Then check whether request interception blocked them, whether capture happened before the app finished rendering, and whether your viewport and media settings match the page you expect. A screenshot shows the browser’s rendered page; it cannot restore styles that failed to load.
Start with a reliable capture baseline
Set the viewport before navigating, wait for the page to reach a useful state, and then take the screenshot. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide uses networkidle2 as a navigation wait condition; treat it as a starting point, not proof that every required stylesheet loaded.
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
// If the app applies styles after navigation, wait for its real ready state here.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
See the Puppeteer Screenshots guide and Page API reference. If the site inserts styles or toggles classes after navigation, wait for a page-specific selector or state before capture. For a page with ongoing network activity, a meaningful application condition is often more useful than waiting for network idle indefinitely.
Check whether CSS and font requests succeeded
Inspect request and response evidence before changing screenshot options. Record failed requests, response statuses for stylesheet and font resources, page console errors, and the URLs involved. A stylesheet blocked by the server, a failed font request, or a request your own interception handler aborts can all leave the rendered page looking unstyled.

If you enabled request interception, every intercepted request must be continued, responded to, aborted, or completed through cache; requests can stall until the handler takes action. Check rules that filter by resource type, especially stylesheet and font. Puppeteer’s Page API documents interception behavior. Chrome Developers also illustrates how intercepting and aborting resources can affect rendered output in its headless rendering article.
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
console.error('Request failed:', request.resourceType(), request.url(), request.failure());
});
page.on('response', response => {
const request = response.request();
if (['stylesheet', 'font'].includes(request.resourceType())) {
console.log('Asset response:', response.status(), request.resourceType(), response.url());
}
});
page.on('console', message => {
if (message.type() === 'error') console.error('Page console:', message.text());
});
These listeners help identify failures; they do not by themselves fix them. For protected CSS or fonts, separately verify that the page has the cookies, headers, origin, and access the endpoint requires.
Wait for the app’s rendered state
Navigation completion and application readiness are different. A page can become quiet on the network before client-side code inserts its content, changes classes, or applies styles. After goto(), wait for a selector or other condition that represents the state you intend to capture. Use Puppeteer’s wait APIs documented in the Page API.

A fixed sleep may make a screenshot look better by chance, but it can conceal the actual failure and make captures slow or inconsistent. Prefer a condition tied to the app. If that condition never occurs, investigate the app’s state and its network requests rather than simply increasing the delay.
Check how the page HTML was supplied
When navigating to a URL
Use the normal page URL when you need the site’s usual origin, base URL, authentication context, and application lifecycle. Then inspect the actual CSS and font requests: navigating to a URL does not guarantee that every asset is reachable or authorized.
When using page.setContent()
Confirm the supplied HTML includes a stylesheet link or inline style, and that linked CSS and other assets resolve from the context in which the content is loaded. Relative URLs may not resolve as they do on the original site; this is a practical URL-resolution issue, not a special guarantee made by Puppeteer. The Page API documents setContent() and addStyleTag().

To isolate a stylesheet-loading problem, add known CSS directly or inline the stylesheet:
await page.setContent('<div class="sample">Styled test</div>');
await page.addStyleTag({ content: '.sample { color: red; font-size: 24px; }' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'style-test.png' });
If this test is styled but the original page is not, the screenshot mechanism can render CSS; focus on the original stylesheet links, asset URLs, or page state. Chrome Developers’ headless rendering article shows an approach that replaces fetched stylesheet links with equivalent inline <style> content.

Responsive rules can change layout and visibility at different viewport sizes. Set the intended viewport before navigation, and apply device emulation before loading the page when the target depends on device metrics, touch, or user agent. Puppeteer notes that some sites do not expect viewport changes after load and that changing it can cause a reload; see the Page API and setViewport reference.

If CSS loaded but the appearance still differs, check whether the relevant rules depend on a media type. Puppeteer exposes emulateMediaType(); its API reference discusses selecting screen media for PDF generation. Do not assume that screenshots use print styles by default. Use media emulation only when the page’s media-dependent rules explain the mismatch.
If the files loaded, debug the CSS that actually applies
When stylesheet responses succeed, move from network debugging to browser rendering:
- Confirm the expected element exists in the rendered DOM.
- Inspect its computed styles and check whether another rule overrides the expected declaration.
- Check whether the application added the class or state that activates the rule.
- Compare the page’s actual viewport and media conditions with the ones the CSS targets.
These checks distinguish a missing resource from a selector, cascade, or application-state issue. Puppeteer does not inherently remove a page’s CSS when taking a screenshot.

Common failure patterns and fixes
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Page is nearly plain HTML | Stylesheet request failed, returned an error, or was aborted | Inspect the CSS URL and response; correct access or interception rules. |
| Some text looks wrong, but layout is styled | Font requests failed or were blocked | Inspect font requests and the server’s access requirements. |
| Screenshot varies between runs | App applies CSS or state after navigation | Wait for an application-specific selector or state before capture. |
| Layout differs from the browser view | Viewport, device emulation, or media queries differ | Set the intended metrics before navigation and verify relevant media rules. |
| Live page works, supplied HTML does not | setContent() HTML lacks styles or uses unresolved asset paths |
Check links and URL resolution; try addStyleTag() or inline CSS to isolate the cause. |
| Navigation or capture hangs | Interception handler leaves a request unresolved, or the app never becomes network-idle | Ensure every intercepted request gets an action; wait for a meaningful page condition instead of relying on network idle. |

FAQ
Does Puppeteer remove CSS from screenshots?
No. A screenshot captures the browser’s rendered page. If styling is absent, investigate failed or blocked resources, page readiness, HTML and asset paths, and rendering conditions.
Should I use networkidle2 for every page?
No. It is a useful starting wait condition, but pages with ongoing network activity or delayed application rendering may need a page-specific readiness condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes emulateMediaType('screen') fix missing CSS?
Only when the mismatch is caused by media-dependent styling. First establish that the relevant stylesheet loaded and the page reached the intended state.
