Why is Facebook still showing the old image after I changed it?
Changing an image on your site does not automatically mean Facebook has fetched the revised preview. Facebook may still be using previously fetched page or image data; the page may still emit the old og:image; or Facebook may be unable to fetch the new image. An existing post is a separate case from the preview shown for a newly scraped URL.
The key diagnostic is what Facebook fetched for the exact shared page URL. The Sharing Debugger lets you inspect that information and request another scrape. How do I refresh a Facebook link preview?
- Publish the corrected metadata first. Make sure the live page’s
og:imagepoints to the intended image. Check the initial HTML response, not only the page after it has been rendered in your browser. - Check that the page and image can be fetched. Confirm the shared page and image are publicly reachable, the image URL returns the intended file, and there are no relevant errors, redirects, or access restrictions.
- Open Meta’s Sharing Debugger. Enter the exact URL that people share, rather than a nearby page or a URL with different path or redirect behavior.
- Inspect the fetched result. Review the reported Open Graph values, especially
og:image, and any warnings. Use the available control to scrape the page again. - Check the preview and the live post separately. Confirm that the debugger shows the intended image. If the problem is in an existing post, inspect that post too; a refreshed debugger preview does not establish that the old attachment has changed.
What if the debugger still shows the old image?
The debugger reports the old og:image URL
Facebook is receiving an old or unexpected metadata value. Confirm that the change is deployed on the exact URL entered in the debugger. Check whether a redirect leads to a different page, and look for duplicate or conditional Open Graph tags. Inspect the initial HTML response Facebook can fetch; a browser’s rendered DOM may include tags added later by JavaScript that are absent from that response.

The debugger reports the new URL but displays the old pixels
If you overwrote an image while keeping its URL unchanged, the URL may still identify a cached copy. Publish the replacement under a distinct, versioned filename, update og:image to that URL, and request another scrape. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee about how long a cache lasts.
The debugger cannot fetch the image
Open the image URL and verify that it is publicly reachable and returns the intended image. Check the debugger’s warnings and investigate errors, redirects, or restrictions that could prevent the crawler from retrieving it.

Your browser shows the new metadata but Facebook does not
Compare the initial HTML response with the browser-rendered page. If the metadata is injected only after client-side JavaScript runs, it may not be present in the HTML Facebook fetches. Make the intended Open Graph tags available in the initial response, deploy the change, then scrape the page again.
The debugger is correct but an existing post is not
Inspect the live post as its own problem. A correct fresh preview is not proof that an already-published attachment updated, and there is no universal refresh control or guaranteed update timing established here for every existing post.

How do I clear Facebook’s link preview cache?
For this repair, use the Sharing Debugger to request a new scrape of the exact shared page URL after correcting its metadata. If the image itself was replaced at the same URL and old pixels persist, give the new image a distinct URL, point og:image to it, and scrape again. There is no fixed cache lifetime or guaranteed refresh delay established here, so avoid relying on a specific wait time.
If the page or image is not publicly fetchable, requesting another scrape alone will not fix that access problem. Resolve the underlying metadata or fetch issue first, then retry.
