To run an always-on playlist on YouTube, a playback source or encoder must play the videos continuously, and the encoder must send that feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The key connects the feed to your YouTube stream; it does not create a playlist, make videos loop, or restart a source that stops.

What the stream key does—and what it does not do

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The encoder uses the stream URL and key to send its audio and video feed to the selected YouTube stream. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains how keys are managed.

The playlist and its continuity are separate. Your encoder or playback application must supply the videos, loop them, and handle a source interruption if it can. YouTube’s setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder; they do not prescribe an always-on playlist player or its restart settings. Verify those functions in the software or device you choose.

Check channel eligibility and choose a setup

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. YouTube also lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. Requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility page before scheduling a broadcast.

ZowieBox, 4K HDMI NDI Video Encoder/Decoder, HDMI NDI
  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
  • Software encoder: A computer runs the encoder and playlist source. This can be a flexible way to test a setup, but the computer, software, and network must remain available for the broadcast.
  • Hardware encoder: A dedicated device may suit a higher-production setup, but it is not required for every creator. Check that it supports the ingestion protocol you intend to use and can play or receive a continuously looping playlist; YouTube does not certify a particular device here as an unattended playlist solution.

Before relying on either option, test looping and recovery after closing the playlist source, restarting the encoder, and briefly interrupting the network. A successful connection test does not establish that the full playlist arrangement will run unattended.

Connect an encoder to Live Control Room

  1. Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube may reuse previous settings and keys, so confirm the selected stream before copying its connection details. The interface may change; follow the labels currently shown in Studio. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key. In the stream settings, copy both values. A YouTube preset in your encoder may fill in the server URL; otherwise, enter the Stream URL and Stream key in the matching fields in the encoder’s streaming settings.
  3. Select a supported protocol. Use the protocol configured for the stream and supported by your encoder. YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS ingestion. RTMPS is encrypted RTMP over TLS/SSL. For HLS, select an HLS stream key and use the HTTPS ingestion URL; YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Check YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance for the current workflow.
  4. Set up the playlist in the playback system. Configure the encoder’s input or connected playback application to play the desired videos continuously. Set looping and any restart behavior in that application or device—not in the stream key. Test the arrangement locally, then test it with an unlisted or private stream before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.
  5. Start the encoder and check the preview. Start sending the feed and confirm that Live Control Room receives it. For a scheduled stream, use the Go live control when you are ready; for an immediate stream, follow the workflow Studio presents. Check the watch page as a viewer, then monitor stream health, picture, and sound. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends previewing and monitoring the stream. See YouTube’s live encoder tips.

Do not include the stream key in screenshots, public tutorials, or shared configuration files. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the old value in the encoder before sending the feed again. YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers key management.

Choose RTMPS or HLS and allow bandwidth headroom

For most setups, protocol choice is a compatibility decision: choose an option supported by both the encoder and the stream configuration. YouTube documents RTMPS and HLS; HLS uses an HTTPS ingestion URL and an HLS key, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency than RTMP. Do not assume that a key and URL for one protocol will work in an encoder configured for another. YouTube’s HLS documentation provides the protocol-specific details.

YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. Treat that as headroom, not as a guarantee: other devices and users on a shared network can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. Test while the network is under typical load, and monitor the stream for dropped frames or health warnings. YouTube’s encoder tips discuss connection testing and monitoring.

Plan monitoring, recovery, and recordings

  • Test the whole chain: Check the playlist source, encoder output, Live Control Room preview, and public watch page. Confirm that the audio and video remain correct across a loop.
  • Test interruptions: If your encoder has a backup or failover option, test it before depending on it. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder where one is used, but it does not define playlist restart behavior for third-party software.
  • Monitor the broadcast: Check stream health and audio/video quality during the run. A visible preview at startup does not prove that the source will continue indefinitely.
  • Make a separate archive plan: YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement for a complete archive of a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer. If a full recording matters, make and test a local or other independent recording plan. YouTube’s encoder guide describes its archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common connection and playlist problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No preview in Live Control Room The encoder has not started sending, or the URL, key, or protocol does not match the selected stream. Confirm the selected stream in Studio, recheck the Stream URL and key, verify the encoder’s protocol setting, then restart its output and watch for the preview.
The preview works, but the watch page is not live The stream may be scheduled and awaiting the Live Control Room go-live action. Check the stream’s status and use the current Go live control when ready. Confirm the watch page as a viewer.
The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly Looping or restart behavior is controlled by the playback application or encoder, not by YouTube’s key. Test the playlist locally, inspect its loop and failure settings, and run a private or unlisted stream before relying on it unattended.
Video or audio quality becomes unstable The network may not have enough available upload capacity, particularly if bandwidth is shared. Test the connection under typical load, keep the 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends, and monitor stream health and audio/video output.
The encoder can no longer connect after a key reset It may still be using the old key. Copy the current key from Live Control Room and replace the saved value in the encoder.
A long broadcast has no complete archive YouTube’s cited automatic archive statement covers streams shorter than 12 hours, not a guarantee for longer sessions. For future broadcasts, test a separate recording method and verify that the resulting file is complete.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

A stream key does not grant rights to the videos in a playlist. Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the necessary rights to every video, music track, and other element. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and channel policies for the material and format you plan to stream; this article does not establish that a particular playlist is permitted or eligible for monetization. Keep a record of permissions and use a private or unlisted test to catch technical issues before a public broadcast.
