First check whether the Devanagari text is missing from the live page or only from the screenshot. If it is missing on the page, inspect the font Chrome actually renders and whether it has Devanagari glyphs. If the page looks correct but the image does not, wait for the page and its fonts to load, then try Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot. For automated captures, check that the capture includes content beyond the viewport.
1. Find out whether the page or the screenshot is at fault
Open the page in Chrome and check the same text that is missing from the image. If the live page also shows blank spaces or missing characters, start by diagnosing font availability and font selection. If the text renders correctly in Chrome but disappears from the screenshot, investigate when and how the capture is taken.
- Missing on the live page: inspect the rendered font and check whether it supports Devanagari.
- Present on the live page, missing in the image: allow content and fonts to load, then retry using a full-page capture method. If you use automation, check its viewport and beyond-viewport settings.
These are diagnostic branches, not a guaranteed diagnosis: the right cause depends on the page, operating system, Chrome build and capture method.
2. Inspect the font Chrome is using
Use Chrome DevTools to inspect the text element’s computed style and rendered fonts. Confirm the font family Chrome actually uses, rather than relying only on the font name in the page’s CSS. Then check that the selected font contains the Devanagari characters in question. A declared web font may not be the font ultimately used to render a glyph.

Test pages that use local font sources
If the site’s @font-face rule includes a local() source, DevTools can help you compare local-font behavior with the hosted font. Open the DevTools Rendering panel, enable Disable local fonts, and reload the page. If the text changes, that is useful evidence that local font selection affects the result. This is a diagnostic test for pages using local font sources, not a universal fix for missing text.
3. Consider the operating system and Chrome build
Font fallback can vary by platform and installation. A Chromium source change committed on March 4, 2026 says that Chromium previously had no configured default fonts for Devanagari, leaving fallback to generic system font resolution. The change records these platform mappings:

| Windows | Nirmala UI | Nirmala UI | Consolas |
| macOS | ITF Devanagari (sans-serif); Devanagari MT (standard) | Devanagari MT | Menlo |
| Linux | Noto Sans Devanagari | Noto Serif Devanagari | Noto Sans Mono |
| ChromeOS | Noto Sans Devanagari | Noto Serif Devanagari | Noto Sans Mono |
These are mappings in that Chromium change, not proof that a particular computer has those fonts installed or that an older Chrome version, custom build or Linux distribution uses the same defaults. If the page itself is rendering incorrectly, compare the actual rendered font, the operating system and Chrome build before assuming a capture bug. Read the Chromium change and its platform mappings.
4. Take a true full-page screenshot in Chrome
Use DevTools for a manual capture
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the device toolbar, then open its More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Check the resulting image, including text farther down the page.
Chrome distinguishes Capture a full size screenshot from Capture screenshot, which captures the current viewport. If you used the viewport command, it may not include the page’s full content. Let the page and fonts finish loading before capturing; dynamic content may also need time to appear.

Check the capture mode when automating
Do not assume that a screenshot command automatically captures an arbitrarily long page. Chrome’s headless documentation describes the --screenshot command for creating an image file and notes that full-page capture involves additional steps. With protocol-driven capture, inspect the settings passed to Page.captureScreenshot: the protocol reference says captureBeyondViewport defaults to false. Check the automation tool’s viewport and full-page options and confirm that the capture includes the area where the missing text appears.
DevTools documents the full-size screenshot command; the DevTools Protocol reference documents the beyond-viewport setting. Neither setting, by itself, establishes why a particular page’s Devanagari text is missing.

5. Narrow down what differs between the page and image
Change one diagnostic variable at a time so the result tells you something:
- If the live page is wrong: compare the rendered font, operating system and Chrome build, and check whether a web font or local font is selected.
- If only the image is wrong: compare the manual DevTools capture with your automated method, check viewport versus beyond-viewport capture, and wait for fonts and dynamic content before retrying.
- If only some text is affected: inspect the specific element and glyph coverage in its rendered font rather than treating all page text as one case.
The available controls help isolate the problem; no single setting is established as a universal fix across all pages and environments.

6. Troubleshooting common outcomes
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Devanagari is missing in both the page and screenshot | Inspect the element’s rendered font and verify that it supports the missing glyphs. Check the operating system and Chrome build because fallback behavior can differ. |
| The page is correct, but the screenshot is missing text | Wait for page content and fonts to load, then recapture. Check whether the tool captures the full page or only the viewport. |
| The top of the page is captured, but lower content is absent | Use DevTools’ full-size command for a manual capture. For protocol automation, inspect whether beyond-viewport capture is enabled. |
| Disabling local fonts changes the text | Investigate the page’s @font-face rule and local source. The difference is diagnostic; it does not establish that every affected page should disable local fonts. |
| The basic headless screenshot is not full-page | Follow the full-page steps for your capture setup rather than assuming --screenshot alone covers an arbitrarily long page. |
