For livestreaming, your upload speed matters most: it must carry your stream’s bitrate with room left for other network use and normal fluctuations. There is no single minimum that works for every platform and video setting. Choose the bitrate for your platform, measure your upload under realistic conditions, and test the stream before going live.
Start with upload speed, not the number in your internet plan
A livestream sends video from your computer or encoder to a platform, so the relevant connection capacity is upload. The plan’s advertised download speed describes receiving data; it does not tell you how much upload capacity you have. Check the upload result from a speed test rather than assuming it matches the advertised download figure.
Viewers have the opposite need: they download the stream. A viewer’s download recommendation is not a broadcaster’s upload requirement.
Choose a bitrate for your platform and video settings
Bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second. The recommended rate varies with platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 ingestion bitrates:

For AV1 and H.265, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60, 10 Mbps at 1080p30, 12 Mbps at 1080p60, 15 Mbps at 1440p30, 24 Mbps at 1440p60, 30 Mbps at 4K30, and 35 Mbps at 4K60. These are platform ingestion recommendations for the named settings, not broadband-plan requirements. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.
Use the current encoder guidance for the service you are streaming to; settings from one platform should not automatically be applied to another. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably support, running an upload speed test, testing before the event, and monitoring stream health.

Allow upload headroom above the bitrate
Your measured upload should be higher than the encoder’s bitrate target. Twitch’s FAQ gives a general rule of bitrate plus 30% and illustrates it with a 6 Mbps stream that may need at least 8 Mbps upload. Treat that as Twitch’s general guidance, not a guarantee of stability: other devices using upload bandwidth reduce what remains for the stream. See Twitch’s How Do I Stream FAQ.
For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. A connection that measures exactly 17 Mbps upload leaves no extra capacity for other traffic or variation, so it is a poor basis for assuming the stream will be reliable. If the available upload is tight, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a setting your connection can sustain.

Measure and test the connection you will actually use
- Set the intended output. In your encoder, select the destination platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use that platform’s current recommendations as your starting point.
- Measure upload in realistic conditions. Run a speed test on the same internet connection you plan to stream from. Consider whether other people or devices will be uploading during the broadcast.
- Compare capacity with the bitrate. Make sure measured upload has headroom above the stream bitrate. A result from one moment is not a guarantee that upload will remain steady throughout a live event.
- Run a test stream before the event. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators while using the intended settings. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Adjust if the test is unstable. Reduce the stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then test again. Do not rely on a single speed-test result as proof the connection will hold.
Broadcaster upload and viewer download are different
Twitch separately lists viewer download guidance of 3–6 Mbps or higher for watching 720p60 and 7–12 Mbps or higher for 1080p60. Those figures concern playback, not the upload speed a broadcaster needs to send a stream. See Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines for its published guidance.
Common speed-related stream problems
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: the selected bitrate may be too close to available upload, or other devices may be using upload capacity. Lower the bitrate or output settings and test again.
- A speed test looks fast, but the live test is unreliable: a test measures the connection at a moment in time. Repeat the test under realistic conditions and monitor the actual stream’s health before relying on it.
- The viewer experiences buffering: the viewer’s download capacity and playback conditions matter. Broadcaster upload recommendations and viewer download guidance answer different questions. Twitch offers playback issue troubleshooting for viewers.
- You are unsure which number to follow: use the destination platform’s current bitrate recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check whether your sustained upload can support it with headroom.
