Set a screenshot to wait for the content the thumbnail needs, not just for a fixed number of seconds. When you know which heading, image, or other element must appear, wait for that element. If you do not have a reliable selector, use an appropriate page-readiness condition such as network idle. Add a short fixed delay only when the page still needs time to hydrate, animate, or settle after that condition.
Keep the navigation timeout separate: it limits how long navigation may take; it does not add time after the page is ready. The exact options, defaults, and limits vary by service.
Choose what the capture should wait for
A page’s load event does not guarantee that the specific content you want is visible. JavaScript-heavy pages and single-page applications may still be filling in content after the initial load. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation warns that default page-load behavior can return an empty or incomplete result on these pages. That makes the right readiness signal more important than simply increasing a delay.
Wait for a specific element when you can
If the thumbnail depends on a stable element—a page title, hero image, chart, or product card—wait for that element to appear before capture. A selector wait is tied to the content that matters, rather than to elapsed time. Cloudflare describes this as a targeted option that can be faster than waiting for all network activity to stop.

Choose an element that is present in the intended viewport and page state. A selector that changes between page versions, appears only after interaction, or is absent on mobile can cause the capture to wait until it times out.
Use network idle when no suitable selector exists
If you cannot identify a stable target, a network-idle condition can be a useful general readiness signal for pages that load visible content through requests. Cloudflare documents networkidle0 and networkidle2 as options for addressing early captures of JavaScript-rendered pages. Network idle is not proof that every visual transition has ended: animations, delayed UI, or client-side rendering may continue after network activity settles.

Cloudflare also documents load and domcontentloaded as navigation readiness values. Those can suit pages whose required content is already available at the corresponding event, but an event alone may be too early for a dynamic page.
Add a fixed delay only for a known settling step
A fixed delay adds elapsed time after a readiness event. Use it as a measured buffer when a page consistently needs additional time for hydration, a delayed interface, or an animation—not as a universal setting for every URL. A delay that is too short can still capture an incomplete state; one that is unnecessarily long increases capture latency.

Keep readiness, delay, and timeout settings distinct

These controls address different stages. A longer navigation timeout may allow a slow page to reach its readiness condition, but it does not tell the capture to wait after that condition. A fixed delay may add settling time, but it cannot make a missing selector appear or repair a failed navigation.

Set the capture timing step by step
- Identify the thumbnail’s required state. Decide exactly what must be visible: for example, the hero image, a heading, or a chart. If the page is interactive, include the needed interaction in the intended capture setup.
- Prefer a stable selector for that content. Configure the service to wait for the element if its selector is stable across the target viewport and page state. Check the service’s selector-wait syntax and timeout limits in its documentation.
- Otherwise choose a navigation readiness condition. Start with the least broad condition that reliably produces the needed content. For JavaScript-rendered pages, network idle may help; Cloudflare’s documented choices include
networkidle0andnetworkidle2. Confirm which values your own capture service accepts. - Add a small post-readiness delay only if needed. If captures reach the selector or readiness condition while the visible result is still settling, measure the remaining gap and add a buffer within the service’s documented range.
- Set navigation timeout for slow navigation separately. Allow enough time for the expected navigation, but do not treat this timeout as a rendering delay. Respect the product’s maximum; Cloudflare’s screenshot API reference lists a 60,000 ms maximum navigation timeout.
- Check the result at the actual capture conditions. Validate the selector and visible state at the intended viewport, user agent, and page state. Recheck after site changes or when the same URL produces inconsistent results.
How long should you wait before taking a screenshot?
There is no single reliable number for all websites. If you can wait for the target content, do that rather than guessing a duration. If you need a general readiness signal, test the available navigation conditions on the page. Use a fixed delay only for the time the page visibly needs after that condition. Service limits are configuration boundaries, not universal timing recommendations.
Troubleshoot blank, incomplete, or slow captures
The screenshot is blank or missing JavaScript-rendered content
- Likely cause: The capture proceeds on a load event that occurs before the page’s client-side content is rendered.
- Fix: Wait for a stable content selector, or try an appropriate network-idle readiness condition if the page loads its content through network requests. Confirm that the required content is present before capture.
The selector wait times out
- Likely cause: The selector is wrong, the element is absent in the selected viewport or page state, or the page never reached the state that creates it.
- Fix: Verify the selector against the actual page at the capture viewport and user agent. Check whether the element requires interaction or a different route. Extending the wait will not fix a selector for an element that never appears.
The page reaches network idle but the thumbnail still looks unfinished
- Likely cause: Network activity has settled, but a visual transition, animation, or hydration step continues.
- Fix: If possible, wait for an element or state that represents the finished visual result. Otherwise add a measured fixed delay after readiness and confirm the result.
Captures are consistently slow
- Likely cause: The chosen readiness condition waits on unrelated requests, or the fixed delay is longer than the page needs.
- Fix: Use a target selector when one reliably marks thumbnail readiness; Cloudflare positions selector waiting as a targeted alternative to waiting for all network activity to stop. Remove unnecessary delay and retest the resulting image.
The capture stops before a slow page is ready
- Likely cause: The navigation timeout is too short for the page’s navigation, or the page is stuck or failing to load.
- Fix: Check whether navigation succeeds, then adjust the navigation timeout within the service’s documented cap. Do not use a post-load delay to compensate for a navigation that never completes.
