直播? does not identify a specific YouTube Live error or a known FFmpeg message, so it is not enough to diagnose the cause. Compare the complete FFmpeg error output with the timestamped message beside the stream health indicator in YouTube Live Control Room. The timing of the failure—before connection, during startup, or after the stream has run—also narrows down what to check.
If you share logs for help, remove the stream key first. Anyone who has it may be able to use your stream.
Start with the exact error and when it occurs
- Capture the full FFmpeg output. Keep the lines around the first error, not just the final line, and note whether the failure occurs before FFmpeg connects, while YouTube is starting the stream, or after a period of successful streaming.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream’s health indicator and read any timestamped messages. Compare their times with the FFmpeg output; one can identify a YouTube-side stream condition that is not obvious from the local encoder log.
- Keep sensitive details private. Redact the stream key before posting a command, log, or screenshot. If you use an API-based workflow, the LiveStreams API also exposes stream status and health-status configuration issues for diagnostics: Google for Developers: LiveStreams.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends monitoring stream health and checking encoder errors, CPU load, how the stream looks and sounds in the encoder, and any local recording or archive. These checks help distinguish an encoder, source, or configuration problem from a connection problem. See YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
If FFmpeg cannot connect or the stream will not start
Verify the stream key and encoder connection
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream key for the stream you intend to run, then check that FFmpeg is using that key and the correct YouTube ingest destination. If you changed or replaced the key, update the encoder configuration. Never publish the key in a command example or troubleshooting post.

If you start the stream through a software integration that logs in to YouTube rather than using a stream key, YouTube advises contacting the software provider when the encoder fails to start; compatibility may require an update. Follow YouTube’s third-party encoder setup instructions.
Use the dashboard message to choose the next check
A startup or authentication failure points first to the key, destination, or software integration. A message about stream format or unsupported audio/video settings points to the encoder’s output configuration. If the stream starts but later loses health, inspect the encoder output, system load, source, and network before changing unrelated encoding settings.

Check FFmpeg’s output against YouTube’s ingestion settings
Do not change every setting at once. Match the encoder output to the protocol and stream configuration you are using, and make a targeted change only when a YouTube health message or your command shows a mismatch. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these requirements and recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion:
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: a two-second interval is recommended and the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you have selected. For example, its H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 60 fps lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain either rate.

When you inspect your FFmpeg command, check that the chosen video codec, audio codec, frame rate, bitrate behavior, and keyframe interval agree with the selected YouTube ingest protocol. If the error indicates an unsupported format, correct the specific mismatch rather than lowering quality or changing protocols without a reason.
Rule out upload capacity and connection instability
A correctly configured encoder can still lose the stream if outbound upload is too slow or unstable. Test the upload connection used by the streaming computer, then compare its sustained capacity with the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% room above stream demand in its network guidance; this is headroom, not a promise that a connection with a particular speed will remain stable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Check whether the upload rate holds steady during a test, rather than relying only on a brief peak speed result.
- Account for any additional outbound traffic, including a backup stream if you configured one.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, a wired connection can help isolate Wi-Fi as a variable. It is a troubleshooting test, not a guaranteed cure for every dropped stream.
- Watch the Live Control Room health indicator while testing. YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.
See YouTube’s streaming tips for network guidance. If the encoder output and CPU load look healthy but the dashboard reports connection trouble, focus on the outbound network before changing codecs or keyframes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, or DASH only when the setup supports it
YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS when using a compatible RTMP workflow. It also documents HLS and DASH ingestion, but these are distinct protocol choices, not universal fixes for an RTMP error. Their supported codecs and latency behavior differ; HLS and DASH can accept codecs that RTMP/RTMPS do not, while segment-based ingestion generally adds latency.

Before switching, confirm that the chosen protocol matches the ingest destination, stream configuration, and encoder support. A protocol change without a matching stream key and encoder setup can create another configuration error. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes supported ingestion options.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube Live failure patterns
| What you observe | What to check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg fails before connecting | Stream key, ingest destination, and whether the key was changed | Retrieve the intended key in Live Control Room, update the encoder, and keep the key out of shared logs. |
| The encoder connects, but YouTube reports a format or settings problem | Codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate behavior | Compare the output with the selected protocol’s YouTube settings and change only the setting implicated by the warning. |
| The stream starts, then becomes unhealthy or drops | Timestamped health messages, encoder errors, CPU load, source, and sustained upload stability | Use the dashboard and local output to decide whether the issue is encoding, source, or network-related; test upload capacity with headroom. |
| FFmpeg appears healthy, but YouTube reports a connection issue | Outbound network reliability and available upload capacity | Test the actual connection used for streaming; try wired networking to isolate Wi-Fi if applicable. |
| Changing protocols produces a new error | Whether the destination, stream configuration, codec, and encoder support the new protocol | Restore a matched configuration or make the protocol change deliberately using YouTube’s protocol-specific guidance. |
