OBS’s automatic reconnect setting handles a dropped connection while OBS is running; it is not a process restart mechanism. YouTube’s auto-start setting can start a broadcast when encoder content arrives, but YouTube does not guarantee that a full OBS restart will preserve the same broadcast, watch page, archive, or viewer continuity.
What needs to happen after OBS restarts
There are two different failures to plan for. If OBS remains open but loses its connection to YouTube, OBS can attempt to reconnect. If OBS exits or the computer reboots, something outside OBS must launch the application again. To make that new OBS session start streaming without a manual click, launch OBS with --startstreaming.
- Connection interruption: OBS’s automatic reconnect setting is intended for a temporary connection loss.
- OBS process exits: Use an operating-system startup mechanism or process supervisor to launch OBS again.
- Streaming after relaunch: Include
--startstreamingin the launch configuration.
These layers help restore the encoder feed, but do not by themselves guarantee uninterrupted playback or continuity of the same YouTube event.
Prepare YouTube and OBS
Check the stream destination and key
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the intended stream. Verify the server URL and stream key configured in OBS match that stream. YouTube uses the key to identify where the encoder sends video and to accept the feed. A reusable or custom key can be useful for repeated sessions, but treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it and replace the saved key in OBS. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

Choose YouTube auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls determine whether encoder start and stop signals also start or end the broadcast. With auto-start enabled, encoder content can start the broadcast without a separate Go Live action. Auto-stop may end the broadcast when encoder content stops, which may not fit a plan to reconnect to the same event after an interruption. YouTube describes these options by saying, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” Test the chosen behavior in a private or unlisted broadcast; the settings do not establish that the same event or watch page will persist through a full OBS restart. Enable OBS automatic reconnect for network interruptions
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and review Automatically Reconnect. This is for a connection interruption while OBS is running. It does not relaunch OBS after the program closes. The OBS overview explains the reconnect feature at OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Set OBS to launch and start streaming again
Configure an external relaunch mechanism
Set up your operating system’s startup or scheduled-launch feature, or a process supervisor, to start OBS after the computer boots or OBS exits. OBS’s launch documentation explains how to use launch parameters in shortcuts and automated launching; OBS itself is not a watchdog that restarts a closed process. Exact setup depends on your operating system and supervisor, so verify that the mechanism launches the intended OBS installation and profile on your machine.
Add the automatic-start parameter
Include --startstreaming in the OBS launch command or shortcut. OBS Project documents this parameter as “Automatically start streaming.” It tells OBS to begin streaming as the application launches; the external mechanism is still responsible for launching OBS in the first place. Consult OBS Project’s Launch Parameters for the parameter and launch guidance.

Check the loop source and the loaded setup
After a test relaunch, confirm OBS has the expected stream destination, key, scene, and loop video source. The OBS Quick Start Guide documents video as a supported source type, but it does not establish how every source’s playback state behaves after a process restart. Verify that your particular loop source starts and repeats as intended rather than assuming its state will persist.
Test recovery before relying on it
- Use a private or unlisted test broadcast. Avoid first testing a restart on a public stream.
- Start the loop and check the preview. Confirm the expected picture and sound reach YouTube before testing recovery.
- Watch from a separate device. This lets you check the viewer-facing stream and watch page while OBS is unavailable.
- Exit OBS and allow your relaunch mechanism to run. Confirm OBS opens with the intended setup and starts streaming if
--startstreamingis configured. - Check the result in both places. Verify the loop resumes in OBS and inspect whether YouTube keeps the broadcast and watch URL behavior you need.
- Repeat after a computer reboot if relevant. A successful application restart does not prove that startup after a full system reboot is configured correctly.
YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, checking stream preview and accessibility, and monitoring audio and video. Its guidance is at YouTube live streaming tips.

What to expect from the YouTube event and archive
A restarted encoder does not establish whether YouTube will retain the same broadcast object, public watch page, archive, or viewer continuity. Those outcomes are not guaranteed by the cited OBS launch and reconnect guidance or YouTube’s stream-setting descriptions; test the exact setup and decide whether its behavior is acceptable.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That policy is not a promise that an archive or event will behave as one continuous recording after an OBS process restart. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot a loop that does not resume
OBS does not reopen
The relaunch mechanism may not be configured for application exit, may point to the wrong OBS executable, or may depend on a login or startup condition that did not occur. Check its launch history or logs, then run the configured launch manually to confirm it opens OBS.
OBS opens but does not start streaming
Check that the launch configuration includes the exact --startstreaming parameter and that OBS has the intended stream destination and key. If YouTube auto-start is part of the design, check that setting in the selected stream and test the combined behavior again.
OBS reconnects poorly or drops frames
If OBS remains open and the problem is the network rather than a closed process, check the connection and bitrate separately. OBS lists an unstable network path, bitrate limits, VPN or security software, and faulty network hardware among possible causes. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers checks and remedies. Automatic reconnect cannot compensate for a persistently unusable connection.
The stream is back, but the video is not looping
Inspect the media source and confirm the intended file is available and its playback/loop behavior is configured as needed. Then repeat the private-stream restart test while monitoring the picture and sound. The available OBS Quick Start documentation confirms video sources are supported, but does not specify restart persistence for every media-source configuration: OBS Quick Start Guide.
