Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInvalid data found when processing input is an error clue, not a diagnosis. When relaying internet radio to YouTube with FFmpeg, first find out whether FFmpeg is rejecting the radio input, failing to decode it, or encountering a problem at YouTube output. Probe the station’s direct stream URL and inspect the surrounding log before changing audio codecs or bitrate.
What the FFmpeg invalid-data error means
FFmpeg documents AVERROR_INVALIDDATA as “Invalid data found when processing input.” The message identifies an invalid-data error code; it does not identify one cause. The input could be returning unexpected content, a format may not be recognized, or another input-processing step may have failed. The complete command and nearby log lines are needed to narrow it down.
For a radio relay, start with the station input. Keep it separate from the YouTube output: a bad server URL or stream key is an output-side problem, not proof that the radio URL contains invalid data.
Find which stage is failing
- Read the full command and nearby log lines. Identify the point of failure: opening the radio URL, decoding the incoming media, or opening or writing the YouTube output. Note the first warning before the error as well as the final message.
- Probe the radio URL on its own. Use the exact listening URL supplied by the station—not its homepage or a directory listing.
- Check the response and detected stream. If FFmpeg identifies an input format and audio stream, record those details. If it fails before identifying a format, investigate the endpoint, response, access requirements, redirect behavior, and protocol support.
- Test YouTube output separately. Once the input works, verify the current YouTube server URL, stream key, and selected RTMP or RTMPS protocol.
Probe the station’s direct stream endpoint
Run ffprobe against the station’s listening URL:
ffprobe -hide_banner -loglevel debug "RADIO_STREAM_URL"
Replace RADIO_STREAM_URL with the actual endpoint. This is an inspection step, not a guaranteed repair. Look for a detected input format and audio stream in the output. If probing fails before those appear, inspect the response status and content and verify the address with the station.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Verify the URL is a stream endpoint. A station website, player page, or directory listing may not be the audio stream itself.
- Determine whether you have a playlist file. Some station links return a playlist that points to another stream URL. Confirm what the server actually returns rather than assuming the playlist is audio.
- Check for non-audio responses. An HTML page, login screen, error document, or 404 response will not become audio when you change codec flags.
- Check access and redirects. The endpoint may redirect or require authentication. Establish what response FFmpeg receives before changing the output settings.
- Check protocol and format support in your FFmpeg build. Compare the endpoint’s scheme and detected format with the protocols and formats available in the installed build. FFmpeg documents multiple protocols, including HTTP-related handling and RTMP.
Do not add -f mp3 or force another format just to silence the error. First establish what data the endpoint returns. Forcing a format cannot repair a URL that returns a web page or an unavailable resource. Also, FFmpeg’s documented Icecast publishing options do not mean a station’s listening URL should be treated as an Icecast publishing URL.
Check YouTube only after the input works
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key entered into the encoder. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream in the Live Control Room, then copy the current connection details. YouTube Help says: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”

- Use the server URL and stream key shown for the current stream. Keep the key private, and do not share it in logs or screenshots.
- Match the selected ingest protocol to the YouTube settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers.
- Use an audio codec YouTube lists for encoder output: AAC or MP3. Its current settings page lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 Kbps as the stereo audio bitrate setting. These are YouTube output settings, not a requirement that the radio station’s source use the same bitrate.
FFmpeg’s general RTMP output uses FLV. Treat that as an output-format consideration, not a reason to force an input format on the radio URL. A server URL or key mismatch can prevent YouTube ingest even when the radio input probes correctly.
Account for the video side of a radio stream
A radio source supplies audio. A conventional YouTube live presentation may also need a visual component; YouTube’s encoder settings specify video codecs and parameters. The cited settings do not establish that every audio-only FFmpeg invocation will be accepted or rejected. If your workflow requires video, use a legitimate still image or visual loop as a separate video input. That addresses the presentation, not an invalid radio input.

Retest without changing several things at once
- Confirm that
ffproberecognizes the radio input and reports an audio stream. - With the current YouTube server URL, stream key, and matching protocol, make a short private or unlisted test.
- If the test fails, use the log to identify whether the error is at input or output, then change one relevant setting and test again.
- Keep a copy of the last working command so you can undo an unhelpful change.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | What to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
ffprobe cannot identify an input format or audio stream |
The address may point to a web page or playlist, the endpoint may be unavailable or access-restricted, or the build may lack relevant protocol support. | Inspect the response and debug log; confirm the direct listening URL and access requirements with the station. |
| The log reports invalid data while opening or reading the radio URL | The returned content may not be the expected audio data, but the error alone does not establish why. | Verify the response and endpoint before changing codecs or bitrate. |
| The radio input probes, but YouTube does not receive the stream | Check the YouTube server URL, private stream key, selected RTMP/RTMPS protocol, and supported output audio settings. | Retest the destination settings separately from input probing. |
| Audio works but the live presentation lacks video | The audio source does not provide a visual stream. | Check whether your YouTube encoder workflow needs a separate video input, such as a legitimate still image or visual loop. |
When a continuously running relay needs hosting
A VPS is an optional place to run FFmpeg continuously; it is not a fix for an invalid endpoint or unexpected response. If you choose that route, consider whether the host and network can keep the radio input and YouTube output reachable, how the process will be supervised, and how you will protect the stream key and any signed radio URL. No particular provider or VPS configuration is established here.

For a YouTube channel that needs an uploaded radio recording or playlist to loop continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; YouTube drops trigger automatic recovery. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a live radio URL relay or camera stream. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
