Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If YouTube Live reports “failed to connect to server — connection timed out”, first verify the server URL in your encoder and use YouTube’s RTMPS URL rather than a plain RTMP URL. If those are correct, check that your encoder supports RTMPS, then inspect encoder output and CPU load and test your outbound internet connection. A timeout alone does not identify the cause; the exact error and the results of these checks help narrow it down.
1. Identify what stopped
Before changing settings, note the encoder’s exact error message and when the interruption happened. A failure to connect at startup is different from a stream that connected and later lost its feed.
- Check whether the encoder still says it is sending.
- Check whether its local preview or recording continues with normal picture and sound.
- Look at Live Control Room’s stream status and health information.
- Note whether the interruption occurs immediately, after a similar length of time, or irregularly.
These observations help distinguish a connection problem from an encoder or source problem. They do not, by themselves, prove a particular cause.
2. Verify YouTube’s server URL and RTMPS protocol
YouTube’s instructions for the specific connection-timeout message say to check that the server URL is correct, use rtmps rather than only rtmp, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. See YouTube’s RTMPS encryption instructions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
- Reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon beside the URL field. Use the current URL shown there instead of relying on an old saved address.
- Enter that URL in the encoder’s server or ingest URL field, and confirm the encoder is configured for RTMPS.
- Check that the stream key entered in the encoder is the one associated with the intended YouTube stream. YouTube uses the key to accept the feed; its setup instructions explain where to find the URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
If the actual error is an SSL certificate error, not a generic connection timeout, YouTube also suggests checking the URL and trying port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration. This is specific to the SSL-error case; do not treat port 443 as a universal timeout fix. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
3. Check encoder output, software and load
Update the encoder to a current version, then inspect its logs, output and CPU load while it is trying to stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and, when possible, a local archive of its output. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Local video or audio is already faulty: troubleshoot the camera, media source, audio routing or encoder before changing YouTube settings.
- Encoder errors or unusually high CPU load: reduce the workload or investigate the specific encoder error; check the encoder vendor’s support guidance if needed.
- Local output looks healthy but YouTube reports a problem: move on to testing the outbound connection.
- Startup error mentioning the key: verify the key and, where YouTube’s startup-error guidance calls for it, generate a new key and update the encoder. A midstream timeout alone does not establish that the key is at fault.
4. Test the connection and choose sustainable settings
Test upload performance and choose a bitrate and quality your connection can sustain reliably. Run a test with motion and audio similar to the planned stream, and watch Live Control Room’s stream-health information during the test. If a connection test shows a problem, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. Its guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and Troubleshoot live-stream issues.
Encoder settings YouTube specifies
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, up to 60 frames per second. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it also recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Consult YouTube’s current table for the bitrate matching your codec, resolution and frame rate, since the appropriate value depends on those choices.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
As one specific reference point, YouTube’s current table recommends 10 Mbps and gives a 5 Mbps minimum for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps. Those are YouTube settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. The table may change, so check the linked settings page before an event.
If your tests point to unstable Wi-Fi, try a wired Ethernet connection if practical, then test again. That can help isolate a local wireless issue; it will not fix an ISP outage, an incorrect URL, lack of RTMPS support or an encoder fault.

5. Test before the event and finish normally
Do a complete test stream before the next event and monitor stream health while it runs. This can reveal a configuration or connection problem before you are live to viewers. YouTube explains the stream setup and how the encoder sends its feed at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
When the event is over, stopping the encoder ends its feed; that is the normal way to finish, not a remedy for an unexpected timeout. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a stream that has already disconnected, use your encoder’s logs and Live Control Room status to investigate rather than assuming the archive limit caused the interruption.

6. Match the symptom to the next check
| What you observe | Next action |
|---|---|
| “Failed to connect to server — connection timed out” | Verify the current server URL, use RTMPS, and confirm encoder RTMPS support. |
| SSL certificate error | Check the URL; consider port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration as YouTube suggests for this error. |
| Encoder preview or local recording is also bad | Investigate the source, audio/video routing, encoder errors and CPU load. |
| Encoder output looks healthy but the stream has trouble | Test outbound internet and compare the result with Live Control Room’s health status; contact your ISP if the test indicates a connection issue. |
| All checks appear healthy, but the interruption persists | Collect the exact error and encoder logs, then contact the encoder vendor and use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting route. |
There is no single fix established for every RTMP timeout. The encoder, network, ISP, URL or another condition may be involved; use the failed check to choose the next step.
