You can run a YouTube radio-style livestream by using OBS Studio to loop prerecorded audio while a still image supplies the video, then connecting OBS to a stream you create in YouTube Studio. For a true 24/7 broadcast, the computer and internet connection running OBS must remain available; YouTube’s setup documentation does not guarantee that one uninterrupted stream will stay live indefinitely.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16.
- A computer that can run OBS continuously, a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity, and the image and audio files you plan to broadcast.
- Permission to use both the image and every audio track in a worldwide livestream, and in any replay you want to keep.
Plan the broadcast length before you configure it. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived as a complete replay. If a complete replay matters, consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions and confirm the current behavior in YouTube Studio.
Choose a looping audio setup
One audio file
Use an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option when you want one recording to repeat continuously. This is the simpler setup, but the same file will repeat until you stop or change the source.
A playlist of audio files
For a sequence of tracks, add an OBS VLC Video source, select the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source. A playlist gives you more varied programming, but you need to maintain its files and order.

In either case, add your static image as an image source in the same OBS scene. Arrange the sources so the image is visible in the scene while the audio source plays. A still picture removes motion from the visual layer, not the need to send a valid video stream.
Set up the YouTube livestream in OBS
- Build the scene in OBS. Create a scene, add the still image as an image source, then add either a looping Media Source or a VLC Video playlist source for the audio. Confirm the intended image is visible and audio is playing before connecting.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it publicly.
- Use a compatible encoder output. YouTube’s error guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. A static image still needs to be sent as video; it does not make an audio-only encoder configuration sufficient.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm the image, sound and stream health indicator in Live Control Room. Test with audio and motion comparable to the planned broadcast, and keep monitoring the stream while it is live.
The available guidance here does not specify a recommended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe interval for this particular format. Use a valid OBS configuration compatible with YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than assuming that a still image permits zero video bitrate.
Make the stream more reliable
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the stream bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS, so measure the actual connection and account for competing use.
- Prefer a dependable connection. A wired Ethernet connection is an option if your computer and router support it. It does not increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service, so check your actual upload performance first.
- Keep the playback chain running. A 24/7 local setup depends on the computer staying powered and stable, OBS remaining active, the audio source continuing to play, and the network sustaining the upload.
- Check stream health during the broadcast. Preview and monitoring can reveal ingestion or connection problems, but a successful test does not guarantee an uninterrupted all-day or multi-day stream.
Clear music and image rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the rights needed to use the live content on Google services worldwide, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers and other rights participants. A track being available for personal listening, described as royalty-free, or licensed for another platform does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube livestream. Check that the license covers the broadcast territories and any archived replay; check the image rights as well.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its copyright guidance says a stream can be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted or terminated if third-party content remains. Even when you have a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Resolve that with the rights holder before relying on the track for a continuous broadcast.
Monetization and replay expectations
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible livestream revenue features, subject to eligibility and settings. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. The existence of livestream monetization features does not establish that a repetitive 24/7 stream using prerecorded audio and a static image will qualify under current channel monetization policies, so do not budget on monetization without checking the applicable policies for your channel and format.
For archives, YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule covers streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a single broadcast longer than that will produce a complete replay; split sessions if the archive is important and verify current Studio behavior before depending on it.

Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that OBS has the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key, and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced. Confirm the stream was created in Live Control Room and that OBS is sending H.264 video and AAC audio.

The audio stops or the playlist ends
For a single file, verify Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For multiple files, verify Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source and that VLC is installed. Check that the selected files remain available to the computer running OBS.
The stream health indicator shows a problem
Check the connection’s available upload bandwidth against the stream bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use and check whether the computer or encoder is still operating normally.

The livestream is interrupted over copyrighted content
Stop using the disputed content until you have confirmed that the rights cover YouTube livestreaming and the relevant territories. If the track is licensed, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
The replay is missing or incomplete
Check the broadcast duration and the archive in YouTube Studio. The stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not establish a complete archive for a longer uninterrupted event.
