There is no proven, universal “lightest” screen recorder for a low-end PC. The best starting point depends on what you need to capture and whether your computer has a hardware video encoder it can use. For a basic game or app clip, try Windows Xbox Game Bar; for more control, use OBS Studio and tune its settings; for a Windows recorder with documented hardware-encoding options, consider Bandicam. None is established by comparative testing here as the lowest-load option.

How to choose a recorder for a modest PC

Screen recording has to capture images and encode them into a video file. How demanding that is depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and, in OBS, scene complexity. A computer that meets a recorder’s baseline requirements is not necessarily able to record smoothly at your chosen settings. OBS Project’s system-requirements guidance makes that distinction explicit.

  • For a quick clip of a game or app: start with Xbox Game Bar, which is built into Windows and supports game or app clips.
  • For adjustable recording controls: try OBS Studio, then use its Auto-Configuration Wizard and a short test recording to find settings your PC can handle.
  • For documented hardware-encoding choices on Windows: consider Bandicam if your system supports one of its listed encoders.
  • For any option: begin with the resolution and frame rate you actually need. If the recording stutters or the computer becomes unresponsive, reduce them and test again.

There is no controlled comparison here of CPU or GPU load, dropped frames, or video quality across these products on representative low-end PCs. Treat the choices below as practical starting points based on documented features, not a performance ranking.

Screen recorders to consider

Xbox Game Bar: convenient for a basic game or app clip

Xbox Game Bar is a sensible first try when you want a short clip and the built-in capture fits your task. Microsoft documents recording a game or app and keyboard controls for recording and toggling the microphone. Its documentation does not establish whole-desktop capture coverage or show that it uses fewer resources than other recorders, so do not assume it suits every capture need or is the lightest option.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

See Microsoft’s instructions for recording a game clip with Xbox Game Bar for the supported workflow and controls.

OBS Studio: flexible, but tune it to the computer

OBS Studio is useful when you need to configure a recording rather than make a one-click clip. Its resource demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; OBS warns that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee successful recording. Open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration, then make a brief test at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use.

If the test is choppy, simplify the setup and lower resolution or frame rate before adding more sources or effects. OBS’s published requirements and configuration guidance are at OBS system requirements.

Bandicam: Windows option with documented hardware encoding

Bandicam documents hardware-accelerated recording with NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync Video, and AMD VCE/AMF. These are options only when the relevant hardware and software configuration support them. The vendor recommends lowering the recorded or game resolution and using a hardware-accelerated codec, when supported, to reduce lag. That guidance does not demonstrate that Bandicam is lighter than OBS or Xbox Game Bar on a given PC.

Consult Bandicam’s lag-reduction guidance and check the current version requirements and free-tier restrictions before installing or relying on it.

Set up a recording without overloading the PC

  1. Choose the simplest capture that meets your need. Use a built-in game or app clip for a basic capture; move to a configurable recorder when you need its controls or workflow.
  2. Check available encoders. If your recorder offers a hardware encoder supported by your processor or graphics hardware, try it. Bandicam lists NVENC, Quick Sync, and VCE/AMF; OBS notes that encoder choice affects CPU requirements. Availability depends on your hardware and software version.
  3. Start conservatively. Use a lower resolution or frame rate if the PC struggles, and record a short sample. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the result improves.
  4. Check the output before recording a long session. Play the test file and check that it captures the intended content and sound, and that playback is not visibly choppy.
  5. Check storage separately. Ensure there is enough free space and that the destination can sustain writes. Storage capacity or a faster drive does not, by itself, solve CPU or GPU encoding overload.

Fix capture and performance problems

The recording stutters or the game slows down

  • Lower the recorded resolution or frame rate, then make another short test. Resolution and FPS affect encoding demands, and Bandicam specifically recommends reducing resolution to address lag.
  • Try a supported hardware-accelerated encoder if one is available. Encoder support depends on the computer; choosing hardware encoding is not a guarantee of smooth capture.
  • In OBS, reduce scene complexity and unnecessary sources while diagnosing the issue. OBS identifies scene complexity as one factor in CPU demands.

OBS has trouble capturing on a hybrid-graphics laptop

Some laptops have both integrated and discrete GPUs, and OBS runs on one GPU at a time. If the application being captured and OBS run on different GPUs, capture or performance problems can occur. The preferred GPU assignment depends on capture mode: OBS’s Windows Graphics-settings guide distinguishes between Game/Window Capture and Display Capture. Follow the mode-specific instructions in OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guide rather than assuming the discrete GPU is always the right choice.

The output file is missing, too large, or fails to save

  • Check that the recording destination exists and has enough free space.
  • If the file grows too quickly, reduce resolution or frame rate and check the available storage before a longer capture.
  • If recording cannot write to the selected location, try another location with sufficient free space. A storage change may address a write or capacity problem, but it will not fix an overloaded encoder.

What “low-end” can and cannot tell you

“Low-end PC” does not identify a standard hardware configuration. A machine’s ability to record depends on its processor, graphics hardware, supported encoders, capture target, chosen settings, and scene. Without a controlled test on the specific computer, no recommendation can promise smooth 1080p60 or gaming capture. A short test using your actual application and settings is the most useful check.

Bandicam’s published advice supports lowering resolution and using hardware encoding when available; OBS identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as relevant variables. Neither source provides a controlled comparison proving one recorder is the lightest across low-end PCs.
