Send a test signal and check Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor before changing YouTube settings. If Switchboard shows incoming video but YouTube does not go live, troubleshoot the YouTube destination instead.
Understand the two connection layers
A Switchboard Live stream has two separate connections: your encoder sends video to a Switchboard workflow, and Switchboard sends it onward to YouTube. Each workflow has its own server URL and stream key. The YouTube destination uses separate credentials, so a key from one service should not be substituted for the other. Switchboard’s workflow documentation describes the workflow credentials and status indicators.
Check whether the encoder is reaching Switchboard
- Open the intended workflow in Switchboard. Reveal its workflow key, which is hidden by default, and note the matching server URL. Confirm that the encoder is configured for this workflow, not another one.
- Compare the encoder’s settings with the workflow credentials. Switchboard’s initial setup guide instructs users to copy the workflow URL and key into the encoder, then send video to test the connection. If you reset the workflow key, the old key is no longer the one to use for the next broadcast; replace it in the encoder with the new key. See Switchboard’s setup guidance.
- Start a test signal from the encoder. Look for video in Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor and check whether the status changes from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” Incoming video confirms that the encoder-to-Switchboard leg is working. It does not, by itself, put the stream live on YouTube. Switchboard keeps Go Live disabled until it detects incoming video.
If Switchboard still shows no video, keep the investigation on the encoder-to-workflow leg. Verify that the encoder is running and that its URL and key exactly match the selected workflow. Also check whether another encoder is already sending to that workflow: Switchboard says a workflow can receive content from only one encoder at a time when used by multiple devices. If you need separate encoder feeds, each workflow has its own credential pair. Its FAQ covers workflow keys and this single-encoder constraint.
If Switchboard receives video but YouTube does not go live
When the Confidence Monitor shows video, stop changing the Switchboard workflow key unless there is evidence that it is wrong. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the exact health warning or error, then follow that message. YouTube recommends checking encoder software, the feed’s picture and sound, encoder errors, CPU load, local archive quality, and outbound internet strength. Refresh the YouTube key only when the destination points to it
If YouTube reports an invalid or unusable destination key, get a new key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder or destination configuration that sends to YouTube. This is distinct from resetting the Switchboard workflow key. YouTube’s guidance on third-party encoders explains how to replace its key: set up a live stream with an encoder.
Match configuration errors to the setting YouTube names
YouTube may report unsupported audio or video codecs, an incorrect codec profile, a bitrate or resolution outside the selected settings, or mismatched primary and backup stream parameters. Change the setting identified by the error and compare it with the YouTube ingest configuration; avoid changing unrelated encoder settings speculatively. YouTube lists examples in its live-stream error messages reference.

If the displayed message is “Daily live stream limit achieved,” YouTube says the channel has reached a limit on how many live streams it can create in a 24-hour period. This is a YouTube policy limit, not a Switchboard key mismatch; use the message shown in Live Control Room to guide what to do next.
If YouTube schedules the stream instead of going live
Check whether the active Switchboard template has a YouTube stream title. Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing title in the active template as a cause of this symptom and advises stopping the stream and updating the YouTube title in the designated field before trying again. Escalate using the point of failure
- No video reaches Switchboard: after confirming the selected workflow and its URL/key, use Switchboard’s Help button to open its knowledge base or submit a support ticket. Include the encoder name, the workflow involved, and whether the test signal is running.
- Switchboard receives video, but YouTube reports an error: use YouTube’s report-a-problem path and include the exact Live Control Room message. Note whether the preview appears healthy and any encoder or connection warnings.
