If OBS is using too much CPU while looping a video to YouTube, first identify the selected encoder and the source of the load. Then reduce the work that matches the bottleneck: try a compatible hardware encoder instead of x264, lower output resolution or frame rate, and simplify the loop scene. There is no universal setting that fits every computer, because OBS’s requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
Diagnose the bottleneck before changing settings
A loop may look simple but still demand resources from video encoding, scene rendering, browser sources, filters, and other applications. OBS says CPU requirements vary considerably with the chosen encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. The exact cause cannot be determined without knowing your machine and seeing its OBS performance indicators or logs. OBS Project’s system requirements explain why a single CPU setting is not right for every setup.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and check the streaming encoder selected for your stream.
- Note the output resolution and frame rate, then consider whether the scene contains browser sources, filters, animated overlays, or media files larger than needed.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and test it before relying on the setup for a live session. This makes it easier to tell which change helped.
Choose an encoder that fits your system
If OBS is using x264
x264 is a software encoder, so it uses the CPU to encode video. If your system offers a compatible hardware encoder, selecting it can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. The available options and their quality depend on the hardware and platform; do not assume your computer has NVIDIA NVENC or another particular encoder. Check the encoder list in Settings → Output first. OBS explains the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide.
If you stay with x264
OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide lists the x264 CPU Usage Preset veryfast as a baseline for advanced recording settings. Treat that as an encoder-specific starting point, not a universal YouTube Live recommendation or a guarantee that a particular stream will run smoothly. Preset changes can affect image quality, so test the output and watch OBS’s performance indicators before using it live.

Reduce resolution or frame rate when encoding cannot keep up
Lowering the stream’s output resolution or frame rate reduces work. The trade-off is less detail at a lower resolution and less fluid motion at a lower frame rate. If you are trying to sustain 60 fps and cannot, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. This can be a reasonable compromise for a mostly static music, talk, or ambience loop, while motion-heavy footage may make the difference more noticeable. See the OBS Studio overview.
Change the stream’s output (scaled) resolution before changing the base canvas. Lowering the base canvas can require you to resize and reposition sources in the scene, making it a more disruptive adjustment. If you do lower it, inspect the layout afterward so that text, video, and overlays still fit.

Simplify the loop scene
Keep only the sources the loop needs. Some sources may continue using resources even when hidden, so hiding an item is not always enough to remove its cost. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses source and scene demands as part of performance troubleshooting.
- Remove unused sources rather than merely hiding them.
- Reduce or remove expensive filters and effects that do not materially improve the stream.
- Resize browser sources to the dimensions they actually need in the scene. If browser content is static, consider replacing it with an image source.
- Use media files sized appropriately for their displayed dimensions instead of unnecessarily large assets.
- Temporarily disable complex animated overlays as a diagnostic. If performance improves, simplify or remove the overlay.
When another app or the GPU is the problem
CPU encoding and GPU overload are different issues, even though either can disrupt a stream. If you are gaming or doing other GPU-heavy work at the same time, OBS suggests capping the game’s frame rate or reducing its graphics settings to free GPU resources. On Windows, OBS also suggests trying to run OBS as administrator when the GPU is overloaded. These GPU-focused steps are not guaranteed CPU fixes; first check whether the encoder or GPU is actually under pressure.

Test before depending on the stream
After adjusting settings, run a short recording or stream and watch OBS’s performance indicators for signs that the change helped. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing before going live. A brief check can reveal issues with encoding, motion quality, or scene layout before you depend on the loop for a longer broadcast.
