Add a now-playing overlay by placing its webpage URL in an OBS Browser Source, layering that source above your gameplay, and checking the result in a recording or test stream. The crucial catch is that an overlay does not make a 24/7 broadcast reliably archivable: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need complete VODs, use shorter broadcast segments and keep local recordings.
Choose what “now playing” should show
First identify the information you want viewers to see. A song title, a game title, and a manually updated status label are different things, and the overlay needs a data source that can provide the specific information.
- Music track: A music overlay needs access to track metadata. For example, Now Playing documents a desktop app connected to DJ software; that documented setup is not universal detection of music from any system audio source. See Now Playing’s OBS setup guide.
- Game title or session status: Confirm that the chosen overlay can read or accept that information. Do not assume a music tool detects the game currently running.
- Manually controlled label: An OBS text source can work when you are willing to edit the wording yourself. It will not update automatically unless you provide a mechanism to change it.
For a hosted dynamic overlay, check whether its data source supports your exact player or metadata source, how updates are triggered, whether you can style and position it clear of the HUD, and whether you are comfortable relying on the provider and a private URL. The available setup guidance establishes the Browser Source method, but not universal compatibility or comparative reliability.

Add a hosted overlay in OBS
- Configure the overlay and copy its browser-source URL. Follow the provider’s setup instructions and confirm what data it can display. Keep account-specific URLs private. Now Playing’s dashboard guide documents its overlay controls and a simulated-track test.
- Open the scene that feeds your YouTube stream. In OBS, find the scene containing the gameplay and open the Sources list. Choose + → Browser, create the source, and paste the overlay URL. OBS describes Browser Source as a way to add a webpage to a scene, including for stream overlays. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Set the Browser Source dimensions. Use the overlay provider’s recommended width and height. Now Playing gives 1920×1080 as a standard 1080p example; if your canvas differs, match the actual canvas or the provider’s guidance for that layout. Its setup guide covers the dimensions.
- Layer and position it. Move the Browser Source above gameplay in the Sources stack so it appears on top. In the preview, position and resize it away from important HUD elements and action. Now Playing suggests a bottom position for gaming layouts; its customization guide describes positioning and styling.
- Test the composed output. Use the provider’s test control if available, then confirm the label and any artwork appear and update as expected. If the browser source looks stuck, refresh it; Now Playing’s dashboard guidance recommends refreshing when an overlay appears stuck. Make a local recording or a private/unlisted test stream to inspect the encoded output rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
- Replace a leaked URL. If the overlay URL is account-specific and exposed, reset it with the provider and update the Browser Source in OBS. Now Playing says resetting a leaked URL disables the old one immediately, so the OBS source must use the replacement.
Make the overlay visible in the VOD
OBS composites sources in the scene before sending the output to YouTube. A Browser Source placed above gameplay is therefore part of the streamed picture, not a separate label that YouTube adds afterward. If you also record locally from the same OBS output, check that recording too: the source must be present in the output you are recording.

Do a short test and watch the resulting recording or test broadcast. Confirm legibility at the size viewers will see, that the text is not hidden by the game HUD, and that updates occur when the underlying track or other data changes. A preview alone cannot confirm how a finished YouTube VOD will look.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but it does not guarantee that every such stream will be captured. It warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends a local archive backup. See YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance.

For a channel that needs continuous availability as well as dependable VODs, divide the broadcast into sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, end each session cleanly, and retain a local recording. Check each resulting archive and its overlay. This is a cautious workflow based on YouTube’s stated limitation, not a guarantee of archive capture.

Live DVR is a separate issue from the finished archive. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. When DVR is off, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast; that does not by itself determine whether a later recording will be available. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Music overlays do not grant music rights
A track title or artist credit in an overlay does not give you permission to broadcast the song. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights, and archived content remains subject to the applicable agreement. Check YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and use music you are authorized to broadcast.
