If Puppeteer is not the right fit for capturing website screenshots in Node.js, the main alternatives are Playwright when you want to keep browser automation in your own code, or a hosted screenshot API when you would rather send a URL to a service than operate a browser. ScreenshotNeo is the first hosted service to try: it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean screenshots.
Choose by how much browser control you need
Puppeteer is a browser automation library: your application launches or connects to a browser and controls page navigation and capture. A hosted screenshot API changes that model: your application submits a URL or request to a service that runs the browser and returns an image. Browserless offers both a REST screenshot endpoint and remote-browser connections for Puppeteer or Playwright.
| Your priority | Path to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep navigation and browser interaction in your Node.js application | Playwright or Puppeteer | You retain a browser-library workflow. The available sources do not establish a complete feature comparison between Playwright and Puppeteer. |
| Submit a URL without operating a browser locally | ScreenshotNeo, Browserless REST screenshot API, or ScreenshotOne API | Browser execution is hosted; verify each provider’s current availability, limits and commercial terms. |
| Use a browser library but outsource browser execution | Connect Puppeteer or Playwright to Browserless | Your code still controls the browser through a library, while the browser session runs remotely. |
| Reduce reliance on a hosted provider | Run browser automation in your own environment | This avoids the hosted-service dependency, but means your team operates the browser environment. |
The documentation describes implementation paths, not independent speed, reliability or screenshot-quality benchmarks. Choose based on your capture requirements and infrastructure constraints rather than an unsupported performance ranking.
Keep browser automation: Playwright or Puppeteer
If the screenshot is one step in a larger browser workflow—such as navigating through pages, waiting for an element, or interacting with a site—using a browser automation library keeps those controls in your application. Puppeteer’s documented flow is to launch a browser, open a page, navigate, capture, and close the browser. It also supports taking a screenshot of an element with ElementHandle.screenshot(); a target outside the viewport can be scrolled into view for capture. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPuppeteer’s screenshot options include full-page capture, clipping to a region, output formats, quality settings, output paths and transparent backgrounds. Quality does not apply to PNG. Consult the Puppeteer screenshot options reference for the available options and types for your installed version.

Runnable Puppeteer example
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. This example saves a full-page PNG and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Choose a wait condition that matches the page: a site with persistent network activity may not reach a network-idle condition promptly. For a focused capture, locate the element and call its screenshot() method rather than capturing the entire page. Exact options can vary with the Puppeteer version you install.
Use a hosted screenshot API
A hosted API is a better fit when the application only needs to provide a URL and receive a screenshot, rather than maintain browser startup, navigation and teardown code. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and its response identifies whether a page was clean and billable. Browserless documents a REST screenshot endpoint and remote browser connections; ScreenshotOne documents a Node.js SDK and a direct HTTP workflow.
ScreenshotNeo: one request for an image
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its endpoint accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The following cURL request saves a WebP screenshot; replace the sample URL with the page you need and supply your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

ScreenshotNeo also accepts the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make migration easier. Its broader options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF page settings, HTML/CSS rendering, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparency, resizing, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture and a usage API. You can turn off the pre-capture cleanup steps individually.
Browserless: REST capture or a remote browser
Browserless documents a POST /screenshot REST endpoint. Its documentation describes PNG or JPEG output, full-page screenshots, selector-based element capture, clipping to a region, and wait and navigation controls. Refer to its screenshot endpoint documentation for request details.
If you need library-level browser control without running the browser locally, Browserless also documents Node.js connections using puppeteer-core and playwright-core. The former connects Puppeteer over WebSocket; the latter connects Playwright to a Playwright browser endpoint. This keeps navigation and capture in a familiar automation flow while moving browser execution to a remote service. See the Browserless browser-as-a-service documentation for its connection examples.

ScreenshotOne: SDK or HTTP request
ScreenshotOne documents both a Node.js SDK and a simple HTTP request workflow for capturing a URL and saving the image. Its vendor page advertises 100 free screenshots per month; check the current offer and terms directly before relying on it. The vendor presents the service as a way to avoid local Puppeteer setup and browser management. See ScreenshotOne’s Node.js documentation.
Or skip the browser setup

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or the page looks incomplete
- Check whether navigation completed before capture. With a browser library, select a wait condition that suits the page, or wait for a specific selector before taking the shot.
- For a page whose content appears after scrolling or JavaScript execution, confirm that the target content has loaded. Puppeteer’s element screenshot flow scrolls an off-screen target into view, but a full-page capture may still depend on the page’s loading behavior.
- With a hosted API, inspect the response status and page-verdict or billing headers rather than treating every returned result as a successful clean capture.
An element screenshot fails or captures the wrong area
- Confirm the selector matches an element on the final rendered page, not just the initial document.
- Wait for the element to appear before capture. Browserless documents selector-based capture and wait controls; Puppeteer supports element-level screenshots through an element handle.
- Use a clipping rectangle only when you want a fixed page region; use an element or selector capture when the region should follow an element’s size and position.
A browser session hangs or consumes unnecessary resources
- Close the browser in a
finallyblock so errors during navigation or screenshot writing do not leave a session open. - Avoid an overly broad network-idle wait on pages that keep requests open. Prefer a meaningful selector or a suitable navigation condition when available.
- If browser installation or lifecycle management is the source of operational friction, compare a hosted REST endpoint with a remote-browser connection; the former trades browser-level control for a simpler URL-to-image request.
Output format or transparency is wrong
- Set the desired image type explicitly and ensure the file extension matches the response format.
- For Puppeteer, PNG does not use the screenshot quality setting. Transparent-background capture is available through
omitBackgroundwhere supported by the API. - For hosted services, check the provider’s documented formats and response handling before assuming a feature maps one-to-one to Puppeteer options.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
There are no independent benchmarks in the available documentation establishing which option captures fastest or most reliably. In a self-managed setup, your application is responsible for launching, connecting to and closing browser sessions. A hosted API or remote browser moves some of that operational work to a provider but adds a service dependency and makes current service limits and terms relevant.
