To keep an OBS-based YouTube Live loop running after a Windows update, prepare for two separate failures: OBS losing its connection while it is open, and Windows restarting and closing OBS. Turn on OBS Automatic Reconnect for connection drops, then configure OBS to launch and start streaming after Windows starts. These settings are a recovery plan, not a guarantee: sign-in requirements, network availability, encoder errors, or YouTube event settings can still stop the loop.
Understand the two kinds of interruption

The exact Windows startup method depends on your edition and sign-in setup. OBS documents the launch parameter and the required working directory for automated launches; it does not provide a universal unattended sign-in configuration.
Prepare YouTube and OBS before the update
1. Record the working loop setup
- Note which encoder you use, which OBS scene or source supplies the loop, and whether the YouTube event is scheduled or intended to remain open.
- Keep your stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” because they tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
2. Check the encoder connection and event settings
In the encoder, confirm that the stream URL and current stream key are set correctly. In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream settings for auto-start and auto-stop. When settings are copied or reused, those choices can carry forward, so confirm them for the event you will restart. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and key to be entered in the encoder; see YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
3. Enable OBS Automatic Reconnect
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find Automatic Reconnect. Configure it for your connection-drop scenario. This can help when OBS stays open but loses its connection; it does not restart OBS after Windows closes it. The setting is also identified in the OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Configure OBS to start streaming after Windows starts
1. Choose how Windows will launch OBS
Use a Windows startup mechanism that suits your PC and sign-in configuration. The available guidance does not establish one best method for every Windows edition or account setup. If you use a scheduled task or another automated launch, account for whether Windows must be signed in and whether your network is available at that point.
2. Add OBS’s launch parameter
Launch OBS with --startstreaming so it starts the stream when OBS opens. OBS lists this as a launch parameter in OBS Project: Launch Parameters (published May 30, 2021).

3. Set the working directory for an automated launch
For a scheduled task or other automated launch, set its Start in working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. OBS explicitly calls out this requirement for automated launches in its Launch Parameters documentation. The launch parameter and working directory do not configure unattended Windows sign-in or guarantee the network is ready.
Test the complete recovery path
- Use an unlisted or private test stream if that suits your channel and test purpose.
- Start the loop normally and verify that OBS is sending the encoder feed and YouTube Live Control Room shows the preview.
- Perform a controlled Windows restart while you are available to observe what happens.
- Check each stage: Windows starts and signs in as expected; OBS opens; the loop source is playing; OBS begins sending; and the YouTube control room receives the feed.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and confirm the event behaves as intended with its auto-start and auto-stop choices. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream health; see YouTube Help: Stream health and troubleshooting.
Do not rely on the setup until you have tested the actual restart path. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is not a substitute for confirming that the live feed resumed.

Troubleshoot by the stage that failed
OBS did not open after Windows restarted
- Check the Windows startup mechanism, task configuration, and sign-in conditions.
- For a scheduled or automated launch, confirm the Start in directory points to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Verify that the startup mechanism passes
--startstreamingto OBS.
OBS opened, but YouTube received no feed
- Check OBS’s streaming status and any encoder error before changing unrelated Windows settings.
- Confirm the network is available and the OBS scene or source supplying the loop is playing.
- Verify the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder, then check the Live Control Room and event settings.
YouTube reports an encoder start error
Get the current stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and update the third-party encoder’s settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for encoder start errors is in YouTube Help: Stream health and troubleshooting.
The connection drops while OBS is still open
Check OBS Automatic Reconnect in Settings > Advanced, then check network availability and YouTube stream health. Reconnect addresses a connection interruption while OBS is running; it cannot relaunch OBS after a full Windows restart.

The loop does not resume despite a successful launch
Check that the intended scene or source is still active and playing, OBS actually began streaming, and the YouTube event settings permit the expected start behavior. A successful OBS launch alone does not confirm that YouTube has a feed.
