For the documented manual workflow, OBS must send the video feed at airtime; after the preview appears, click Go live in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s auto-start option can remove that final click once video reaches the scheduled broadcast, but a separate computer-side launcher is still needed to start OBS at a chosen time.
What scheduling does—and does not do
YouTube Studio creates a scheduled broadcast that viewers can find ahead of time and set reminders for. OBS supplies the encoder feed: it plays the video or playlist and sends that feed to YouTube. Scheduling the broadcast does not start the OBS application or make a local video loop by itself.
For a fully unattended start, two things must happen: a computer or service has to launch the encoder, and YouTube must be configured to accept the incoming feed as a live broadcast. The steps below cover the OBS loop and YouTube schedule; automatic computer-side launching depends on a separate operating-system task or other launcher.
Set up a video or playlist to loop in OBS
Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the YouTube stream.
- In the Sources box, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the local video file you want to play.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties, then confirm. OBS repeats the file when playback completes.
Loop several videos with VLC Video
- Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the Sources box, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the video files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback repeats after the playlist finishes.
Use Media Source for a single repeating file and VLC Video when the loop should cycle through multiple files. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.

Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open Manage, then select Schedule Stream.
- Choose to reuse settings or create a new stream, then set the broadcast details and schedule.
- Keep the scheduled stream’s details available for the encoder connection. YouTube’s scheduling workflow lets viewers see the upcoming broadcast and set reminders.
These steps schedule the YouTube event; they do not configure a clock-based OBS launch. YouTube’s current procedure is described in its scheduled live stream instructions.
Connect OBS and bring the scheduled stream live
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is available as a service, or enter the server URL and stream key supplied for the scheduled broadcast.
- Protect the stream key: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel’s broadcast. Do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
- At airtime, start streaming from OBS. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream process is to wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and then click Go live.
- Confirm that the YouTube broadcast is live and that the picture and audio are correct. An OBS status indicating that it is sending data does not, by itself, mean the scheduled broadcast has been made live to viewers.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. For a scheduled broadcast, the official procedure includes the Live Control Room confirmation step.

Can YouTube go live automatically when OBS starts?
Yes, if auto-start is enabled for the scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s API defines it as starting the broadcast automatically when video begins arriving on the bound live stream. In that configuration, OBS can send the feed without the usual final Go live click. The setting changes YouTube’s response to an incoming feed; it does not launch OBS at the scheduled time.
YouTube’s API describes the behavior of enableAutoStart; YouTube’s standard help workflow still describes starting the encoder, waiting for preview, and clicking Go live. If you need an unattended launch, verify the auto-start setting for the broadcast and arrange a separate OBS launcher on the computer. The API documentation was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC: YouTube Live Streaming API: liveBroadcasts.

What must be automated on the computer?
A task scheduler or another computer-side launcher has to start OBS and its stream at the desired time. The exact setup depends on the operating system, OBS configuration, whether the computer is logged in, and how it handles restarts; the YouTube schedule does not provide those functions. If OBS does not start or the computer is asleep or offline, the scheduled broadcast will not receive an encoder feed.
For unattended use, test the whole sequence before relying on it: launcher starts OBS, the correct scene and looping source are active, OBS connects to the intended stream, and YouTube’s chosen auto-start behavior works as expected. Keep in mind that a local-computer method depends on that computer and its network remaining available.

Ending the stream and keeping the archive
Stopping OBS ends the outgoing encoder feed, while ending the YouTube broadcast is a related but separately controlled action. YouTube’s API describes auto-stop as occurring around one minute after the owner stops sending video. If auto-stop is disabled, the OBS guide says a scheduled broadcast can be ended through Live Control Room; if you end it there, stop OBS as well.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee for every configuration or future policy. See the YouTube live-stream help page and Live Streaming API documentation.

Common problems and fixes
- The scheduled event exists, but OBS is not streaming. Scheduling does not launch the encoder. Start OBS manually or configure and test a separate computer-side launcher.
- OBS sends video, but viewers do not see the broadcast live. For the documented workflow, open Live Control Room, wait for the preview, and select Go live. If you expect YouTube to start automatically, check whether auto-start is enabled for that broadcast.
- The video stops instead of repeating. Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, verify that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- VLC Video is missing or cannot play the playlist. Install VLC; match its architecture to OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The wrong stream receives the feed. Check the selected YouTube service/account and confirm the server URL and stream key belong to the intended scheduled broadcast. Replace a key if it has been exposed.
- The stream remains open after OBS stops. Check YouTube’s auto-stop behavior. If auto-stop is disabled, end the broadcast in Live Control Room and stop OBS.
