For a Raspberry Pi playlist sent to YouTube Live, start with H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 3–8 Mbps for 720p30; choose a profile the Pi and your measured upload connection can sustain, then test it in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it. The playlist must also contain compatible files: FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is not a seamless fix for arbitrary clips.
Recommended YouTube settings for a Raspberry Pi
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 (it also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1), CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. RTMPS is the encrypted option where your FFmpeg build supports it. The bitrate figures below are YouTube guidance, not Raspberry Pi performance results; the page does not state a publication year.
| H.264 output | YouTube bitrate guidance | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Try this first if upload headroom or encoding capacity is uncertain. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Use only if the source has useful motion detail and the Pi sustains the workload. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | A reasonable target when the Pi and connection have been tested under load. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | Choose only after verifying sustained encoding and upload capacity. |
These are ranges, not guarantees. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions and leave headroom for variation rather than setting the encoder at the full measured rate. If capacity or CPU performance is uncertain, lower resolution or frame rate is a more defensible first test. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different playback formats.
Audio and picture basics
- Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps.
- Use progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR where your source and encoder support them.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and do not exceed four seconds.
- Use CBR for the live output. Ensure the combined video and audio rates fit within the connection’s reliable capacity.
Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for its current recommendations.

Build a compatible FFmpeg playlist
The concat demuxer reads a text file and processes media files sequentially. It adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases for this method. Different resolutions, frame rates, audio layouts, codecs, or timestamp behavior can prevent clean concatenation. Incorrect duration metadata can create timestamp artifacts or gaps; FFmpeg documents duration directives as a way to override stored duration values.
Create the concat list
- Put the intended media files in a stable order and record their paths.
- Create a plain-text file such as
playlist.txt. Each entry should use thefiledirective:file '/home/pi/videos/part1.mp4'
file '/home/pi/videos/part2.mp4' - Use absolute paths to avoid ambiguity about the working directory. If a path contains a single quote, escape it according to FFmpeg’s concat script syntax.
- Check the files’ streams, codecs, time bases, and durations before relying on stream copy. If they do not match, normalize or re-encode them to a common format first; do not assume that an arbitrary collection can be joined unchanged.
See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. It describes the demuxer as sequential and notes the matching-stream requirements and timestamp caveats. The master-branch documentation is rolling; check the documentation corresponding to your installed FFmpeg release.

Choose an encoder path that exists on your Pi
Do not infer encoding capacity from the board name alone. Raspberry Pi’s cited comparison uses software libx264 configurations for Pi 5 and includes a Pi 4 hardware-encoder configuration using h264_v4l2m2m. These are examples, not guarantees that every installation can sustain a particular resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. The published comparison surfaced as roughly five months old relative to October 3, 2026; the exact publication date and a full release/build compatibility matrix were not available.
- Check the installed encoders with
ffmpeg -encodersand confirm the exact encoder name is present. - Check your installed FFmpeg version with
ffmpeg -version. Hardware-encoder availability depends on the build and system support. - Test sustained encoding on the target Pi with the intended files and settings. A short launch test does not establish that the board will remain stable during a long stream.
Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance material provides context for the example paths, not a universal profile guarantee.

Send the playlist to YouTube Live
The following is a starting pattern, not a tested command for every Pi, FFmpeg build, or input. It uses the concat demuxer, H.264 software encoding, AAC audio, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Replace the placeholder with the correct YouTube ingest URL and a securely handled stream key. Confirm the encoder options are accepted by your installed FFmpeg.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /home/pi/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -minrate 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example’s -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 correspond to two seconds only at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, set the GOP/keyframe interval so it remains two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. The example’s 5000k video rate is a starting value within YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 range, not a recommended universal Raspberry Pi setting. Change it to match the chosen output profile and measured capacity. Add explicit scaling and frame-rate filters if your playlist sources vary and you have normalized them to a common target; test those filters for CPU load before going live.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a hardware encoder, substitute the encoder and its supported options only after confirming they exist in your installed build. Software encoder flags are not necessarily valid for h264_v4l2m2m. Do not copy a Pi-specific command found elsewhere without checking its assumptions about FFmpeg version, driver support, pixel format, and board.
Get the correct YouTube URL and protect the key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the scheduled/live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder configuration.
- If using RTMPS, specifically retrieve the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; the secure protocol is RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- Keep the real key out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories, and logs. Use a placeholder in examples. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room before streaming again.
YouTube’s help pages explain creating a live stream with an encoder, managing live stream settings, and encrypting a stream using RTMPS.

Test stream health before scheduling around it
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and motion representative of the real playlist, and monitor stream-health messages during the stream. A successful FFmpeg connection alone does not prove the output is stable or that viewers receive usable audio and video.
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test stream in Live Control Room.
- Play enough of the playlist to cross a file boundary. Confirm that video and audio continue, and watch for freezes, gaps, or timestamp errors.
- Monitor the Pi’s CPU load and network behavior for a sustained period, not just at startup.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health panel for bitrate, dropped frames, and warnings. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the Pi or upload connection cannot maintain the profile reliably.
- Verify the audience experience on a separate playback device. Confirm audio, image quality, and any desired DVR or latency behavior.
Latency and DVR are viewer-facing choices
YouTube’s live settings documentation notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. DVR lets viewers pause and resume, which can suit a playlist people may join partway through. Choose settings based on whether near-real-time interaction matters more than buffering tolerance and pause/rewind behavior.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects an encoder name or option | The installed build does not include that encoder, or an option belongs to a different encoder. | Run ffmpeg -encoders and review the installed encoder’s supported options; adapt the command to that build. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect server URL, stream key, protocol, or a key mismatch. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. For RTMPS, ensure the URL is the RTMPS one rather than the default RTMP URL. |
| Video drops, buffers, or reports poor health | Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, or the chosen output profile cannot be sustained. | Check stream health and real upload behavior; lower the bitrate, frame rate, or resolution and test again. |
| CPU load stays high or output stutters | Software encoding or scaling may be beyond the Pi’s sustained capacity. | Test a lower profile or verify whether a supported hardware path is available in the installed system. Do not assume a model label guarantees capacity. |
| Playback jumps, freezes, or has a gap at a file boundary | Concat inputs may differ in streams, codecs, time bases, or duration metadata. | Inspect and normalize the inputs, correct duration information where needed, then test transitions again. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | Playlist files may have inconsistent audio streams or timestamps, or output audio settings may not match the sources. | Check every input’s audio stream and duration; normalize to a common audio format and verify with a test stream. |
| The stream suddenly stops after a key was shared | The stream key may have been exposed or changed. | Reset the key in Live Control Room, update the protected configuration, and reconnect. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
A playlist being technically valid does not establish that you have the rights to stream its contents or that it complies with YouTube policies. Before going live, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other included material; review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and live-stream requirements. Repeated or minimally changed material may also raise monetization and reused-content questions; eligibility depends on YouTube’s policies and channel review, not on the encoder settings. Keep documentation of licenses and permissions where relevant.
