A video API is a software interface that lets an application control video-related resources or use a managed service to process and deliver video. For live streaming, a typical managed workflow sends an encoder’s source feed to a cloud ingest endpoint, processes and packages it, then makes it available to compatible players. A video API is not itself a streaming protocol, a camera, or an encoder.
What a video API does—and what it is not
“Video API” describes a category, not one standard feature set. One API might let software create and manage live events and stream resources. Another might accept a live feed, transcode it, package it into playback formats, and connect it to delivery infrastructure. Some products cover several of those jobs; others focus on one.
An API is the software interface an application uses to request actions or manage resources. RTMP, SRT, HLS, and DASH are protocols or media formats used to move or play video; they are not APIs. An encoder is the program or device that sends a source feed. These parts can work together, but they are not interchangeable.
How a managed live-streaming API works
- Create or configure the live resource. An application can use a platform API to set up an event and associate it with a stream. In YouTube’s model, a broadcast is the event viewers watch, while a stream represents the audio and video sent to YouTube.
- Send the source feed to ingest. An encoder sends video and audio to the service’s input endpoint. For Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, documented input endpoints use RTMP or SRT; ffmpeg is one example of an encoder program.
- Process and package the feed. A managed service may transcode the incoming signal into output renditions and package it for playback. Google Cloud documents HLS and MPEG-DASH outputs, with fMP4 and MPEG-TS segment options for its Live Stream API.
- Deliver it to viewers. A compatible player retrieves the output stream. HLS, for example, is designed to adapt playback to available network speed. A service may provide its own player or let viewers use another compatible player.
- Manage related operations. Depending on the product, APIs may also expose event scheduling, stream state, backup inputs, encryption, storage integration, or conversion of a live event into video on demand (VOD). These are product-specific options, not features every video API includes.
Ingest protocols and playback formats are different choices
Ingest is the path from the encoder to the service. Playback or delivery is the format a player receives. A service can accept one set of inputs and produce a different set of outputs, so check both sides of the workflow rather than assuming one protocol covers the entire stream.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Technology or service | What the documentation describes | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | SRT and RTMP input; HLS and DASH output. | These are documented options for this Google Cloud service, not a universal video API specification. |
| YouTube live ingestion | RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion options. | Confirm current support for the specific channel and workflow before configuring a production encoder. |
| Apple HLS | Live and on-demand delivery designed to adapt playback to available wired or wireless network speed. | Playback behavior depends on the available renditions and the player’s network conditions. |
| Cloudflare Stream | Live inputs can be created in the dashboard or through its API; playback is available through its player or a player supporting HLS or DASH. | Player and workflow choices depend on the implementation. |
Latency and protocol trade-offs
YouTube’s protocol comparison says segment-based HLS and DASH ingestion typically have more latency than RTMP. The same comparison describes encrypted ingestion for RTMPS, HLS, and DASH, and codec capabilities for HLS and DASH that are not available to RTMP or RTMPS in that documented comparison. Choose based on the platform’s supported configuration, the codecs you need, and how much latency your use case can tolerate; do not assume every channel or service offers identical modes.
YouTube HLS ingest has specific media requirements
YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance describes playlists that order media segments. Its stated requirements include muxed M2TS media, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP. The documentation recommends media segments of one to four seconds for this YouTube HLS ingest workflow. These requirements and segment guidance should not be generalized to all HLS delivery or ingest systems.

Examples of video APIs and live services
- Google Cloud Live Stream API: a managed service for transcoding live linear video into delivery formats. Its documented capabilities include SRT/RTMP input, HLS/DASH output, Cloud Storage integration, and optional functions such as backup input, live-to-VOD, and encryption.
- YouTube Live Streaming API: manages YouTube live events and their associated stream resources. It is an example of event and platform control, rather than a general-purpose cloud transcoding service.
- Cloudflare Stream: supports creating a live input through its dashboard or API, with playback through its player or an HLS/DASH-compatible player.
- Vimeo Live: its API documentation describes retrieving an HLS playback URL for an event to use in an external player. Vimeo also describes adaptive bitrate playback, which changes stream quality in response to network conditions.
How to evaluate a video API for your workflow
Start with the job the API must perform. If you need to schedule a YouTube event, platform event controls may matter more than transcoding. If you need to ingest one feed and deliver several playback formats, managed processing and packaging are central. If the goal is continuous playback of uploaded videos on a YouTube channel, that is a different workflow from sending a live camera or encoder feed.
- Latency: Decide whether ordinary live viewing is sufficient or whether low-latency or interactive behavior is essential. Actual latency depends on provider, protocol mode, and configuration.
- Input and output compatibility: Check supported ingest protocols, codecs, packaging formats, captions, and target devices separately.
- Resilience: Determine whether backup input or redundancy is available, and how failover is configured. Google documents a backup input option for its Live Stream API.
- Security and access: Check transport encryption, content encryption, and which users or applications can operate media resources. Google documents content encryption and IAM-based access control for its service; YouTube documents encrypted RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion.
- Workflow integration: Confirm whether storage, CDN delivery, event management, recording, or live-to-VOD fits your architecture. Google documents Cloud Storage integration and live-to-VOD for its service.
- Operations and cost: Verify current configuration limits, quotas, service regions, support arrangements, and pricing directly with the provider before estimating a production workload. Pricing is provider- and configuration-specific.
Is StreamNeo a video API?
No. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos; it is not an API for building a live-video application, and it does not stream from a camera. If your goal is continuous playback of prerecorded videos rather than programmatic control of a live production pipeline, it may fit that narrower need. You upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream. StreamNeo loops the material from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
