You can back up Streamlabs Desktop overlays and scene collections by exporting them, then manually uploading the exported file to cloud storage you control. Streamlabs’ documented route is Settings > Scene Collections. This is not a documented automatic cloud backup of every Streamlabs setting, so treat the export as a backup of the named items—not a guarantee that every preference, credential, or local media file is included.
What the Streamlabs backup covers
Streamlabs recommends exporting your current overlays and scene collections before updating Streamlabs Desktop, and says regular exports are wise. Its guidance does not prescribe an export schedule or give a complete inventory of what the export contains. It does not establish that account details, every Desktop preference, credentials, local media files, or other application data are included.
Streamlabs’ update guidance describes exporting overlays and scene collections; it does not document an automatic cloud destination or automatic synchronization of every Desktop setting. The cloud copy described below is a manual file-storage step.
Export your overlays and scene collections

Open Streamlabs Desktop.

Locate the exported file on your computer. Keep the original there until you have confirmed that an uploaded copy is available.
Streamlabs’ published update guidance, “How to Update Streamlabs” (October 2, 2025), documents the recommendation and export route.
Upload the exported file to cloud storage

Sign in to a cloud-storage service you already use, or choose one that lets you access and download your files from another device.

Upload the exported Streamlabs file. This is an ordinary manual upload; the Streamlabs guidance does not name a cloud provider or describe an integrated cloud-storage feature.

Wait for the upload to finish, then confirm the file appears in your cloud account. If practical, download a copy on another device or browser session to check that you can retrieve it.

If you need another recovery option, keep a second copy in a separate location. Avoid storing the only copy on the same computer as Streamlabs Desktop.
When selecting storage, consider available space, account access and recovery, and whether file version history is available. No particular provider is established as the Streamlabs-recommended choice.
Restore an overlay from an exported file

Install or open Streamlabs Desktop on the computer where you want to use the overlay.

Retrieve the backed-up overlay file from cloud storage and save it locally.

In Streamlabs Desktop, go to Settings > Scene Collections > Import Overlay File, then select the existing
.overlayfile. -
Check the imported scenes and their assets in the app. The documented import instruction is for an overlay file; it does not establish a complete restore procedure for every Streamlabs setting.

What not to confuse with a backup

Onboarding import: Streamlabs Desktop setup offers an option to import settings from another streaming program or start fresh. That is a migration/setup choice, not evidence that an existing Streamlabs configuration is backed up to the cloud. See “Get started with Streamlabs Desktop” (July 22, 2026).

Dashboard account import: Streamlabs Dashboard Account Settings has an Import tab for account information from some other services. It is separate from exporting Streamlabs Desktop overlays and scene collections. See “How to Manage Account Settings in Streamlabs” (published December 12, 2024; last updated April 16, 2026).
Common backup problems
The exported file is missing from cloud storage
Check that the upload completed and that you are signed into the intended cloud account. If the file is still only on the computer, upload it again and verify that it appears in the cloud account before deleting or replacing the local copy.
The overlay does not appear as expected after import
Confirm you imported an existing .overlay file using Settings > Scene Collections > Import Overlay File, then inspect the imported scenes and assets. The documented import path does not promise recovery of all application preferences or local files.

You expected every Streamlabs setting to return
The cited Streamlabs guidance names overlays and scene collections, but does not itemize all exported fields or provide a field-by-field restore procedure. Do not assume account details, credentials, every Desktop preference, or local media files are part of this export.
