Use a screenshot API when you need a configured image or PDF of a known URL or supplied HTML. Use a browser automation API when you must interact with the page, preserve state across steps, or decide what to do next based on what the browser shows. An API can return a screenshot without giving you a controllable, persistent browser.
What is the difference?
| Question | Screenshot API | Browser automation API or session |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Render a URL or supplied HTML and return an image or PDF from one configured request. | Control a browser to perform one or more steps; taking a screenshot can be one step or result. |
| State | Often limited to the individual request. Browserless describes its REST endpoints as stateless, single-action calls. | A managed browser session or connection can retain a live context for interactive, multi-step work. |
| Interaction | Can offer capture settings such as waits, viewport, full-page mode, or a selector. It does not necessarily let code react to page changes in real time. | Can navigate, click, fill fields, inspect changes, and choose subsequent actions through browser-control code. |
| Integration | Usually a small HTTP request/response integration. Browserless says its REST interface does not require Puppeteer or Playwright. | Requires browser-control logic and a session or runtime, unless a service abstracts those details. |
| What can go wrong | May return a blank image, a CAPTCHA or denial page, missing content, or an incomplete lazy-loaded page. | Provides more control, but cannot guarantee that a site permits automation or that rendering is pixel-identical between runs. |
Browserless’s distinction applies to its documented interfaces, not every vendor’s products. Some providers offer both screenshot endpoints and browser sessions; choose the interface that matches the workflow.
When a screenshot API is the better fit
Choose a screenshot endpoint when the target and desired capture can be described before the request. Typical jobs include generating preview images, recording a known page, or producing a page image inside a one-off job.
- You know the URL or have the HTML to render.
- You can specify the desired viewport, output format, selector or capture area in advance.
- A configured wait is enough; the program does not need to inspect the page and branch to a new action.
- The browser does not need to preserve a live context across multiple calls.
For example, Browserless documents a POST request to its /screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL and optional screenshot settings. A request can return a screenshot without requiring you to write Puppeteer or Playwright code. See the Browserless screenshot API documentation.

When browser automation is the better fit
Use a browser session when capturing the page is the final step of an interaction rather than the whole task. Browser automation is appropriate when your code needs to log in, change a setting, submit a form, navigate a sequence, inspect the result, or choose the next step based on observed content.
- Use the session to retain cookies or other browser state across actions.
- Wait for a specific state change, then inspect the page before continuing.
- Branch on what the page displays, rather than relying only on a preset delay or selector.
- Take the screenshot after the required page setup is complete.
Browserless says its ordinary REST calls do not preserve cookies or state between responses and cannot perform a multi-step sequence such as clicking, filling a form, and scraping the result in one request. Its managed browser connection supports Playwright or Puppeteer workflows. See Browserless connection URLs and its REST API overview.
Can you take a screenshot with an API?
Yes. A screenshot API can take a screenshot directly from a URL or supplied HTML and return the rendered output. The exact request shape and options vary by service. Browserless documents a POST to /screenshot; its screenshot settings include options such as full-page, viewport, clip, and selector capture. Do not assume that a screenshot endpoint also offers interactive browser control: check whether the particular API documents persistent sessions, state, and real-time interaction.

Choose the capture settings before integrating
Viewport, full page, or one element
Decide whether you need only the visible viewport, the entire document, a clipped region, or one selected element. These are different capture outcomes; a full-page image can be much taller than a viewport image. Browserless documents viewport, full-page, clip, and selector settings in its screenshot API reference.

A fixed delay, a network condition, and waiting for a particular selector can produce different page states. Choose a readiness condition that corresponds to the content you need, and verify it on the actual target. A page may finish its initial load before client-rendered or asynchronously loaded content appears.
Account for long pages and lazy loading
A full-page capture does not guarantee that every lazy-loaded image or section has been requested. ScreenshotOne documents a section-by-section scroll-and-stitch option; it also notes that scroll distance and pause duration affect whether lazy content loads. Tune those values against the pages you intend to capture. See ScreenshotOne’s options documentation.

Handle motion and animated content
If screenshots will be compared pixel by pixel, consider animation, video, canvas, and animated images. ScreenshotOne describes reduced motion as best-effort: custom JavaScript animations, canvas, or animated images may still move, so identical output is not guaranteed. Its options documentation explains the relevant capture considerations.
A practical implementation decision
- Write down the required end state. If it is simply “render this URL at this size,” start with a screenshot API. If it involves actions or decisions, plan for browser automation.
- Identify the state requirements. Determine whether cookies, login state, or other context must persist between actions. Confirm that the chosen interface documents that behavior.
- Specify the image. Choose viewport or full page, selector or clip if needed, output format, and a readiness condition.
- Test on representative pages. Check for missing lazy-loaded content, blank results, anti-bot responses, and differences caused by motion.
- Use the simplest interface that meets the workflow. A direct application API can handle setup or data checks when available; reserve browser automation for user-visible steps that actually need a browser.
There is no documented comparative benchmark here establishing that one category is faster, more reliable, or cheaper in general. For a production decision, measure the pages, regions, concurrency, formats, and failure conditions that matter to your own deployment.

Common capture failures and how to respond
The result is blank or shows a CAPTCHA or access-denied page
Do not treat that image as a successful capture of the intended page. Browserless identifies blank captures, CAPTCHA or access-denied pages, and missing elements as signs that the target may be blocking automation. Check the result and the page’s access behavior; do not assume that switching from a screenshot endpoint to browser automation will bypass the restriction. See the Browserless screenshot documentation.

Images or sections are missing from a full-page result
Check whether the page loads content on scroll. Try a scroll-and-stitch capture where the provider supports it, and adjust scroll distance or pauses so lazy-loaded elements have time to appear. ScreenshotOne notes that these settings can affect lazy loading in its options documentation.
The page is captured before the needed content appears
Replace a generic wait with a condition tied to the content, such as waiting for a selector, if the endpoint supports it. If your next action depends on inspecting what appeared, use a browser automation session instead of trying to make a one-shot endpoint act like an interactive browser.
Repeated captures differ around animated areas
Reduce motion where available and test the page’s own animations. Reduced-motion handling is not a guarantee that JavaScript-driven motion, canvas, or animated image content will freeze; exclude or mask those areas if your comparison process permits.

Later API calls have lost login or cookie state
Check whether the API is stateless. Browserless documents its REST endpoints as stateless, single-action calls; use a session-based browser workflow if multiple actions must share a live context.

For a configured one-call capture, ScreenshotNeo is the screenshot API alternative to try first: it removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, with tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.

Does a screenshot API always return the actual page?
No. A request can produce a blank capture, an access-denied or CAPTCHA page, or incomplete content. Check the returned result rather than assuming that a successful HTTP response means the intended page was captured.
Can I use a screenshot endpoint for a logged-in page?
Only if that service and endpoint support the required authentication and state handling. For workflows that need state to persist over multiple browser actions, use a session-based browser automation interface.
