First check whether the audio is out of sync by roughly the same amount at the beginning and end of your recording, or whether the gap grows over time. A steady offset may be corrected with OBS’s audio Sync Offset; growing drift calls for checking the capture devices, audio settings, and computer workload. For an existing Clipchamp project, you can detach and manually realign its audio track.
Diagnose the kind of sync problem
- Make a short test recording. Include a visible event with a matching sound, such as a clap or click.
- Check the beginning and a later point. Compare where the sound falls relative to the visible event in both places.
- Classify the result. If the separation is about the same, treat it as a fixed offset. If it grows, treat it as drift and investigate the recording path.
- Check the saved file. A delay heard while monitoring an input does not, by itself, show that the recording has the same delay.
This comparison is a practical diagnostic, not a formal test with a universal tolerance or required duration.
Fix a steady offset in OBS
OBS provides a per-source Sync Offset setting in Advanced Audio Properties. Focusrite’s OBS setup guide explains that the value is in milliseconds and depends on the computer’s audio and video processing; there is no universally correct number to enter.
- In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties for the affected audio source.
- Adjust that source’s Sync Offset in milliseconds. Do not assume a value that works for another computer or source will work for yours.
- Record a short sample and check the saved recording against a visible event.
- Repeat with a measured adjustment if necessary. Keep the change only if it improves the saved file.
Changing a source’s offset is appropriate for a consistent timing difference. It does not establish or fix the cause of a gap that keeps increasing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Investigate audio that drifts over time
A one-time offset cannot, by itself, account for an accumulating timing difference. Check the devices and workload involved in your recording before trying a static adjustment.
Check the audio capture chain
- Identify which device supplies each sound—for example, a microphone and a separate USB capture device.
- Inspect the relevant audio settings, including whether devices use mismatched audio refresh rates.
- Consider whether separate physical devices may have independent clocks. OBS forum users have discussed these as possible causes, but they are troubleshooting leads, not a diagnosis that applies to every setup.
Do not replace a microphone or capture card on the assumption that it will fix sync. The available guidance does not establish hardware replacement as a general cure. An audio interface may be worth considering only when multiple physical audio sources and their independent clocks are suspected; it is not a remedy for a fixed offset already present in a file or a guaranteed fix for drift.

Check whether the workload is too demanding
OBS says CPU demands vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements page, dated August 25, 2021, cautions that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee a computer can handle a particular workload. Treat workload changes as checks, not assured sync repairs.
- Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point for basic settings.
- For a recording-quality starting point, OBS’s help portal also suggests Simple output mode with recording presets.
- Change one setting at a time, make a saved test recording, and compare sync near the start and later in the file.
Realign audio in an existing Clipchamp project
Microsoft documents detaching recorded audio in Clipchamp so it can be edited separately on the timeline. This is a manual editing option, not automatic synchronization repair.

- In the Clipchamp project, detach the recorded audio using the audio controls.
- On the timeline, move the separate audio asset to align it with the video.
- If needed, split or trim the detached audio to make the alignment fit the section you are correcting.
- Export the project and check the resulting file, including later sections if the original problem was drift.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
- The live preview seems delayed, but the file may be fine: Check the saved recording independently before changing sync settings.
- A fixed adjustment improves the start but not the end: The problem may be drift rather than a steady offset. Inspect the devices, their audio settings, and the workload instead of repeatedly changing one static value.
- A Sync Offset value copied from someone else does not help: The right adjustment depends on the specific computer and capture setup. Test with short saved samples.
- The computer meets OBS’s minimum requirements, but the recording still struggles: Minimum compatibility does not guarantee that a chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene will run successfully together. Try the OBS wizard or recording presets, changing one setting at a time.
- Detached audio is aligned in the editor but not in the exported video: Check the exported file; the timeline view alone does not verify the result.
Keep a YouTube stream running without a recording computer
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than to repair sync in a screen recording, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed or send streams to other platforms.
Or let it run in the cloud
