Open Graph tags describe a page, but they do not guarantee that every social network will display the same card.
What to check in the page’s Open Graph metadata
Open Graph metadata belongs in the page’s <head>. The protocol identifies four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Add og:description for a concise summary, and provide descriptive og:image:alt text for the image.
<meta property="og:title" content="Article title">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/article-share.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of the article.">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the image">
Replace the example values with those for the page you intend to share. In particular, make sure og:url points to the correct page and og:image points to the intended image. The protocol also defines optional image properties for a secure URL, MIME type, width and height. When a property has multiple values, the first tag in document order is preferred if values conflict. See the Open Graph Protocol.
How to preview the card before sharing
- Inspect the rendered page source. Find the document’s
<head>and check that the title, type, page URL and image URL are present and accurate. Confirm the optional description and image alt text are appropriate. If the page is rendered dynamically, verify the HTML response a crawler will receive, not only what appears after scripts run in your browser. - Open the image URL directly. Check that it resolves to the intended file without requiring a login, session cookie or access to a protected directory. Confirm the image is not broken or unexpectedly replaced.
- Check the target platform’s image constraints. Requirements vary by platform; do not treat one network’s limits as universal Open Graph rules. LinkedIn’s sharing-module guidance is detailed below.
- Run the target platform’s current preview or inspection tool. Use the platform’s own parser when available and inspect the values it reports, especially the selected image. The Open Graph Protocol identifies Facebook Object Debugger as Facebook’s official parser and debugger.
- Correct the page or image, then inspect again. Verify the newly fetched values in the preview tool before sharing. Do not assume a particular cache-refresh action or timing unless the platform’s current official instructions confirm it.
LinkedIn image requirements
LinkedIn Help specifies the following for its sharing module. These are LinkedIn-specific requirements, not a universal image specification for every platform. The help page is marked “Last updated: 2 years ago,” so check its current guidance when preparing a page to publish.

| LinkedIn guidance | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Maximum image file size | 5 MB |
| Minimum dimensions | 1200 × 627 pixels |
| Recommended aspect ratio | 1.91:1 |
| Images narrower than 401 pixels | Display as thumbnails |
LinkedIn also says an otherwise compliant image might not appear if a site blocks LinkedIn from fetching it or the image is in a protected directory or website. See LinkedIn’s sharing-module image guidance.
Why a preview may show the wrong image or no image
- The tags are missing or incorrect. Recheck the page’s head for the four required properties and confirm the image URL belongs to the page being shared.
- The image is not accessible to the crawler. A URL that works only while you are signed in may not work for a social platform. Check for blocked requests, authentication requirements or a protected location.
- The image does not meet the target platform’s constraints. Check that platform’s current requirements for dimensions, file size and ratio. For LinkedIn, use the limits in the table above.
- Multiple values conflict. If duplicate Open Graph tags specify different values, the first tag in document order is preferred under the protocol. Remove unintended duplicates or put the desired value first.
- The platform has not fetched the corrected version you expect. Run its inspection tool again and follow current official directions for rechecking. Cache-refresh behavior and instructions should not be assumed to be identical across platforms.
Limits of cross-platform previews
A debugger preview is useful evidence of what a particular parser reads; it is not a promise that every platform will render the same card. Open Graph defines the metadata vocabulary, while individual platforms control their own crawler behavior, image limits and presentation. Facebook’s debugger is identified by the protocol as an official tool, but current interface instructions should be checked directly. Current Facebook, LinkedIn Post Inspector and X preview or refresh workflows are not established here; consult each platform’s current official documentation before relying on a specific button, workflow or cache rule.
