First check the font the browser actually rendered; then compare layout and capture conditions before trying to adjust font smoothing.
Why the same website font can look different on Windows
The browser may be using a fallback font
A CSS font stack lists preferred families in order. If the requested webfont has not loaded, is unavailable, or lacks the required weight or style, the browser can use another family farther down the stack. That fallback may have different letter shapes and widths, changing both the appearance of the text and where lines wrap.
Do not identify the font by eye alone. Chrome DevTools can show the rendered typeface for a selected text element. Check that against the intended family, and inspect the page’s font requests and CSS for failed files, misspelled family names, or missing weight and style variants. The same font can have different metrics
Font metrics influence such things as the space a line occupies and how text aligns within its line box. Operating systems and browsers can use different metric sources or choices, so a page can wrap differently or shift vertically even when the intended font file is present. Chrome for Developers’ guidance on improved font fallbacks describes using size-adjust and metric overrides to tune a fallback to better match a webfont.

Those adjustments address metrics and layout; they do not make glyph edges render pixel-for-pixel identically. Measure the actual font pair and the layout problem before adding overrides.
Windows text rendering and ClearType affect glyph edges
Microsoft describes ClearType as subpixel font rendering that draws text using a pixel’s red, green and blue components separately rather than treating the pixel as a single unit. That can change how smoothed letter edges look. It is one possible contributor to a screenshot difference, not proof that ClearType caused a particular one.

Browser text is also not necessarily rendered like text in a native Windows application. Microsoft’s Edge team described differences between Chromium’s text shaping, layout and rendering pipeline and native Windows text rendering in its 2021 discussion of Edge. That explanation applies to the software context discussed there; it should not be treated as a guarantee about every current browser version or every screenshot.
Zoom, display density and capture scale change apparent sharpness
window.devicePixelRatio is the ratio of physical pixels to CSS pixels. Page zoom affects that value, and high-density displays can use more physical pixels for each CSS pixel. As a result, otherwise similar text may look sharper, softer or a different apparent size when viewed or captured at different scales. MDN documents these relationships in its devicePixelRatio reference.

How to diagnose a font difference
- Check the rendered typeface and weight. In Chrome, open DevTools, inspect the text element, and check the rendered-font information. Compare the actual family and face with the CSS declaration. If they differ, verify that the webfont loaded and that the requested weight and style exist.
- Match the comparison conditions. Use the same browser family and version where possible. Match page zoom, viewport dimensions, Windows display scaling, and screenshot output scale. In the page console, check
window.devicePixelRatioon each system or capture environment. - Identify what changed. Different letter shapes often point to a different rendered face; changed line wrapping or vertical position can indicate font metrics or layout differences; changes mainly at glyph edges are more consistent with rasterization; a broad change in size or sharpness calls for checking zoom and pixel scale.
- Fix font selection before tuning appearance. Correct failed font loads, CSS family names, or missing face files first. If the intended face matches but layout still differs, inspect its metrics and line-height. Consider
size-adjustor metric overrides only when they are calibrated for the actual webfont and fallback. - Compare a direct browser view with the saved image. Check the capture’s pixel dimensions and scale. If the page looks right in the browser but the saved image does not, investigate the capture pipeline rather than assuming a CSS font setting is responsible.
Use font-smoothing CSS cautiously
Font-smoothing declarations are not a dependable universal fix for Windows screenshots. MDN documents the related WebKit and Firefox properties as working only on macOS, and describes font-smooth as non-standard. Such declarations cannot reliably force identical rendering across Windows browsers, displays and capture scales. For stable results, make sure the intended font loads and compare like-for-like rendering conditions before experimenting with platform-specific smoothing.
