FFmpeg’s exit code 1 does not identify why a YouTube live stream failed. Find the first specific error in the complete FFmpeg output, then determine whether the failure happened while opening the input, selecting streams or initializing an encoder, creating the output, or sending data to YouTube. If FFmpeg is sending data, check the timestamped stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room.
Capture the full error before changing settings
The final line—often something like “Conversion failed”—is usually less useful than the first concrete error that came before it. Keep the complete stderr output and note exactly when the process fails: before the input opens, during encoder setup, while opening the output, or after packets begin sending.
- Save a report: FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes
-report, which writes a report containing the command line and log output. Treat that file as sensitive: it may include a YouTube stream key or other private information. - Record the build: capture the output of
ffmpeg -version. Available encoders and options depend on the installed build. - Redact credentials: replace the stream key in the command and output URL with a placeholder before sharing logs publicly. Do not publish a live key or a report that contains it.
- Locate the first specific error: retain preceding warnings too; they may explain the final failure.
Do not infer a key, codec, network, or input problem from the number 1 alone. Without the exact command and log, the cause cannot be attributed.
Check which options apply to each input and output
FFmpeg processes inputs, applies stream selection and any filters or encoding, then writes outputs. The order of options matters: the FFmpeg manual says, “All options apply ONLY to the next input or output file and are reset between files.”

- Input-specific options belong before the relevant
-i. - Output encoding, bitrate, and muxer options must govern the intended output, so check their position relative to that output URL.
- Check each
-mapselection against the streams actually present in the input. - With multiple inputs or outputs, review the options around every
-iand output URL rather than assuming an option applies globally.
Use the first specific log message to choose what to investigate. A bitrate change cannot fix a file that will not open, and changing a stream key will not resolve an encoder initialization error.
Follow the log to the failing stage
If the input will not open or probe
Check that the input path or capture device is correct and accessible, and that the protocol is appropriate. If FFmpeg reports that a file cannot be opened or does not exist, start with the path, device, or permissions. If it cannot identify streams or reports missing codec parameters, investigate the input format or probing. These are interpretations to verify against the actual error text, not explanations for every exit code 1.

If stream mapping or encoder initialization fails
Compare the mapped streams with the output options and the encoders available in your FFmpeg build. Look for a named unavailable encoder, unsupported pixel format or profile, incompatible dimensions or frame rate, or an option the selected encoder does not use. Confirm the intended audio and video streams exist and the output options are attached to the correct output.
If the command selects hardware encoding, verify both that the installed FFmpeg build exposes that encoder and that the required device and runtime are available. A command containing a hardware-encoder name does not establish that the machine can use it.

If opening or muxing the output fails
Read the output-stage error with the URL’s credentials hidden. Separate a local muxer or output-initialization problem from a connection rejection, timeout, or broken connection. Investigate YouTube’s key, event setup, or connectivity when the log points to the output stage or YouTube reports that it is not receiving a valid stream—not as a first response to any code-1 exit.
If FFmpeg connects and sends data
Open YouTube’s Live Dashboard or Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and its timestamped errors. YouTube says these tools check for errors in the stream being sent. Red errors are critical and can prevent an event from starting or affect viewers; yellow errors are moderate and can reduce quality. Follow the message shown for your stream rather than applying a generic command copied from elsewhere.

- Format and codec: match the Live Control Room message and the applicable ingestion guidance. YouTube’s incorrect-format guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as a supported expected combination; its current general RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings also list H.265/HEVC and AV1 video. The right choice depends on the error and configuration context.
- Audio: check that the expected audio stream is present, uses a supported codec, and has the required channel configuration. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS settings specify 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio; its API issue guidance also lists 48 kHz as a recommended sample rate. Resolve a conflict by following the exact health message and relevant protocol guidance.
- Video and event settings: check that the stream has the expected progressive video, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If manually choosing a resolution, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames. Its error guidance notes that ingestion errors can lead to incorrect GOP sizes and that a closed GOP is required for optimal transcoding.
- Bitrate and connection capacity: use the current YouTube encoder table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. As a specific example—not a universal requirement—the current table lists 1080p at 30 fps as H.264 minimum 5 Mbps and recommended 14 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 minimum 4 Mbps and recommended 10 Mbps. If available upload bandwidth cannot sustain the chosen resolution, YouTube’s error guidance suggests lowering it. Test before the event and monitor stream health while live.
- Primary and backup streams: when using both, check that resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings match.
If you have an API integration, YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes configuration issues in status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[]. Use each issue’s type and actual/expected fields when available instead of treating a generic status as a unique FFmpeg diagnosis.

- Whether FFmpeg fails before sending or after connecting.
- The encoder and codec.
- Resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
- Video and audio bitrate and audio format.
- The exact FFmpeg error and any YouTube health message.
That makes each result interpretable; changing several settings together does not show which change mattered.
Common diagnostic dead ends
- Only sharing the final exit line: it omits the earlier error. Capture the complete output and report.
- Posting a report without checking it: reports can expose the stream key. Redact credentials before sharing.
- Moving or adding flags at random: options apply to the next input or output, so an otherwise valid setting may affect the wrong stream.
- Changing YouTube ingest settings before confirming FFmpeg sends: first establish that the input opened, streams mapped, and output connection began.
- Using a bitrate as a universal fix: select it for the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check whether the connection can sustain it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than diagnose this FFmpeg command, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded quality streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Frequently Asked Questions
What information should I include when asking for help with exit code 1?
Share the exact command with the stream key redacted, FFmpeg version/build, input details, and the complete log. Also say whether failure occurred before sending or after FFmpeg began sending data.
Does exit code 1 mean YouTube rejected my stream key?
No. The exit code alone does not identify a cause. Check the first specific FFmpeg error and, if data was sent, YouTube’s stream-health message.
