Create a visual website directory by storing each listing as a structured record, generating a consistent screenshot for it, and displaying that preview in an accessible, crawlable link card. A screenshot helps visitors recognize a site; it should complement—not replace—the destination link and listing details.
1. Decide what each directory entry contains
Keep each listing as a record rather than scattering site names, image paths, and URLs through page markup. A practical starting structure is:
- Destination URL: the canonical site address visitors should open.
- Name: the site’s display name.
- Description: a short explanation of what the site offers.
- Category and tags: values used for browsing or filtering.
- Preview image: the stored screenshot path or URL.
- Capture date and status: useful for deciding when to refresh an image and identifying failed captures.
This is an implementation choice, not a schema required by Playwright or Google. Decide how your directory treats redirects, duplicate domains, and sites that cannot be reached before generating previews. Keep the destination URL distinct from the screenshot URL: the card must still lead to the actual website.
2. Generate consistent website screenshots
Browser automation such as Playwright can open a destination and save a screenshot to a file. Its screenshot documentation covers image output and full-page capture; the Page API documents screenshot options including animation handling and masking.

Choose the capture shape
- Viewport screenshot: captures the visible browser area. This is usually the better default for directory cards because previews have a predictable, comparable shape.
- Full-page screenshot: captures the whole page, which is useful when the page’s complete layout is itself the point of the preview. It can make card thumbnails harder to read, so consider linking the image to a larger preview if you need to show detail.
Example capture with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser for your project using the official installation instructions. This Node.js example captures the viewport and writes a PNG file:

})();Replace the example URL and output filename with values from your listing record. The fixed viewport helps keep cards visually consistent. The example waits for network activity to settle, but some sites keep requests open or load content later; choose a wait condition suited to the site and capture the state you actually want to show. For a full-page image, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'example-com.png', fullPage: true }). Playwright also documents options such as animations and masks, which can help make repeated captures less variable.
Make capture repeatable
- Validate and normalize the destination URL before opening it.
- Navigate the browser and wait for a deliberate capture state, such as a relevant selector or an appropriate delay when the page requires it.
- Save using a predictable filename or object key tied to the listing record.
- Update the record with the image location, capture date, and success or error status.
- Refresh previews on a schedule that suits the directory, rather than assuming a stored screenshot stays current.
Website access and rendering vary. A navigation timeout, bot check, consent dialog, or site-specific behavior can make a capture incomplete or prevent it entirely. Record failures so they can be reviewed or retried instead of silently presenting a broken image.

3. Build accessible, responsive preview cards
Use an HTML <img> for a screenshot that conveys information about the listing. Google says it can discover images through an image element’s src; a CSS background is not the recommended discovery path for image indexing. See Google’s image guidance.

</article>Replace the sample URL, image paths, dimensions, and description with your actual values. Provide a concise alt description that identifies the preview’s purpose; do not stuff it with search terms. When an image sits inside a link, its alt text contributes to the link’s accessible name. Make the link’s purpose clear without causing a screen reader to announce the same information redundantly. Google’s link guidance discusses descriptive link text and alt text for linked images.
Balance image clarity and page weight
- Generate a thumbnail derivative for cards rather than making every visitor download a large original capture.
- Use
srcsetandsizes, or a<picture>element when you need different image sources, and keep a usable fallbacksrc. - Choose an image format and dimensions that keep text and recognizable site details legible at the rendered card size.
- Reserve a consistent aspect ratio for cards. A neutral placeholder while an image loads can reduce layout movement; this is implementation advice, not a requirement from Google.
- Store originals and derivatives in a way that fits your deployment, refresh process, and image-serving needs.
Google notes that images can contribute substantially to page size and recommends responsive image techniques and optimization. The right trade-off depends on how many previews appear, their dimensions, and the detail a visitor needs to recognize a site.

4. Keep directory listings reachable and discoverable
Use semantic markup and ordinary <a href="…"> links for both site destinations and directory navigation. A search box or client-side filter can make a large collection easier to use, but avoid making the only route to a listing depend on an interaction that a crawler cannot see.
Google’s developer guide describes crawlable links, individual URLs for content in JavaScript applications, semantic HTML, and sitemaps. A directory can expose its entries in rendered HTML and provide a sitemap where appropriate; neither guarantees indexing or search visibility.
Paginate large collections
For a long directory, split listings into stable pages or chunks with unique, persistent URLs. Link those pages sequentially so users and crawlers can reach later entries. If you implement infinite scrolling, make each chunk available at its own URL, keep its content consistent at that URL, and update the visible URL as users move through chunks. Google’s lazy-loading guidance covers these patterns and notes that Search does not interact with a page to trigger content that requires scrolling or clicking.

Lazy-load only previews that start below the fold
Lazy loading can reduce initial work for images farther down a directory page, but do not lazy-load previews likely to be visible immediately when the page opens. Ensure the image URL is available in the rendered src attribute and that an image loads when it becomes visible without requiring a user action. Google’s lazy-loading guidance was last updated on 2025-12-10.
5. Choose between your own browser automation and a managed capture service
Capturing in-house gives you direct control over the browser, viewport, capture state, and file workflow, but you also own browser installation and updates, infrastructure, retries, and failure handling. A managed screenshot API can reduce that operational work; assess providers against your actual workflow rather than assuming a service will work on every site.
- Capture control: Can you set viewport, full-page behavior, and the state to capture?
- Batching and recovery: How will you process many URLs, identify failures, and retry them?
- Output: Do the format, resolution, and resulting image size suit your cards?
- Operations: Compare the effort of maintaining browsers and capture infrastructure with the service’s integration and limits.
- Image delivery: Plan separately for responsive sizes, storage, cache refreshes, and the effect of previews on page weight.

6. Troubleshoot common directory problems
- The browser times out or never reaches the intended state: The site may be slow, keep network requests open, or load content after navigation. Use a suitable timeout and wait condition, or wait for a meaningful selector or delay rather than assuming every page behaves alike.
- A preview is blank or incomplete: Check whether the destination blocked automation, displayed a bot check, or requires a later render state. Store a failure status and retry or review the entry instead of treating the screenshot as valid.
- Cards look inconsistent: Standardize viewport dimensions and capture behavior. Decide deliberately whether cards use viewport or full-page captures.
- Text in previews is unreadable: Serve a larger derivative or adjust the card’s crop and display size. A full-page capture scaled into a small card may not be useful as a preview.
- Images slow the directory page: Create smaller card derivatives, use responsive image sources, and lazy-load only previews below the initial viewport.
- Some listings are hard to reach: Check that every card and pagination link is a real anchor, and that later chunks have stable URLs and sequential links rather than depending exclusively on a filter or scroll action.
- A screenshot no longer represents the site: Use the recorded capture date to identify stale previews and run your refresh workflow. Decide how the directory presents a failed refresh so an older image is not mistaken for a current capture.
