Put it immediately before the video file’s -i option. If FFmpeg keeps running but YouTube’s live preview stalls, the problem may instead be pacing, a separate audio input, encoding settings, or the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. Without the command and logs, no single cause can be diagnosed.
Check whether FFmpeg exited or YouTube stopped receiving usable media
First distinguish a process failure from a delivery problem. If FFmpeg has exited, inspect its exit status and final error line. If it is still running but YouTube’s preview or live indicator has stalled, check the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room and the stability of the connection.
That distinction narrows the search: an exited process points toward the input, options, mappings, or an FFmpeg error; a running process with stalled playback calls for checking output flow and YouTube’s ingest status.
Put the loop option before the input it should repeat
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. The -stream_loop option applies to the input file that follows it; -stream_loop -1 means loop that input indefinitely. Place it before the corresponding -i:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
If the option appears before another input, it loops that input instead. If it appears after the target -i, it does not configure that earlier input. See the FFmpeg documentation for option scope and loop behavior.
Check every input, including separate audio
Looping the video does not automatically establish that a separate audio file repeats too. If your command uses multiple inputs, inspect each input’s duration, its own input options, and the stream mappings. Also look for duration or “shortest output” options that may end output when one input finishes.

A 2022 post in the FFmpeg-user archive describes a user’s setup involving looping video, a separate MP3 input, CPU load, and loss of YouTube’s live indicator. It illustrates why multi-input setups are worth checking; one report does not establish a general audio or CPU defect.
Pace prerecorded video like a live input
A file can be read faster than real time unless you pace it. FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1); it can be useful when output packet flow needs to match live delivery. Put it before the prerecorded input’s -i:

-re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
Do not blindly apply -re to an actual live capture input. Check the FFmpeg documentation for the installed build’s supported options and their exact behavior.
Use a command shape that keeps input and output options clear
This illustrates option order for one local prerecorded video. It is not a complete, tested command: choose mappings, encoders, bitrate, keyframe interval, and the ingest URL based on your media and YouTube’s selected stream settings.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [mapping and encoding options] -f flv "RTMP(S) ingest URL/STREAM_KEY"
Use the ingest URL supplied by YouTube and keep the stream key private. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the flags you use; builds and commands can differ.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream health
A correct loop command does not guarantee successful delivery. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

| YouTube H.264 setting | Published bitrate guidance |

| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps recommended |
These are figures on YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026; they are recommendations, not guarantees. The page lists AAC or MP3 audio. Check its current table for the applicable codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination before changing bitrate.
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Read the guidance on the YouTube Help page and watch Live Control Room for ingest warnings.

| What you see | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits when the video ends | Whether -stream_loop -1 is before the intended video input’s -i |
Move the option directly before that input and review FFmpeg’s final error and exit status. |
| Video repeats, but audio ends or changes unexpectedly | Separate audio input duration, loop options, stream mappings, and duration or shortest-output options | Confirm that each intended input continues for the whole output. |
| FFmpeg runs, but YouTube’s preview or live indicator stalls | Live Control Room stream-health messages, connection stability, and whether media is paced | Check ingest status and consider -re for prerecorded input. |
| YouTube reports encoder or stream warnings | Codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, keyframe interval, and the matching bitrate row | Align the output with YouTube’s current guidance and available upload capacity. |
For a specific diagnosis, the useful evidence is the full command, FFmpeg’s final log lines and exit status, the list and duration of every input, and YouTube’s stream-health status. A symptom alone cannot identify which failure occurred.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a prerecorded video that keeps a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
