To stream your computer screen on YouTube, use encoder software that can capture your display and send it to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, copy the stream URL and key into the encoder, start its stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.
Before you set up: check your channel eligibility
YouTube says your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. The minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Check the current status and instructions in YouTube Studio, since eligibility and interface details can change. YouTube Live streaming requirements
Choose software and equipment for your screen stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports sharing a computer screen. An encoder can be software on your computer or a standalone hardware device. YouTube lists verified encoder options, but says those products are not made by YouTube; the list is not a comparative ranking. Choose based on your operating system, hardware, audio-routing needs, production features, and cost. YouTube Live encoders
For a lesson or basic screen demonstration
Choose software that can capture the display and route the system or application audio you intend viewers to hear. A separate microphone is optional if you are not narrating.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a narrated tutorial or face-camera overlay
Add a microphone if you want clearer spoken narration, and a webcam if you want your face on screen. Connect and configure these sources in the encoder; neither is required to share the screen. More involved productions can use additional audio and video hardware.
For a professional event
A dedicated hardware encoder may suit a workflow built around broadcast equipment. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; that does not establish that hardware is necessary for an ordinary screen share. YouTube’s live streaming overview

Configure and start the YouTube screen stream
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then create or manage the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube Live streaming setup
- Set up your encoder. Select a YouTube preset if your software offers one. Otherwise, copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching encoder fields. Treat the stream key like a password: keep it private and do not display it in the captured screen.
- Choose the capture and audio sources. Select the display or window to share, and confirm the intended system/application audio and microphone sources. Check that notifications or private material will not appear in the capture.
- Check connection and stream settings. Match the encoder’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate to your connection and computer. Confirm that your available upload bandwidth can support the total stream bitrate with headroom before going live.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming video to appear in Live Control Room. Check the picture, audio and stream-health indicators before proceeding.
- Go live. When the preview and health indicators look right, click Go live in Live Control Room.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder’s outgoing stream.
Set bitrate and test your network
The encoder’s total bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth actually available to the stream. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, if your connection has 10 Mbps of reliable upload available during the broadcast, plan for the stream’s total bitrate to stay around or below 8 Mbps; this is an illustration of the headroom recommendation, not a universal quality preset. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates
- Check upload speed, not just download speed, and account for other people or devices sharing the connection.
- Select a resolution, frame rate and bitrate that the connection and encoder can sustain reliably. No single bitrate fits every resolution, frame rate, content type or network.
- Test with representative screen movement and audio before the broadcast. A static slide deck and a fast-moving demonstration can place different demands on the encoder and connection.
- During the stream, monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and messages. If the connection is unstable, reduce the stream load or resolve competing network use rather than assuming the download speed is sufficient. YouTube guidance on stream health and bandwidth
Protect the stream from common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | The encoder has not connected, or its destination details are incorrect. | Confirm the encoder is running and that its server/stream URL and key match the current stream in Live Control Room. |
| Preview appears, but YouTube is not live | The encoder connection is only the incoming feed; the broadcast has not been started in Live Control Room. | Inspect the preview and health indicators, then click Go live. |
| Unstable video or stream-health warnings | The stream bitrate may exceed available upload bandwidth, or the connection may be shared or inconsistent. | Check upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and reduce encoder load or competing network traffic. |
| Viewers cannot hear narration or application audio | The intended input may not be selected or routed in the encoder. | Check microphone and system/application audio sources, then test them in the preview before starting. |
| A stream key may have been exposed | The key was shown in a screen capture, shared, or entered somewhere unintended. | Keep keys private; review YouTube Studio’s current stream controls and replace or reset the key if needed. |
Keep a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos
Screen sharing is for showing your computer’s display. If instead you want a prerecorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that YouTube-only use case: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, with no computer, OBS or home connection needing to stay on. Each slot carries the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start a free StreamNeo day
