Selenium IDE records browser actions as test commands and can replay a selected test or suite. To get started, install the extension for a supported browser, create a project with your application’s base URL, record a workflow, save the project as a .side file, then use the play control to run it again. Treat the recording as a draft: inspect and refine its commands and targets before relying on it as a repeatable test.

What Selenium IDE records—and when to use it

Selenium IDE is a browser extension for low-code recording and playback. Selenium lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge as supported plugin browsers (Selenium IDE overview). It turns interactions in a browser window into Selenium commands that you can replay in the IDE. This makes it a practical way to capture a simple browser workflow and become familiar with Selenium syntax.

Recording captures a sequence of actions; it does not by itself establish that the sequence checks the outcome you care about or will remain reliable as the application changes. Review the generated commands and targets, and edit the test to express the intended behavior. For more control over browser automation in code, Selenium describes WebDriver as its language-neutral browser-control interface (Selenium WebDriver getting started).

Install Selenium IDE and create a project

  1. Install Selenium IDE from the extension store for a supported browser. The official overview lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge; the detailed getting-started guide gives Chrome and Firefox store instructions. Availability and store steps can change, so follow the current store listing for your browser (Selenium IDE overview, Getting started).
  2. Launch Selenium IDE from the browser’s extension controls.
  3. In its welcome dialog, choose the option to record a new test in a new project. Enter a project name and the base URL of the application you want to test. The base URL is a project setting and can be changed later.
  4. Let Selenium IDE open the application in a browser window. Perform the workflow you want to capture in that window.

Record a new test

  1. Interact with the application as a user would. Selenium IDE records the interactions as commands in the test.
  2. When the workflow is complete, return to the IDE and click its recording control to stop recording.
  3. Inspect the generated commands and targets. If a step did not capture the intended action or check, edit it or add a command manually. You can also add tests from the sidebar and enter commands directly rather than recording every step.
  4. Group related tests into suites if useful. A new project creates a Default Suite and places the first test in it.
  5. Save the project with the save icon. The getting-started guide describes the saved project as a single .side file, which you can reopen in Selenium IDE.

Replay a test or suite

  1. Select the test or suite you want to run.
  2. Click the play button above the test editor.
  3. Watch the browser window as playback proceeds, then review the commands and result if a step does not behave as expected.

Playback uses the browser window from recording if that window is still open; otherwise, Selenium IDE opens a new one. The detailed workflow is described in Selenium’s getting-started guide.

Choose between IDE playback and code-based execution

Path Best fit What to consider
Selenium IDE recording and playback Quick browser-level capture and a low-code introduction to Selenium commands. Playback runs in the IDE’s browser window. Review and refine recorded steps rather than assuming the recording is a maintainable test as-is.
Exported WebDriver code A code-based workflow when the current IDE supports the language and framework you need. The export guide documents C# NUnit, Java JUnit, JavaScript Mocha, and Python pytest, but it dates from 2019; confirm the current IDE export UI and release notes before choosing a target (Code export guide).
Command-line runner Running IDE tests beyond the direct playback workflow, including additional browser execution where currently supported. Selenium’s getting-started guide points to the runner for additional browsers. Check current runner and browser documentation for compatibility; the cited pages do not establish a current version-specific compatibility matrix (Getting started, Selenium downloads).

For code export, the official guide describes right-clicking a test or suite, choosing Export, selecting a target language, and exporting a file. Because that guide is dated, treat its language list as documentation of the guide—not a guarantee that every target remains available in your installed version. Selenium’s current downloads page links to releases and notes; its displayed release date for stable Selenium language components should not be read as a Selenium IDE version (Selenium downloads).

Troubleshoot recording and playback

  • The application did not open for recording: Confirm that you started a new recorded test and supplied the application’s base URL. Relaunch the recording workflow from the IDE.
  • Actions are missing or do not describe the intended check: Return to the IDE after recording, inspect the generated commands, and add or edit steps manually. Captured interaction alone may not encode the assertion or outcome you intended.
  • Playback does not use the original browser window: This is expected if the recording window has been closed; playback opens a new window in that case.
  • You need to execute tests in another browser: Use the command-line runner path documented by Selenium and verify the current runner and browser compatibility information rather than assuming a fixed browser matrix.
  • An export target is missing: The published export guide is dated 2019. Check the export choices in your installed IDE and its current release notes before planning around a specific language or framework.
