For a monitor-free setup, Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite; set up networking and remote access during imaging so you can manage the Pi over SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. Raspberry Pi headless setup documentation
1. Prepare the Raspberry Pi for unattended captures
A scheduled capture needs a Pi that stays powered, has network access when the job runs, and has enough storage for the images you keep. You do not need a monitor for this workflow: Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite for headless devices and describes configuring network access and remote access in Raspberry Pi Imager. See the headless setup instructions.
Connect to the Pi remotely, for example over SSH, and choose an output directory with room for the screenshot history. Before scheduling anything, confirm that the Pi can reach the target website and that you can run your capture script manually.
Headless capture versus a graphical kiosk
A headless Pi is suited to a periodic image archive. A kiosk is a different setup: it launches a browser in a full-screen display for someone to view. Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial describes Chromium launching from the desktop and says its graphical browser setup requires Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB RAM. That is not a stated minimum for a headless Playwright script, and the tutorial is not a scheduled screenshot recipe. Raspberry Pi kiosk mode tutorial

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Create a browser script that saves the screenshot
Playwright’s Page API supports navigating to a URL and saving a screenshot to a chosen path. The example below is the core capture operation in JavaScript; it assumes you have installed a compatible Playwright package and browser for your particular Raspberry Pi OS release and architecture. The available documentation cited here does not establish one tested installation command for every Pi configuration, so verify package and browser installation on your image before relying on it.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: '/home/pi/screenshots/site.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Save the script to a known location and replace the example URL and output path. Use an absolute path so a scheduled run does not depend on the scheduler’s working directory. Make sure the account that runs the script can write to the output directory.
This example captures the visible viewport. To include the page’s scrollable content, set the screenshot option fullPage: true. A full-page image can be much taller than a viewport capture. Playwright documents PNG as the default output format and also supports JPEG and WebP; select a format with the type option when appropriate. The Page API also documents output path and scale options. Playwright Page API screenshot options

Wait for the page you actually need
A successful navigation does not guarantee that every site-specific element is ready. Pages may load images or update content asynchronously, and there is no universal wait duration that works for every site. Choose a readiness condition that makes sense for the target page, such as waiting for a known element, then test repeated manual captures to see whether the expected content appears. Avoid assuming an arbitrary fixed delay will always solve incomplete captures.
3. Schedule the script on the Pi
Once a manual run works, configure the operating-system scheduler to launch the script at your chosen interval. Scheduler syntax and environment details depend on the Raspberry Pi OS release and the scheduler you use. The official setup material cited here does not provide a current, version-specific cron recipe or a complete tested scheduler command sequence, so validate the exact configuration on your own OS image rather than copying an unverified schedule.
When you configure a recurring job, use the full paths to the runtime, script, and output directory. Set a deliberate working directory if the script expects one, and arrange for output or errors to be logged so you can tell whether a capture ran. Test the scheduled invocation itself—not just the script in an interactive shell—before treating the workflow as unattended.

4. Choose the capture dimensions and format
| Choice | What it captures or does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The visible browser area at the selected viewport size. | Use for a consistent snapshot of the part of the page a visitor initially sees. |
| Full page | The scrollable page, including content beyond the viewport. | Use when the archive needs the whole page; expect a potentially very tall image. |
| PNG | Playwright’s documented default screenshot format. | Use when you want the default output behavior. |
| JPEG or WebP | Alternative screenshot formats supported by the Page API. | Choose based on your downstream use, and measure storage on your own pages rather than assuming a particular file-size reduction. |
5. Keep scheduled captures useful over time
- Keep the Pi powered and connected to the network during scheduled runs.
- Decide how many captures to retain and monitor available storage; an image archive grows with each successful run.
- For visual comparisons, keep the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless mode as consistent as you can.
- Record the browser or runtime version alongside important archives. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright visual comparisons documentation
- Expect the website itself to change between runs: dynamic content can differ even when your capture setup stays the same.
6. Troubleshoot common failures
The script works manually but not on schedule
The scheduled process may run with a different working directory, environment, or user than your interactive session. Configure absolute paths, verify the scheduled account’s permissions, and inspect the log or error output from a scheduled invocation.
The image is missing or cannot be written
Check that the destination directory exists and that the account running the script has write permission. Use an absolute output path and confirm the filesystem has room for new captures.
The screenshot is blank or missing page content
Check network access and whether the page has finished loading the content you expect. If content appears asynchronously, wait for a suitable page-specific condition and repeat manual captures to validate it; no single delay is reliable for every site.

The image changes between runs
Some changes may come from the site’s own content, while others may come from differences in the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power, or headless mode. Keep the capture environment stable and record runtime details if comparing images matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I schedule website screenshots without a monitor on my Raspberry Pi?
Yes. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is Raspberry Pi’s recommended option for a headless device; configure networking and remote access during imaging, then run your capture script through the operating-system scheduler.
Does the Raspberry Pi kiosk hardware minimum apply to headless screenshots?
No. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB RAM statement is for the graphical browser setup in its kiosk tutorial; it does not establish a minimum for headless Playwright captures.
Will a scheduled screenshot always look identical?
No. The site may change, and Playwright notes that rendering may also vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.
