YouTube’s own automatic live captions are the simplest option for eligible English-language streams at normal latency. If you need another language, a professional captioner, or more control, use an encoder such as OBS with a separate caption-delivery workflow. Streamlabs can also send a stream to YouTube, but its cited guides do not establish built-in closed-caption generation.
What “streaming software with captions” means
A streaming encoder sends audio and video to YouTube. Captions are a separate data path: YouTube says, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Selecting OBS or Streamlabs alone does not establish that live captions are configured. You need either YouTube’s automatic captions, caption data embedded in the encoder output, or a supported caption feed. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
Closed captions that viewers can toggle are different from words burned into the video as an overlay. The YouTube workflows below concern closed-caption delivery.

Choose a caption route
Use YouTube automatic captions for an eligible English stream
YouTube says its native live captions are rolling out to eligible English-language channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. Enable them in the settings for each live stream; there is no channel-wide setting that turns them on for every broadcast. YouTube identifies rollout eligibility, low or ultra-low latency, an unsupported language, poor sound, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages as reasons captions may not appear. Do not assume the live caption track will be on the replay. YouTube generates VOD captions separately after the broadcast, and they may differ from the live captions.

Send embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions through an encoder
- In YouTube Live settings, enable captions and select the embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 option.
- Configure the encoder and caption source to send the matching EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data as part of the stream.
- Check the live output for a selectable caption track before relying on it for an event.
YouTube’s guidance says these standards can carry up to four language tracks, while YouTube currently supports one caption track. Treat that as a limit of YouTube’s documented support, not as a promise that a multi-language workflow will appear as multiple selectable tracks. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements
Use YouTube’s caption ingestion URL for an event
- Turn on closed captions in the YouTube live event setup and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to your captioner or compatible caption software, and follow the vendor’s current setup instructions.
- Plan for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay, which YouTube specifies for this workflow. YouTube also specifies one caption feed per stream entry point.
- Test the end-to-end feed before the event, including the captioner’s connection and the viewer-facing caption toggle.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse/AccuCap version 6.0.0.5 or later, Case CATalyst BCS version 14.52 or later, CaptionMaker version 5.22 or later, and StreamText.Net, described as a cloud caption delivery system compatible with speech-to-text platforms. These are versions and tools named in YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026; verify current availability and vendor instructions before setup. How to decide what fits
- Language: YouTube automatic live captions are English-only. For another language, confirm the supported language and delivery method with the caption provider and YouTube workflow you plan to use.
- Latency: Automatic captions depend on normal latency; YouTube’s event ingestion workflow calls for a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay.
- Replay: Automatic live captions do not remain after the broadcast. YouTube generates VOD captions separately.
- Caption control: If you need human captioning or an event-oriented delivery path, use the ingestion URL and a compatible service or software rather than assuming the encoder supplies captions.
- Cost and accuracy: The cited official pages do not provide a complete current price or measured accuracy comparison. Check the provider’s current terms and test it with your actual audio, speakers, and language.
Troubleshoot captions that are missing or wrong
- No automatic captions appear: Check that the stream is eligible, in English, and using normal latency; confirm captions are enabled for this particular stream. Improve microphone clarity and reduce overlapping speech or simultaneous languages.
- OBS or Streamlabs is streaming but captions are absent: The encoder connection does not prove caption data is being sent. Confirm whether your workflow uses embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 data or the signed ingestion URL and verify that source independently.
- An event caption feed does not connect: Recheck the signed URL, caption software compatibility and vendor setup. Confirm you have planned the specified broadcast delay and are not trying to use more than one caption feed per stream entry point.
- Live captions are missing from the replay: This is expected for YouTube automatic live captions; the VOD caption track is generated separately. Check the replay after YouTube has processed it.
- Captions are inaccurate or hard to follow: YouTube identifies poor sound, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages as possible problems for automatic captions. Improve the audio and speaking conditions, or evaluate a professional caption workflow if the automatic route is not adequate.
