After changing a setting, inspect the response and page again to confirm whether the cause was addressed. These Puppeteer controls are not evidence that an unnamed screenshot scheduler exposes the same settings.

Wait for the updated content, not just navigation
A navigation event does not guarantee that the content you care about is ready for a screenshot. A page can continue loading resources and running scripts after navigation begins. Playwright’s navigation documentation describes this lifecycle; choose a readiness signal tied to the actual page content you need.
- Prefer waiting for a specific updated heading, value, or element to appear when your automation supports it.
- If the page updates after an action or asynchronous request, wait for that change rather than treating the initial document load as completion.
- Use a fixed delay only when there is no reliable page-specific signal, and verify it is long enough across normal runs.
The right selector or readiness condition depends on the site and is not established by the screenshot title alone. Playwright’s Page API documents page and screenshot-related browser controls, but the exact implementation depends on your chosen automation.

Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode in its visual comparisons documentation. Such differences may explain changed pixels, but do not by themselves establish why page content is stale.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Disabling cache without checking the response: first establish whether the browser actually received stale content; the old image may instead be a saved artifact.
- Assuming navigation means the page is ready: wait for the content the screenshot is meant to show.
- Changing browser settings in a managed scheduler without confirming support: provider-specific controls vary. Consult that service’s documentation or inspect the automation it runs.
- Treating pixel differences as stale content: compare the visible text and page state, then check the capture environment if only rendering differs.
