YouTube Studio is where a church creates, schedules, and monitors a live stream; an encoder sends the audio and video to YouTube. For a continuous sermon feed, set up the stream in Studio, connect the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and monitor it while it is live. One important limit: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to preserve sermons. Keep a separate local recording if replays matter.
Choose the right format for your church
Start by deciding whether the church needs one continuously running watch page or separate scheduled pages for services. A scheduled stream creates an upcoming watch page that can be shared, and viewers may be able to opt into reminders. A single ongoing feed avoids scheduling every restart, but it is less suited to giving each service its own event page and replay. This is a publishing choice, not a guarantee that one format will attract more viewers.
- Use a continuous feed when the goal is to keep one channel stream available around the clock and staff can monitor the encoder and connection.
- Schedule individual services when each service needs its own shareable page, reminder opportunity, metadata, or replay workflow.
- Plan replays separately if preserving sermons is important; a continuous live broadcast does not guarantee a complete archive.
Decide who will operate the encoder, manage Studio, and moderate chat. Give channel administration only to trusted people, and do not circulate the stream key or owner credentials among volunteers.

YouTube’s current help guidance requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Confirm eligibility before planning a launch; if the channel cannot go live, resolve that issue before configuring the encoder.

YouTube Help currently states that a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key up to three active streams. These are platform limits, not a recommendation to run that many broadcasts. A church using multiple services or encoders should count its active streams and keys against those limits.
Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- For an encoder-based continuous feed, use the Stream tab to create or configure the stream. To publish a scheduled service, use the Manage tab to schedule it.
- Enter an accurate title and description, and choose the intended visibility: Public, Unlisted, or Private. An embedded player on the church website does not make a public stream private; set visibility deliberately.
- Review the stream settings, including whether DVR is enabled. DVR lets viewers pause and resume or rewind while the stream is live; it is not the same as a saved replay.
- If reusing a previous stream, check its copied metadata, settings, and stream key rather than assuming they are still appropriate or secure.
Connect the encoder and check the preview
- In Live Control Room, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key. The key identifies the feed the encoder sends to YouTube, so treat it like a password.
- Enter the server URL and key in the church’s compatible encoder. Connect the camera and audio system to the encoder using the available hardware and connections. YouTube supports software encoding as well as professional-grade hardware encoders; a church does not necessarily need to buy a new encoder if its existing setup can send a suitable feed.
- Start the encoder, then wait for the incoming video and audio preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the picture, sound, and selected stream page are correct before the operator makes the stream live.
- Check that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. If scheduled, share the event page with the congregation in advance.
- During the service, keep a designated operator watching audio and video quality and the encoder’s connection. A live page alone does not confirm that the audio is intelligible or the picture is present.
Manage chat and access safely
If live chat is enabled, assign a trusted person to moderate it. YouTube Studio offers Basic or Strict moderation for potentially inappropriate messages, a blocked-words list, and slow mode to limit how often people can comment. A channel owner or managing moderator must change automatic moderation settings. Messages held for review remain hidden unless a moderator acts on them.

- Agree in advance who may approve held messages, hide abusive users, or limit or close chat.
- Use moderation settings that fit the service and the team’s ability to review messages in real time.
- Grant channel access only to trusted staff and moderators; do not share owner credentials or the stream key as a substitute for appropriate access.
Plan for archives: a 24/7 feed may not leave a replay
YouTube Help’s archive guidance, current as of 2026, says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Therefore, do not rely on a single 24/7 broadcast to create a complete sermon archive. If the church needs recordings, enable and verify a separate local recording workflow, and check that files are actually being saved.
DVR only lets viewers control their position during the live broadcast; it does not create a permanent replay. YouTube’s guidance also does not establish a guaranteed maximum continuous broadcast duration or promise uninterrupted service. In practice, continuity depends on the encoder, power, internet connection, operator monitoring, and YouTube availability.

Recover from common problems
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key are entered correctly, and the channel remains eligible for live streaming. Recheck the selected stream in Live Control Room.
- Preview appears but the wrong sound or picture is present: Verify the camera and audio connections into the encoder and confirm the correct sources before making the event live.
- The scheduled page is not the one you intended: In Live Control Room, confirm the selected scheduled event and review its title, description, and visibility before starting.
- A stream key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder. Do not continue using a key that may be compromised.
- A sermon replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream’s duration. YouTube warns that broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured; a local recording is the dependable separate safeguard.
- Chat messages are not appearing: Review moderation settings and held messages. Potentially inappropriate messages may remain hidden until a moderator reviews them.
