For a one-off Playwright screenshot, pass CSS text in page.screenshot({ style }). For a CSS file used by a Playwright Test visual assertion, pass its path as stylePath to expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). If the CSS needs to be installed on the page before capture, use page.addStyleTag().
Choose the right way to add CSS

The style option for page.screenshot() was added in Playwright 1.41. Check the Page API reference if you use an older version.
Apply inline CSS to a direct screenshot
Use the Page API when your script needs to save an image rather than compare it with a visual-test baseline. The following Node.js example launches Chromium, opens a page, hides a cookie banner, sets a predictable background and saves a full-page image:

await browser.close();Replace the example URL and selectors with the page and elements you need. The CSS must be valid CSS text. Use specific selectors where possible; a broad rule such as hiding every div can remove content you intended to capture.
Capture only the visible viewport
Omit fullPage or set it to false to capture the current viewport. Set fullPage: true when you need the full scrollable document.

Reduce animation-related differences
For captures that should not include motion, set animations: 'disabled' in the screenshot options. Playwright documents this option for disabling CSS animations, transitions and Web Animations during capture. See the Page API reference for the screenshot options.
Use a CSS file in a Playwright Test snapshot
If the goal is to compare a page against a stored visual baseline, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion and its stylePath option. This is not the same API as page.screenshot(): stylePath takes a file path and is used with the Playwright Test runner.

}The stylesheet can filter elements that change unpredictably between runs. The Playwright visual comparisons guide documents this pattern. A screenshot assertion captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last image with the expected snapshot; see the PageAssertions API reference.
Inject a stylesheet before a direct capture
Use page.addStyleTag() when the stylesheet should be added to the live page before the screenshot—for example, if you want the modified page state to apply to later interactions or captures.

Keep visual screenshots repeatable
Custom CSS can hide or normalize volatile page elements, but it cannot make different rendering environments identical. Playwright notes that screenshots may vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state and headless mode. Generate and compare visual baselines in a consistent environment, including the same browser and relevant settings, and use CSS to control page-level elements that vary by design.

- Hide or neutralize elements that change between runs, such as consent banners, timestamps or rotating content.
- Disable animations when movement affects the captured frame.
- Keep baseline creation and test execution environments consistent to reduce unrelated image differences.

Troubleshooting
style is rejected or has no effect
Confirm that your installed Playwright version supports the screenshot style option; it is available starting with Playwright 1.41. Pass CSS as a string to page.screenshot({ style: '...' }), not as a file path. If the stylesheet must be installed on the page, use page.addStyleTag().

stylePath is rejected
stylePath belongs to Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion, not the Page API’s page.screenshot(). Use the test runner and provide a valid path to the stylesheet.
The CSS file is not found
Check the resolved path from the test process’s working environment. In the example, path.join(__dirname, 'screenshot.css') expects the CSS file to be beside the test file. Update the path if your file is elsewhere.

Inspect the selector against the actual page DOM and check whether the rule is overridden. A targeted rule with !important, as in .cookie-banner { display: none !important; }, can help when page styles override your rule. For a direct capture, verify that the CSS string is passed in style; for a test assertion, verify that stylePath points to the stylesheet you edited.
Snapshots differ across machines
Rendering differences can result from the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power state or headless mode. Keep the baseline and comparison environments consistent before treating a mismatch as a page regression.

The direct screenshot does not match the visual-test workflow
page.screenshot() writes an image file and accepts CSS text through style. toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion that uses an expected snapshot and accepts a CSS file path through stylePath. Choose the route that matches whether you need a standalone image or a baseline comparison.
