You can then retrieve the job status or use a completion webhook, download the exported file, and store it somewhere durable if you need it beyond CloudConvert’s 24-hour export-URL window.
How the CloudConvert screenshot workflow works
CloudConvert models work as jobs made up of tasks. For a website capture, the capture task takes a page URL and output format; a second task can export the result as a URL. The capture operation supports PDF, PNG, and JPG use cases. CloudConvert’s capture operation documentation describes the operation as converting a website to PDF or capturing a PNG or JPG screenshot.
The basic sequence is:
- Create a CloudConvert API key with only the required permissions.
- Submit a job with a named
capture-websitetask and anexport/urltask that takes its input from the capture task. - Wait for completion using a webhook or retrieve the job status.
- Get the exported file URL and download the screenshot. Copy it to durable storage if it must remain available after the temporary export link expires.
Create and protect an API key
CloudConvert API v2 uses Bearer-token authentication. Create an API key in your CloudConvert account and grant only the task and job permissions your integration needs. Keep the key in server-side configuration or a secrets manager; do not put it in browser JavaScript, a public repository, or a client application. CloudConvert says API keys do not expire unless revoked, so revoke or rotate them according to your security policy. See the CloudConvert API introduction for authentication, scopes, and API details.
The examples below use an environment variable named CLOUDCONVERT_API_KEY. Replace https://example.com with a page you are authorized to capture. These examples show the documented job shape; verify the current operation reference or Job Builder for format-specific options before relying on additional parameters.

}'The response represents a job and its tasks. Save the returned job identifier so your application can track completion. A successful job submission does not mean the screenshot is already ready to download; check the job or task status before consuming the export result.
Choose a completion path and retrieve the file
Webhook for recurring automation
For a production workflow, configure a completion webhook and have your endpoint process the finished job. CloudConvert recommends webhooks for asynchronous completion. Your handler should validate incoming requests using CloudConvert’s current webhook guidance, identify the completed job, and retrieve its export task result. Avoid assuming that a job has finished merely because the submission request succeeded.

Poll job status when a synchronous flow suits
For a small integration or a workflow that can wait, retrieve the job status using the job ID and the API’s job retrieval endpoint. Continue only once the job and export task have completed, and handle failed or error states explicitly. The CloudConvert quickstart demonstrates synchronous job retrieval as an alternative to a webhook.
Download before the export link expires
Export URLs in the quickstart are valid for 24 hours. Download the image or PDF promptly, then place it in your own object storage or application storage if you need longer retention. Do not treat a temporary export URL as a permanent public asset link.

Configure the capture for the page you need
The minimal job above requests a PNG and otherwise uses the operation’s defaults. CloudConvert’s website screenshot page describes full-page capture as the default and discusses selector waits, viewport and zoom customization, authorization headers for protected resources, and synchronous or asynchronous processing. The exact parameter names and supported combinations can depend on the output format, so check the current Website Screenshot API page and operation reference before adding options.
- Output format: Use PNG or JPG for an image screenshot, or PDF for a document-style capture. Choose based on downstream use, not just file extension.
- Page readiness: If a page populates content after initial load, investigate a selector wait such as
wait_for_elementand choose a selector that appears only when the needed content is ready. The product page showswait_for_element: "body"as an example; that only establishes that the body exists, not that an application’s data has finished loading. - Viewport and zoom: Specify a viewport when layout consistency matters. CloudConvert’s product page demonstrates a width of
1440; confirm the supported option names and units in the current docs for your selected output. - Protected pages: The product page describes authorization headers for protected resources. Use credentials only for pages and accounts you are permitted to access, and keep secrets out of logs and exported URLs.
- Full page or viewport: Full-page capture is described as the default on the screenshot product page. If you need a viewport-only result or a specific region, verify the corresponding operation settings rather than assuming the default matches your layout.
Choose API, SDK, CLI, or a no-code integration
The direct API is useful when your application needs control over job creation and completion handling. CloudConvert also lists official SDKs for PHP, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Java, and .NET, plus CLI and integrations such as Zapier, Power Automate, Make, and n8n. These are alternate ways to submit and manage work; the capture still depends on the same task configuration and should be checked against the current API behavior.

Use the generic API base https://api.cloudconvert.com/v2 unless your data-location requirements call for a documented regional endpoint. CloudConvert says it selects a nearby processing region by default and documents Germany (eu-central) and Virginia, USA (us-east) regional endpoints. Confirm contractual and residency requirements separately before selecting a region.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
- Rate limiting: CloudConvert documents dynamic rate limits. Job or task creation can return HTTP 429 with a
Retry-Afterheader. Respect that header, use bounded retries with backoff, and avoid retrying a submission blindly in a way that creates duplicate jobs. - Timeouts: The capture operation documentation lists a default timeout of five hours. This is a timeout ceiling/default in the operation documentation, not a target response time or a promise that a capture will finish quickly.
- Storage: Export links are temporary, so schedule downloads and handle storage failures independently from capture completion. For longer retention, copy finished files to storage you control.
- Price: CloudConvert’s screenshot product page advertises a starting price of $0.008 per file. That is a vendor-published starting price, not a guaranteed quote; check the current price calculator and applicable plan and configuration before estimating recurring spend.
- Rendering variability: CloudConvert’s marketing page describes a headless Chrome rendering pipeline and automatic cookie-banner handling. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent performance test. Site scripts, consent flows, challenge pages, and asynchronous content can affect the output, so validate the result for the pages and conditions you actually need.

Can CloudConvert save the capture directly to permanent storage?
The workflow shown here exports a temporary URL. CloudConvert also supports exporting to storage providers; configure a suitable storage export if you want a storage destination as part of the job, and confirm provider setup in its current API documentation.
Can I capture a page with an anti-bot challenge?
The cited CloudConvert documentation does not establish how every site-specific challenge or access control will behave. Test only pages you are authorized to capture and do not assume a challenge can be bypassed.
Can I automate screenshots without writing an API client?
