To get clean HDMI for a live stream, turn off your camera’s HDMI information or display overlays, connect its HDMI output to a compatible capture device, and select that device as the video source in your streaming software. The exact setting and whether it works in your chosen camera mode depend on the camera model, so check its manual and test the entire setup before going live.
What clean HDMI means
Clean HDMI is a video feed without camera indicators such as recording status, battery level, or exposure information. Panasonic describes it as an HDMI transmission without those onscreen data indicators (Panasonic’s clean HDMI guidance). If the camera cannot disable those overlays, its interface may remain visible in the stream.
A capture device receives the camera’s HDMI video and makes it available to a computer for streaming, recording, or display. The typical signal path is camera HDMI output → capture device → computer → streaming software.
Check compatibility before setup
Confirm these points for your exact camera model and intended operating mode; features can vary even between modes on the same camera.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The camera sends live video over HDMI in the mode you plan to use.
- Its HDMI information or display overlays can be turned off in that mode. Manufacturer lists may have caveats; Panasonic, for example, notes some listed cameras may not provide clean output while recording.
- The capture device accepts the camera’s output resolution and frame rate. Elgato’s Cam Link guidance cites 720p or 1080p for that product specifically; this is not a universal limit for capture devices (Elgato Cam Link camera checklist).
- The cable matches the camera’s HDMI port and the capture device’s input. Check the camera manual: some cameras use a smaller HDMI connector than a standard full-size plug.
- The camera can stay active and powered for the duration you need. Check standby timers, battery-saving behavior, external-power options, and heat warnings. Sony cautions that high-quality continuous streaming can raise camera temperature enough to trigger automatic shutdown (Sony streaming guidance).
Set up clean HDMI step by step
- Check the camera manual. Look up live HDMI output, clean output, and HDMI display behavior for the exact model and mode. Do not assume a feature works while recording just because it works in another mode.
- Turn off HDMI overlays. Look for a setting with a name such as HDMI Info Display, HDMI Information Display, Live View display, or a similar label. On the Sony example, the path is
HDMI Settings → HDMI Info. Display → Off. That path is specific to the documented Sony workflow, not a universal menu route (Sony instructions for turning off camera information on HDMI). - Choose the camera’s video mode and output format. Sony recommends Movie Mode in its documented workflow. Nikon’s general guidance includes setting the desired movie frame size and frame rate, HDMI output resolution to Auto, output display size to 100%, and HDMI live-view onscreen display to Off. Follow your own model’s manual for the available controls (Nikon live-streaming guidance).
- Connect the hardware. Run an HDMI cable from the camera’s output to the capture device’s HDMI input, using the connector type that fits the camera. Connect the capture device to the computer.
- Select the capture device in your streaming software. Add or choose it as the video source. The precise label and menu path depend on the software; use its source settings to select the connected capture device.
- Test the complete setup. Preview the feed in the streaming application or on a monitor. Confirm the image is clean, the capture device accepts the selected format, and the camera stays awake and powered. Test for the length of a representative session before relying on it for a live broadcast.
Fix common clean HDMI problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camera menus, battery, or exposure data appear in the stream | HDMI information display is enabled, or clean output is unavailable in the selected mode. | Turn off the camera’s HDMI information/display overlay. Confirm the setting applies in the current mode and check the model manual. Cropping the image in software may hide an edge overlay, but it does not make the HDMI feed clean. |
| No picture in the streaming application | The signal path, source selection, cable, or input format may not match. | Check that the camera is sending live HDMI, the cable connects camera output to capture-device input, the capture device is connected to the computer, and the correct device is selected in the software. Verify the camera’s output format is accepted by the capture device. |
| The camera feed stops during a long stream | A standby timer, power-saving behavior, insufficient power, or camera heat may interrupt output. | Use the longest permitted standby setting or disable standby if the model allows it. Check external-power options, battery-saving settings, and the camera’s continuous-operation and temperature guidance. |
| The picture is unstable or unavailable at the selected format | The capture device may not support the camera’s chosen resolution or frame rate. | Check the device’s supported input formats and set the camera to a compatible output. Do not assume a resolution limit for one capture product applies to another. |
