For a directory thumbnail made in a browser you control, identify the banner’s actual element and hide that element with capture-time CSS. This cleans up the image; it does not accept cookies or record a consent choice. If the thumbnail must reflect a real choice, interact with the intended accept, reject, or settings control and verify the resulting state instead.
Choose whether to hide the banner or test consent
Decide what the thumbnail is meant to show before changing the page. A clean illustrative thumbnail can omit the banner visually. A consent-flow test should show the banner or exercise the intended control and verify the result. These are different tasks: CSS changes the rendered image, while interacting with a control may change the page and its stored preference.
- Clean visual thumbnail: hide the known banner in the capture context. Do not describe the resulting image as proof that consent was accepted.
- Real preference: use the intended accept, reject, or settings control, then check that the expected page and preference state resulted. A generic “accept” click is wrong when the target state is rejection or no choice.
- Consent-interface QA: leave the banner visible for a first-visit test, or test a specific consent path. Playwright’s page API documents handling unexpected overlays; use such a handler deliberately because it can alter the state under test. Playwright Page API
GDPR Article 7(3) says, “It shall be as easy to withdraw as to give consent.” That concerns withdrawal; it is not a reason to treat hiding the banner as a consent action. EUR-Lex, Regulation (EU) 2016/679
Hide a known banner with Playwright CSS
Use a narrow selector for the specific banner on the target site. There is no universal selector guaranteed to match every site, and a broad rule can conceal unrelated page content. Playwright’s page.screenshot() captures the rendered page; its Page API documents the screenshot method and overlay handling.
- Open a representative target URL in the same browser context and region used by your thumbnail job.
- Inspect the rendered page and identify the banner’s actual selector. Confirm it targets the consent panel, not a shared container or other content.
- Apply a capture-time rule such as
display: none !importantto that selector. Add the rule only in the screenshot context if the live page should remain unchanged. - Wait for the page and delayed consent interface to reach the relevant state, then inspect the output image to confirm the rule matched.
- Check for a leftover backdrop, scroll lock, layout shift, or content accidentally hidden by the selector. Validate across representative sites and consent platforms before applying a rule broadly.
Consent interfaces can appear after initial navigation, so a stylesheet injected too early or a selector that misses a late-loaded element may not produce the expected thumbnail. Verify the screenshot rather than assuming the page is ready because navigation completed.
Use a hosted capture service for many unrelated sites
When a directory captures many domains, maintaining selectors and browser automation can become an operational task of its own. Browserless documents a blockConsentModals=true option for screenshot endpoints and recommends custom-selector approaches for sites its built-in handling does not cover. Its examples include common consent-management patterns and click-based dismissal. This is a vendor feature, not universal coverage or a compliance guarantee. Browserless cookie consent documentation
For repeated capture, compare approaches by what they change, their coverage and selector controls, how you inspect failed captures, and whether your use case needs evidence of a real consent path. Use visual hiding only where a clean illustrative image is the goal.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its capture process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each step can be turned off. It bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

- The banner remains: check that the selector matches the live element and that the rule is applied after the consent interface appears. Inspect the generated image, not just the page before capture.
- A dark overlay remains: the backdrop may be a separate element from the dialog. Identify and target it only if hiding it is appropriate for an illustrative thumbnail.
- Page content disappears: narrow the selector; a class or container may be shared by content outside the banner.
- The layout looks broken or the page cannot scroll: inspect for layout changes or scroll-lock behavior left behind by the interface. Consider whether interacting with the proper control is more suitable than visual concealment.
- Results differ by site: consent tools and markup vary. Validate selectors per site or use a managed service’s supported handling with a custom fallback, and inspect exceptions rather than assuming universal coverage.
- The thumbnail is for a consent test: remove the hiding rule. Exercise the desired control and verify the resulting page and preference state instead.
