You can run OBS as a 24/7 YouTube radio station on Linux by keeping a supported Linux session, OBS, network connection and power available, then configuring and testing the encoder for your chosen stream quality. OBS can reconnect after some brief interruptions, but it cannot by itself protect a broadcast from a failed computer, network or power supply. Plan for monitoring and recovery—and do not rely on a single stream longer than 12 hours for a complete YouTube archive.
What a dependable 24/7 OBS setup requires
A continuous broadcast depends on more than OBS settings. The computer must sustain the intended encode, Linux must provide a supported graphics and display environment, and the connection and power must remain available. You also need a way to notice failures and respond to them. OBS’s system requirements call for OpenGL 3.3 and X11 or Wayland, and warn that meeting the minimum requirements does not necessarily mean a system can stream successfully. - A Linux computer capable of encoding your chosen video and audio settings continuously.
- A stable wired or wireless internet connection with enough upload capacity for the configured bitrate.
- Reliable power; a UPS may help with brief interruptions, but no particular model or capacity is established here.
- A legal source of music and other audio for both live transmission and any archive.
- Monitoring and an operator alert path for a stopped stream, failed host or connection loss.
Install OBS and build the radio scene
Install OBS Studio using a supported source for your Linux distribution. The available installation instructions vary by distribution, so use the applicable guidance rather than assuming one package command works everywhere. OBS Studio installation instructions
- Launch OBS in an X11 or Wayland session and confirm it opens without a graphics error.
- Create a scene for the station. Add the audio source or sources and any visual elements you want viewers to see. Keep the scene as simple as practical: complex scenes add encoding and rendering work.
- Check audio routing in OBS. Play the intended program material and watch the audio meters; confirm that the stream will receive the intended source, not merely audio audible on the Linux desktop.
- Open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if that option is available, or enter the YouTube server URL and stream key as appropriate. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in screenshots, logs or public documentation.
- Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then set and test the production configuration described below. The wizard is not a substitute for a sustained test.
Before scheduling a launch, check that the channel is verified and eligible to stream. For a scheduled broadcast, start the OBS encoder, verify that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the preview, and then select Go live. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow for the channel and event. Configure bitrate, video and audio settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. For its standard SDR encoder workflow, use H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Set the bitrate for the specific resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder settings give 2 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate and 6 Mbps as the maximum for 720p at 30 fps; those numbers are not a universal setting for other modes. The platform recommends AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio. Available options can depend on the Linux encoder and OBS configuration. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Choose a mode your computer and upload connection can sustain. A higher setting is not automatically better for a station if it causes dropped frames or stream-health warnings. Check YouTube’s current table rather than copying the 720p example to a different resolution or frame rate.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
Run a private or unlisted test using the same audio, motion, scenes, resolution and frame rate planned for the public station. OBS recommends testing before the first public stream; YouTube also advises monitoring quality and checking any local archive. YouTube live streaming tips

- Start the encoder and confirm the Live Control Room receives a preview.
- Listen to the received audio and check for silence, distortion, unexpected desktop sounds or channel imbalance.
- Watch the picture and stream health over a sustained period at the intended production settings.
- If recording locally, confirm the recording file appears and continues to grow.
- Test what happens when the network connection is interrupted and restored, and when the host restarts. Verify your alert path and that an operator can recover the broadcast.
Keep Linux and OBS running—and plan for failures
For unattended operation, use a Linux session that remains alive, prevent routine sleep or suspend, and arrange for OBS to start with the station session. Enable OBS’s automatic reconnect behavior for brief disconnects. Then add monitoring outside the streaming computer and a way to alert an operator. Test recovery from network loss and a host restart before relying on the station.

Automatic reconnect is not a complete recovery plan. It does not ensure that the computer will restart after a crash, that the network or power will return, or that OBS will recover from every failure. The OBS and YouTube guidance does not certify a particular systemd unit, watchdog, restart script or uptime target, so treat such automation as system-specific and test it rather than assuming it guarantees service.
Understand YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording if preserving the program matters. A single, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is therefore not a dependable source for a complete YouTube VOD. One option is to prioritize a continuous live destination and maintain a local archive. Another is to schedule shorter broadcast blocks, each ending before 12 hours, to create separate archive opportunities. YouTube’s guidance establishes the archive and DVR caveat, but does not prescribe a restart interval or guarantee how a specific channel’s segmented broadcasts will appear.

If it identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the operator; continued use may lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Troubleshoot common 24/7 broadcast problems
