For a folder of videos you want to loop to YouTube Live from Docker, the closest documented match is simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder. Its README describes MP4 and MKV files mounted into the container, a YouTube stream key, and an option to loop indefinitely. It is a repository project with build-from-source instructions—not a verified prebuilt registry image—so check its current code, maintenance, and YouTube protocol compatibility before relying on it. For a custom FFmpeg pipeline, linuxserver/ffmpeg is a more general container, but it is not a turnkey folder-looping app.

Best ways to loop videos to YouTube Live

Option Best for What is documented Main trade-off
simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder Playing and looping files from a mounted folder Its README describes MP4 and MKV input, a /videos mount, a YouTube stream key, and LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true. Project README Build-from-source instructions are documented; a prebuilt registry image, present maintenance status, exact encoding settings, and current protocol compatibility are not established.
linuxserver/ffmpeg Custom FFmpeg commands and advanced control LinuxServer documents a general, ephemeral FFmpeg command-line image, x86-64 and arm64 support, and hardware-acceleration options. LinuxServer FFmpeg documentation You must construct and understand the FFmpeg command and Docker setup; the documentation does not present a turnkey folder-looping YouTube app.

1. StreamNeo: cloud-based alternative to running a Docker host

For a YouTube stream that should keep running without a computer at home, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo.

2. simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder: closest Docker fit

This repository describes the specific workflow in the title: mount a directory of MP4 or MKV files, supply a YouTube stream key, and enable indefinite looping. The README documents building the image from source. It does not establish a current prebuilt registry listing, ongoing maintenance, exact FFmpeg output settings, or successful operation against every current YouTube ingestion configuration. Verify these points in the repository before deployment.

3. linuxserver/ffmpeg: general-purpose building block

LinuxServer’s image is a general FFmpeg command-line container rather than an app that automatically scans a folder and loops its contents. Choose it if you want to author the pipeline yourself and can manage Docker, FFmpeg arguments, and the host’s encoding resources. Its documentation lists x86-64 and arm64 architectures and hardware-acceleration options, but does not provide a benchmark or a minimum host specification for a particular stream.

How to evaluate a Docker image before streaming

A repository’s description is not proof that its current implementation will work with your channel or run reliably for a long broadcast. Check the details that determine whether it fits your workflow:

  • Looping and input: Does it accept one file or a mounted directory? Does it play files sequentially, and is looping built in or something you must implement?
  • Build and maintenance: Is the image intended to be built locally or pulled from a registry? Inspect the Dockerfile, entrypoint, and recent project activity; the documented existence of source code does not guarantee ongoing maintenance.
  • Encoding and host capacity: Check whether it passes through or re-encodes media, which codecs, resolution, and frame rate it handles, and whether hardware acceleration is available for your architecture. No minimum CPU, GPU, or memory requirement for these candidates is established here.
  • Stream-key handling: Inspect how the key is passed to the container. Avoid committing it to a public Compose file, exposing it in logs, or leaving it in shell history.
  • Recovery and monitoring: Find out what happens after an FFmpeg error, a network interruption, or a YouTube disconnect. Confirm whether the container restarts, whether a supervisor retries, and how you will check stream health.
  • YouTube ingestion: Confirm the protocol selected in YouTube Live Control Room and that the container’s FFmpeg output matches it. Do not infer support for a protocol from a project’s general claim that it streams to YouTube.

Protocol and encoding settings to verify

RTMPS for a conventional live ingest

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for live ingestion. Check the current ingest details in Live Control Room, then compare them with the actual FFmpeg output and destination configured by the container. The repository descriptions alone do not establish that either image handles every current YouTube protocol or setting. YouTube encoder settings guidance

HLS is a separate workflow with additional constraints

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. It calls for 1–4-second MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges; encryption is supported only through HTTPS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These requirements make HLS a distinct configuration, not a drop-in assumption for a container described simply as streaming to YouTube. YouTube HLS ingestion guidance

Audio configuration

YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 audio sampling, and 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio bitrate. Treat these as YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not as proof that a particular Docker project sets them automatically. Check the command and test the resulting stream. Deployment and preflight checklist

  1. Inspect the project. For the folder-looping repository, review its current Dockerfile, entrypoint, environment-variable names, file discovery behavior, and build instructions. Do not assume documentation still matches the current code.
  2. Prepare the host and media. Install Docker on a supported host, mount the intended video directory at the path expected by the project, and verify that the container can read the files. Select compute based on the media’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether the workflow re-encodes; no minimum host specification is established for these images.
  3. Protect the key. Supply the stream key using a method appropriate to your deployment, and restrict access to configuration files and logs. The repository README shows the key passed as an environment variable; do not place secrets in a public Compose file or shell history.
  4. Match the ingest protocol. Check YouTube Live Control Room and ensure the container’s output endpoint and protocol agree with the selected ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS for normal use. If using HLS, verify every segment, playlist, transport, and HTTPS requirement against YouTube’s guidance.
  5. Test before a long broadcast. Use representative footage with motion and audio. Confirm that playback starts, files advance and loop as expected, and YouTube reports a healthy stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
  6. Plan for interruption. Observe how the container responds to a failed connection or process exit, and decide how you will detect and recover from a stopped stream. Do not count on automatic recovery unless the project implements it and you have verified its behavior.
  7. Confirm rights. Use videos and audio for which you have the necessary streaming rights. A container’s ability to transmit a file does not grant permission to broadcast it.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely checks
Container starts but no video reaches YouTube Check the stream key, ingest URL, selected protocol, network access, and FFmpeg output in the container logs; compare them with Live Control Room.
Files are skipped or playback ends instead of looping Confirm the mounted directory is readable at the expected path, that the files use supported formats, and that the current entrypoint recognizes the documented loop setting.
Stream connects but YouTube reports poor health Inspect output encoding and audio settings, host capacity, and network stability. Test with representative motion and sound; the cited image documentation does not establish a guaranteed bitrate or host performance.
Stream stops after an error or disconnect Check process and container restart behavior, logs, and whether the project retries the ingest connection. Add monitoring or a recovery mechanism only after verifying how it interacts with the container.
HLS output is rejected or delayed Verify segment duration and TS format, rolling-playlist size, HTTPS POST/PUT, absence of byte ranges, and HTTPS-only encryption. Account for HLS’s higher latency than RTMP.
